This book was released on 2022-05-18 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume focuses on the cultural background of the pivotal transformations of scientific knowledge in the early modern period. It investigates the rich edition history of Johannes de Sacrobosco’s Tractatus de sphaera, by far the most widely disseminated textbook on geocentric cosmology, from the unique standpoint of the many printers, publishers, and booksellers who steered this text from manuscript to print culture, and in doing so transformed it into an established platform of scientific learning. The corpus, constituted of 359 different editions featuring Sacrobosco’s treatise on cosmology and astronomy printed between 1472 and 1650, represents the scientific European shared knowledge concerned with the cosmological worldview of the early modern period until far after the publication of Copernicus’ De revolutionibus orbium coelestium in 1543. The contributions to this volume show how the academic book trade influenced the process of homogenization of scientific knowledge. They also describe the material infrastructure through which such knowledge was disseminated, and thus define the premises for the foundation of modern scientific communities.

This book was released on 1997-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) and the Commentary celebrates the 500th anniversary of Philip Melanchthon's birth by highlighting one of his most important contributions to the intellectual world of Renaissance and Reformation: commentary on ancient texts. This book brings together essays not only by recognized connoisseurs of Melanchthon's thought but also by experts on other figures and movements within the Renaissance and Reformation, in order to provide a more accurate measure of the man and his distinction from and influence on other thinkers of his day. It also investigates both Melanchthon's wrestling with biblical texts and his equally significant exposition of other prominent ancient authors.
Download or read book Translating Resurrection written by Gergely M. Juhász and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translating Resurrection examines the debate between William Tyndale and George Joye at the beginning of the English Reformation. Occasioned by Joye’s coining ‘life after this’ for Tyndale’s ‘resurrection’ in Joye’s 1534 edition of Tyndale’s New Testament, this fascinating but little-known debate provides unique insights into the reformers’ beliefs concerning post-mortem existence, such as the question of immortality of the soul, soul-sleep, prayers to saints and the doctrine of Purgatory. By providing a thoroughgoing historical and theological context, the book presents an original look at this important episode from the life of the exiled protestant English community. The result will realign scholarship on Tyndale as well as centuries of neglect of Joye’s contributions to early modern bible translation.
