Book The Impact of Pastoral Legislation on Equitable and Sustainable Natural Resource Management in Guinea

Download or read book The Impact of Pastoral Legislation on Equitable and Sustainable Natural Resource Management in Guinea written by Oussouby Touré and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the findings of a study of the impact of Guinean pastoral legislation carried out on behalf of IIED as part of its sub-regional "Making Decentralisation Work" programme. Experience in Guinea shows that grassroots ownership of the pastoral legislation is essential if it is to be applied effectively. In order to meet this challenge herders' organisations need to be more aware of and engage with the issues involved in natural resource management and ongoing processes of decentralisation. The evaluation of the experience in Guinea indicates that formulating legislation or translating it into national languages is not enough to ensure its dissemination and appropriation by local communities.

Book excerpt: Dr. Marshall Murphree is a prominent scholar in the elds of common property theory, rural development, and natural resource management. The focus is on marginalised people living in poor and remote regions of Zimbabwe, but also includes important discussions about the policy implications of regional tenure regimes, and the place of local resource management in global conservation politics. Book excerpt: The present study reports on the Government of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau's efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy for enhancing land rights security and achieving social and economic development objectives. This report is divided into two main parts. The first part summarizes the current state of development of the government s land policy, as well as the legal and traditional framework existing for land tenure security. It further presents the institutional environment and technical conditions regarding the implementation of the land law and general land regulation draft. The second part presents and analyzes the government action plan. Specific recommendations are made concerning the basic structure and main elements of a national land administration and land management program, which could comprise three components: (i) the development of a nationwide cadastral system as the core infrastructure and land administration instrument, (ii) the harmonization and integration of traditional and official right systems and institutions, and (iii) subsidiary support to land management capacities, which are crucial for the implementation of the two previous components. Several cross-cutting issues like gender, conflict management, environmental aspects and sustainable resource management are interlaced with the technical elements of land tenure development and considered throughout the report.

It looks at how solutions can be found and implemented to respond to the demands and needs of the majority of squatters and informal settlements, and analyzes how urban stakeholders, with different social, legal and economic constraints, find innovative and flexible solutions. The book is intended to fill a gap in the literature on comparative research on tenure policies and should be useful to researchers and professionals involved in defining and instigating tenure upgrading policies and programmes.

Book Sharing Power

Download or read book Sharing Power written by Grazia Borrini-Feyerabend and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collaborative orco-management of natural resources - whether between states and local communities or amongst and within communities themselves - is a process of collective understanding and actions to bring about negotiated agreements on roles, rights and responsibilities for decentralized governance of natural resources. At heart, co-management is about sharing power, one of the most difficult but rewarding experiences in personal and social life. The book is designed for professionals and people involved in practical co-management processes, and distils a wealth of experience and innovative approacheslearned by doing. It begins by offering a variety of vistas, from historical analyses to a clear grasp of key concepts. Illustrated in detail is the understanding accumulated in recent decades on starting points for co-management, conditions and methods for successful negotiations, ideas to manage conflicts and types of agreements and co-management institutions emerging from the negotiation tables. Simple tools, such as checklists distilled from different situations and contexts, are offered throughout. Examples and insights from experience highlight the importance of participatory democracy - the enabling contexts where ‘sharing power is ultimately possible and successful. Published with IIED and IUCN.

Book Land Tenure Reform in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Land Tenure Reform in Sub Saharan Africa written by Steven Lawry and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impacts of land tenure reform interventions implemented in Benin, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. Since 2000, many African countries have introduced programs aimed at providing smallholder farmers with low-cost certificates for land held under customary tenure. Yet there are many contending views and debates on the impact of these land policies and this book reveals how tenure security, agricultural productivity, and social inclusion were affected by the interventions. It analyses the results of carefully selected, authoritative studies on interventions in Benin, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe and applies a realist synthesis methodology to explore the socio-political and economic contexts. Drawing on these results, the book argues that inadequate attention paid to the core characteristics of rural social systems obscures the benefits of customary tenure while overlooking the scope for reforms to reduce the gaps in social status among members of customary communities. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of land management and use, land and property law, tenure security, agrarian studies, political economy, and sustainable development. It will also appeal to development professionals and policymakers involved in land governance and land policy in Africa.
