Book excerpt: This project is a qualitative study of the self-assessment of the causes, prevention, and treatment of HIV/AIDS in one rural Mexican community, San Luis Acatlán, Guerrero, Mexico. Six distinct ethnic groups reside within or around the San Luis Acatlán area--Mixteco, Mexicano, Amuzgo, Tlapaneco, Afto Mexicano, and Mestizo--and each group has a unique history and retains its different cultural practices. In the 19 years of HIV/AIDS research in Mexico, a large segment of that research has focused on urban settings and the Mestizo population, the most common ethnic group in Mexico. The intention of this study was to shift focus to the more inaccessible populations: indigenous and rural inhabitants. For the completion of the self-assessments, open-ended interviews were conducted from a cross-section of the community. The interview questions were open-ended, but specifically asked individuals about personal and cultural beliefs, cultural barriers in accessing medical services, knowledge about HIV/AIDS, community support, and response to the disease. The end product of this project is the development of a better understanding of the homogeneity in one community and the exploration of how prevention and education can be approached in a multicultural Mexican community.
