Book Local Government in Britain Since Reorganisation

Download or read book Local Government in Britain Since Reorganisation written by Alan Alexander and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book was the first comprehensive, critical assessment of the outcome of the controversial reorganisation of British local government outside London which took place between 1973 and 1975. The book deals with the new systems in England, Wales and Scotland, drawing upon the results of almost 100 in-depth interviews with leading members and officers from Shetland to Cornwall, from major cities to rural districts. Liaison between the tiers, the effects of corporate management, the spread of the office of chief executive, the increasing levels of partisanship and the changing face of central-local relations are examined on the basis of close observation and practical experience rather than theoretical preconceptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1984, is an attempt to make students aware of the variety in the urban condition and to introduce them to some of the relationships operating between space and society. From the broad aim of seeking to show the relationship between urbanism and society flows a number of sub-themes, including the importance of cross-cultural comparisons and contrasts, re-distributional consequences and the role of government. This book will be of interest to first- and second-year students of urban studies and human geography.

Book Explaining local government

Download or read book Explaining local government written by J. A. Chandler and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explaining local government, available at last in paperback, uniquely presents a history of local government in Britain from 1800 until the present day. The study explains how the institution evolved from a structure that appeared to be relatively free from central government interference to, as John Prescott observes, 'one of the most centralised systems of government in the Western world'. The book is accessible to A level and undergraduate students as an introduction to the development of local government in Britain but also balances values and political practice to provide a unique explanation, using primary research, of the evolution of the system.

Book Conservation and the City

Download or read book Conservation and the City written by Peter Larkham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a widely held belief that cities must change, or they will wither and die. One of the key problems of urbanization is how to cope with these changes while retaining the structures constructed and maintained by previous generations. Conservation and the City is a study of conservation and change throughout the built environment - city centres, suburbs and even tiny villages - and how the activites of conservation interact with the planning system. Using detailed case studies from Britain and the Westernized world, the author examines some of the key social, economic and psychological ideas which support conservation, as well as studying the urban landscape and the agents of change. Conservation and the City seeks to understand urban conservation, and in doing so presents possible solutions for managing change in the built environment of the future.

Book Control and Power in Central local Government Relations

Download or read book Control and Power in Central local Government Relations written by R.A.W. Rhodes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999. Originally published in 1981, Control and Power in Central-Local Government Relations set out to provide a re-interpretation of central-local relations in Britain. The book reviewed the (then) existing literature; redefined the subject of intergovernmental relations (IGR); and developed a theory linking IGR to broader issues in the study of British Government. It rapidly became a classic in the study of local government. The link to broader issues what achieved through the power-dependence model and the focus on policy communities. The book underpinned the vast growth in the study of policy networks in British government. This revised edition includes four new chapters, two of which have been specially written. The new Preface traces the fortunes of the power-dependence model, commenting on and updating the individual chapters. A new part II continues the story. It contains a 1986 essay reviewing criticism of the original model (chapter 6); a 1992 article discussing unresolved issues in the study of policy networks (chapter 7); and a new chapter assessing where we are now in the study of networks. It argues, provocatively, for an ethnographic focus on traditions and narratives; on how individuals construct networks. The book remains essential reading for all students and academics concerned with the study of IGR and policy networks.

Book Urban Planning Under Thatcherism

Download or read book Urban Planning Under Thatcherism written by Andy Thornley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, Urban Planning Under Thatcherism links theory and practice to assess the changes to the planning system since 1979. It analyses the major trends by investigating the individual modifications in the legislation and the new initiatives which have introduced procedures to by-pass the normal system. Such changes are fundamental not only to the built environment but to the quality of urban life and ultimately to the nature of society. The book argues that this orientation is the result of a policy shift from local democracy to centralisation and from the criteria of the public interest to those of the market.
