Book Local Benefits From Timber Industry Expansion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Local Benefits From Timber Industry Expansion Classic Reprint written by David P. Worley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-08 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Local Benefits From Timber Industry Expansion All this is common knowledge of course. But what has not been common knowledge is how much each step or process in wood-products manufacture increases the profit. A recent analysis of the operating records of 50 successful forest product manufacturers in eastern Kentucky gives the first real insight into cost-and-return comparisons among the various production stages and processes in the industry. Top management personnel of firms engaged in the pre liminary manufacture and marketing of forest products were interviewed in 1958 regarding their 1957 operations so as to gain insight into their purchase policies, business methods, and sales policies. Information generalized from these inter views plus company records form the basis for this paper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growing Pine Timber for Profit in the South: Some Examples, Estimates, and Opinions by Lumbermen and Others The timber-growing idea has been grasped throughout much of the South. Public thought has come to appreciate how important forestry and permanent forest industries are to the economic prog ress of the region. Apparently farm forestry and industrial forestry are taking actual hold of the land more rapidly in the South than in any other section of the United States. Book Timber Growing and Logging Practice in the Central Hardwood Region Classic Reprint

Download or read book Timber Growing and Logging Practice in the Central Hardwood Region Classic Reprint written by C. R. Tillotson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber Growing and Logging Practice in the Central Hardwood Region The second group of proposed measures constitutes 'what may be called the desirable forestry practice in the region concerned as far as our knowledge and experience to date enable us to determine it. These measures are designed to grow reasonably complete crops of the more valuable timber trees, making full use of the real produc tive capacity of the land. The recommendations are addressed pri marily to the landowner who wishes to use his property up to its full earning power for timber culture. It is impossible to frame any general set of measures of this character that are adapted to the individual needs of particular holdings or industrial establish ments. This is true particularly of forest regions like the North eastern States, which include a great variety of local situations both in the types of growth and in economic circumstances. Hence, in presenting this group of suggested measures, the Forest Service has attempted only to draw the broad outlines of the more general and fundamental things, with illustrative methods of forest practice. The details of intensive forestry, like the details of intensive agri culture or engineering, call for expert survey in working out the plans and methods best adapted to a particular tract of land or a particular business. One of the most important features of expert planning for the management of a particular forest property or for a supply of raw material for a particular forest industry is to devise, not simply woods operations that will produce full crops of timber, but also a scheme of logging that will afford a continuous yield of products desired, in order that sustained earnings may be realized or a sustained supply of raw material made available. In some cases it is not practicable to draw a hard and fast line between the first steps that will maintain some degree of productive ness on forest land and the more intensive measures that will bring the quantity and quality of wood produced up more nearly to an ideal management. Graduations between the two general groups of measures are inevitable. The Forest Service has not attempted, therefore, to deal with the two general types of forest practice as wholly separate and distinct but has rather endeavored to present a common-sense and practical résumé of the various steps in timber growing in the form that will be most helpful to the, man in the woods. The bulletins have been written for the landowner and the lumberman rather than for the technical forester. Their purpose is to put the main ideas into the most useful form, considering the special needs and problems of each region, for aiding the man to whom timber growing is a concrete business and logging problem. Book Value Growth of Pine Pulpwood on the George Walton Experimental Forest Classic Reprint

Download or read book Value Growth of Pine Pulpwood on the George Walton Experimental Forest Classic Reprint written by Daniel E. Chappelle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Value Growth of Pine Pulpwood on the George Walton Experimental Forest In order to maximize profit it is necessary that the grower of pine pulpwood not only retain the proper amount of growing stock but also select the proper trees to remove when thinning. Those trees not expected to earn their way over the next growth period should be harvested. To a considerable extent, therefore, profit maximization depends on the actions of the timber marker. The financial maturity concept provides a method for selecting trees to retain as growing stock so as to maximize profits from timber growing. To apply this concept to timber marking decisions, it is necessary to determine and compare two factors, the alternative rate of return of the owner and the value growth rate of the timber. The alternative rate of return is the mini mum rate, expressed in compound interest form, that the owner will accept on investments of equal risk._2/ This rate will vary considerably, depending on the individual owner's economic situation. Value growth is the increase in value obtained by retaining a tree over an additional growth period. It is generally expressed as a compound interest rate based on the value of a combination of quantity and quality growth of growing stock for a given period of time. Financial maturity is reached when the tree's value growth rate expected over the future period is equal to the owner's alternative rate of return. Marking guides based on financial matu rity are in demand because of the growing realization among forest owners that adequate profit must be forthcoming to justify increases in growing stock. Book The Ground on Which I Stand

Download or read book The Ground on Which I Stand written by Marti Corn and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1871, newly freed slaves established the community of Tamina—then called “Tammany”—north of Houston, near the rich timber lands of Montgomery County. Located in proximity to the just-completed railroad from Conroe to Houston, the community benefited from the burgeoning local lumber industry and available transportation. The residents built homes, churches, a one-room school, and a general store. Over time, urban growth has had a powerful impact on Tamina. The sprawling communities of The Woodlands, Shenandoah, Chateau Woods, and Oak Ridge have encroached, introducing both opportunity and complication, as the residents of this rural community enjoy both the benefits and the challenges of urban life. On the one hand, the children of Tamina have the opportunity to attend some of the best public schools in the nation; on the other hand, residents whose education and job skills have not kept pace with modern society are struggling for survival. Through striking and intimate photography and sensitively gleaned oral histories, Marti Corn has chronicled the lives, dreams, and spirit of the people of Tamina. The result is a multi-faceted portrait of community, kinship, values, and shared history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary methodologies include the "cliometric" style of historical analysis, econometrics, labour and regional study, and the changing parameters of government spending and public finance. The juxtaposition of classic theoretical statements with works by "outsiders" such as G.S. Kealey, B.D. Palmer, R.T. Naylor, R.E Ommer, among others, makes this a solid yet innovative record of the progress in economics over the last forty years. Canadian Economic History remains an essential classroom text.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Let Them Eat Shrimp

Download or read book Let Them Eat Shrimp written by Kennedy Warne and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-07-16 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s the connection between a platter of jumbo shrimp at your local restaurant and murdered fishermen in Honduras, impoverished women in Ecuador, and disastrous hurricanes along America’s Gulf coast? Mangroves. Many people have never heard of these salt-water forests, but for those who depend on their riches, mangroves are indispensable. They are natural storm barriers, home to innumerable exotic creatures—from crabeating vipers to man-eating tigers—and provide food and livelihoods to millions of coastal dwellers. Now they are being destroyed to make way for shrimp farming and other coastal development. For those who stand in the way of these industries, the consequences can be deadly. In Let Them Eat Shrimp, Kennedy Warne takes readers into the muddy battle zone that is the mangrove forest. A tangle of snaking roots and twisted trunks, mangroves are often dismissed as foul wastelands. In fact, they are supermarkets of the sea, providing shellfish, crabs, honey, timber, and charcoal to coastal communities from Florida to South America to New Zealand. Generations have built their lives around mangroves and consider these swamps sacred. To shrimp farmers and land developers, mangroves simply represent a good investment. The tidal land on which they stand often has no title, so with a nod and wink from a compliant official, it can be turned from a public resource to a private possession. The forests are bulldozed, their traditional users dispossessed. The true price of shrimp farming and other coastal development has gone largely unheralded in the U.S. media. A longtime journalist, Warne now captures the insatiability of these industries and the magic of the mangroves. His vivid account will make every reader pause before ordering the shrimp.

Book Crossing the 49th Parallel

Download or read book Crossing the 49th Parallel written by Bruno Ramirez and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the hundred years ending in 1930, an estimated 2.8 million Canadians moved south of the 49th Parallel and settled in the United States. The human and technical resources they brought made Canadian immigrants integral to the growth of New England, the Great Lakes region, and the west coast. Crossing the 49th Parallel is the first book to encompass that entire, continent-wide population shift. It brings Canadian migration to the center of both Canadian and U.S. history. Bruno Ramirez researches the contents of previously unused border records to bring to light the wide variety of local contexts and historical circumstances that led Canadian men, women, and children to cross the border and become key actors in the U.S. economy and society. Ramirez goes beyond these statistical data, consulting qualitative sources and case studies to reveal the motives and aspirations of individuals and family groups. The comparative perspective of Crossing the 49th Parallel allows Ramirez to explain the distinctive roles of French- and Anglo-Canadians in the immigrant movement. By shifting the viewpoint from a continental to a transatlantic one, Ramirez also unveils Canada's important role in international migration; it served as a temporary destination for many Europeans who subsequently remigrated to the United States.

Book Prisoners of Myth

  • Author : Erwin C. Hargrove

Download or read book Prisoners of Myth written by Erwin C. Hargrove and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1994-08-08 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prisoners of Myth is the first comprehensive history of the Tennessee Valley Authority from its creation to the present day. It is also a telling case study of organizational evolution and decline. Building on Philip Selznick's classic work TVA and the Grass Roots (1949), a seminal text in the theoretical study of bureaucracy, Erwin Hargrove analyzes the organizational culture of the TVA by looking at the actions of its leaders over six decades--from the heroic years of the New Deal and World War II through the postwar period of consolidation and growth to the time of troubles from 1970 onward, when the TVA ran afoul of environmental legislation, built a massive nuclear power program that it could not control, and sought new missions for which there were no constituencies. The founding myth of multipurpose regional development was inappropriately pursued in the 1970s and '80s by leaders who became "prisoners of myth" in their attempt to keep the TVA heroic. A decentralized organization, which had worked well at the grass roots, was difficult to redirect as the nuclear genii spun out of control. TVA autonomy from Washington, once a virtue, obscured political accountability. This study develops an important new theory about institutional performance in the face of historical change.
