Download or read book Public Workers written by Joseph E. Slater and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the dawn of the twentieth century to the early 1960s, public-sector unions generally had no legal right to strike, bargain, or arbitrate, and government workers could be fired simply for joining a union. Public Workers is the first book to analyze why public-sector labor law evolved as it did, separate from and much more restrictive than private-sector labor law, and what effect this law had on public-sector unions, organized labor as a whole, and by extension all of American politics. Joseph E. Slater shows how public-sector unions survived, represented their members, and set the stage for the most remarkable growth of worker organization in American history. Slater examines the battles of public-sector unions in the workplace, courts, and political arena, from the infamous Boston police strike of 1919, to teachers in Seattle fighting a yellow-dog rule, to the BSEIU in the 1930s representing public-sector janitors, to the fate of the powerful Transit Workers Union after New York City purchased the subways, to the long struggle by AFSCME that produced the nation's first public-sector labor law in Wisconsin in 1959. Slater introduces readers to a determined and often-ignored segment of the union movement and expands our knowledge of working men and women, the institutions they formed, and the organizational obstacles they faced.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its foundation in 1916 the American Federation of Teachers has been vital in the development of American education. Its contribution to better salaries, professional recognition for teachers, and improved schools has been immeasurable. AFT members have spoken out on a wide range of educational issues, and the union itself has taken strong positions on social, political, and economic policy. In 1969 the AFT designated the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State University, one of the nation's finest research collections on education, unionization in education, and related topics, as its official depository. A wide selection of articles, books, and pamphlets on AFT unionism is found in this bibliography, covering the years 1916-1979. AFT documents, reports and position papers, dissertations and theses, and manuscript collections are also cited for the interested researcher. The Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, Wayne State University, was founded in 1960 to collect, preserve, and make available original materials pertaining to the American labor movement, twentieth-century urban America, and related social and economic reform movements. Over 40,000 linear feet of correspondence, minutes, proceedings, newspapers, photographs, tape recordings, personal papers of members, and other items have been gathered from major unions in the United States, making the Archives one of the finest research collections on labor history in the world.

Download or read book Conservative Counterrevolution written by Tula A Connell and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, Milwaukee's strong union movement and socialist mayor seemed to embody a dominant liberal consensus that sought to continue and expand the New Deal. Tula Connell explores how business interests and political conservatives arose to undo that consensus, and how the resulting clash both shaped a city and helped redefine postwar American politics. Connell focuses on Frank Zeidler, the city's socialist mayor. Zeidler's broad concept of the public interest at times defied even liberal expectations. At the same time, a resurgence of conservatism with roots presaging twentieth-century politics challenged his initiatives in public housing, integration, and other areas. As Connell shows, conservatives created an anti-progressive game plan that included a well-funded media and PR push; an anti-union assault essential to the larger project of delegitimizing any government action; opposition to civil rights; and support from a suburban silent majority. In the end, the campaign undermined notions of the common good essential to the New Deal order. It also sowed the seeds for grassroots conservatism's more extreme and far-reaching future success.
