Book Load Deformation Behavior of a Compacted Silty Clay Under Different Forms of Loading

Download or read book Load Deformation Behavior of a Compacted Silty Clay Under Different Forms of Loading written by Bassam Afif Zeid and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate the load - deformation behavior of a compacted silty clay using different forms of loading. Specifically, the potential existence of an axial strain at failure at which failure occurs irrespective of the previous deviator stress history was investigated. Results indicated that such a strain value did exist and was a function of compaction variables (dry density, and compaction moisture content), and applied confining pressure, The axial strain at failure remained essentially unchanged under creep loading, triaxinl loadƠing at different strain rate application, triaxial loadƠing after long term sustained application of confining pressure, triaxial loading after cyclic deviator stress application and repeated loading. However, the strength seemed to be dependent on stress history and curing age of the compacted clay (thixotropic effects). A proposed hypothesis was used to explain the influence of stress history and thixotropy on strength. Improved creep and repeated load models were also developed to predict load - time - deformation behavior for a wide range of stress applications and duration. Comparisons between theoratical predictions an experimental data agreed well. The failure strain phenomenon was incorporated in these models to develop relations between applied stresses and time to failure.

Book Dynamic Response and Deformation Characteristic of Saturated Soft Clay under Subway Vehicle Loading

Download or read book Dynamic Response and Deformation Characteristic of Saturated Soft Clay under Subway Vehicle Loading written by Yiqun Tang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-08 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Involving several areas of geological engineering, geotechnical engineering and tunnel engineering, this book describes the soft soil deformation characteristics and dynamic responses induced by subway vibration load. Based on field monitoring and laboratory testing data, with both comprehensive micro-and macroanalysis, the authors present dynamic characteristics and deformation settlement of saturated soft clay surrounding subway tunnels using dynamic and static methodology. Mechanism of deformation, failure in microstructure of soft clay soil, dynamic response, macro deformation and settlement are all discussed and analyzed thoroughly and systematically. Some of the research findings in this book have been widely applied by large subway companies and will have broader application prospects in future. All the above make this book a valuable reference not only for technical engineers working in subway design or construction but also for advanced graduate students. Prof. Yiqun Tang works at the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

Book Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials

Download or read book Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials written by H. DiBenedetto and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-03-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solutions for soil engineering and soil-structure interaction problems need realistic and pertinent experimental and modelling tools. In this work, extensive developments proposed by the invited speakers of the Lyon International Symposium held in September 2003 are presented, including experimental investigations into deformation properties; laboratory, in-situ and field observation interpretations; behaviour characterisation and modelling; and case histories. The contributions include recent investigations into anisotropy and non-linearity, the effects of stress-strain-time history, ageing and time effects, yielding, failure and flow, cyclic and dynamic behaviour. In addition, advanced geotechnical testing is applied to real engineering problems, and to ways of synthesising information from a range of sources while engaging in practical site characterisation studies.

Book Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials

Download or read book Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials written by C.-K. Chung and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 1382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the international edition of the proceedings of IS-Seoul 2011, the Fifth International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials, held in Seoul, South Korea, in September 2011.The book includes 7 invited lectures, as well as 158 technical papers selected from the 182 submitted. The symposium explored ideas about the complex load-deformation response in geomaterials, including laboratory methods for small and large strains; anisotropy and localization; time-dependent responses in soils; characteristics of treated, unsaturated, and natural geomaterials; applications in field methods; evaluation of field performance in geotechnical structures; and physical and numerical modeling in geomechanics. These topics were grouped under a number of main themes, including experimental investigations from very small strains to beyond failure; behavior, characterization and modeling of various geomaterials; and practical prediction and interpretation of ground response: field observation and case histories. Both the symposium and this book represent an important contribution to the exchange of advanced knowledge and ideas in geotechnical engineering and promote partnership among participants worldwide.

Book A Qualitative Stress Strain Time Model for Soft Clays

Download or read book A Qualitative Stress Strain Time Model for Soft Clays written by JHA Crooks and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful analytical modeling of the behavior of soils requires that these models incorporate the significant factors which control real soil behavior. To illustrate this point, a qualitative stress-strain (time) model for understanding the behavior of soft clays is described. The major feature of the model is the yield envelope--the locus of effective stress states in q-p stress space which result in a change from small strain response to loading to a large strain response. The model is used to provide a qualitative understanding of the behavior of soft clays subjected to embankment loading at two sites. Various features of the soil model, such as normalization of the yield envelope with respect to preconsolidation pressure together with use of strain energy as a parameter to define yield, are also discussed in relation to analytical formulation of the model.

Book Pre failure Deformation Behaviour of Geomaterials

Download or read book Pre failure Deformation Behaviour of Geomaterials written by R. J. Jardine and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1998 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past fifteen years experimental and theoretical characterisation of the pre-failure deformation properties of geomaterials has developed enormously. In recognition of these important research developments a Geotechnique Symposium in Print (SIP) was held at the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1997. This volume brings together the nineteen Geotechnique SIP papers which summarise the recent developments in measuring and understanding the pre-failure stress-strain-time properties of natural soils, and apply this information to practical engineering problems.
