Book excerpt: The first monographic publication focused on the Florentine UFO group (1968-1978), that conducts a historical analysis of its work, reveals its close relationship with the contemporary artistic, literary and architectural avant-garde and, finally, investigates its legacy for the contemporary project. The contemporary context is defined by a unique conjuncture. On one hand, we witness the revival of the Radical Architecture that from the avant-garde experiments of the origins recovers creative processes and iconographic fragments while nullifying the original ideological and political values. On the other hand, we see social protests in defense of fundamental rights of democracy, as in 1968. With these premises, Architecture is now reinvestigating those ephemeral experiments that have endured half a century as new “stone monuments” capable of indicating new perspectives for both research and design. Placing UFO group, one of the authors of those still poorly known “monuments”, at the core of the contemporary debate means investigating their formal and seductive aspects, but also the ideological, political and social values with which objects, installations and happenings have been innervated, transforming them into devices of an architecture nourished by literature, art and political commitment for the foundation of an eloquent and activist project even more radical than the well-known Superstudio and Archizoom. The collaboration between Beatrice Lampariello, an architecture historian specialized in the 1960s and 1970s, and False Mirror Office, a group of historians and designers engaged in the rediscovery of UFO group, lead to a monograph focused on the UFO’s work and an evaluation of their legacy relative to contemporary architecture. This monograph is composed of three sections: 1) History, a first-ever study of UFO by False Mirror Office via analysis of all archival and bibliographic sources, as well as a series of interviews with UFO members and a collection of its writings (published and unpublished), for the first time translated into English; 2) Context, composed of essays by historians and architectural theorists (Beatrice Lampariello, Simon Sadler, Anna Rosellini, Giovanni Galli, Jacopo Galimberti) intended to place UFO’s work in the context of the avant-garde that influenced its work, from the experience of Florentine Radical Architecture to Umberto Eco’s theories on semiotics and the American experiences between Pop Art, Video Art and Happening; 3) Legacy, articulated through graphic contribution and essays by young designers, as False Mirror Office, Parasite 2.0, Point Supreme, Jimenez Lai, Andrew Kovacs, Adam Nathaniel Furman, Traumnovelle, (ab)Normal and Peter Behrbohm, to investigate UFO’s legacy relative to the contemporary revival of the most distinguishing creative processes and obsessions that shaped the so-called Radical Architecture. Book excerpt: [Italiano]: Il lavoro progettuale condotto sulla città di Frattaminore ha rappresentato, per gli studenti all’ultimo anno del corso di studi in Architettura 5UE, un esperimento di grande rilevanza, dal punto di vista progettuale e professionale, verso lo sviluppo di un approccio teso a trovare una risposta adeguata e concreta alle molteplici necessità poste dalla realtà del contesto in cui opera. La pubblicazione raccoglie gli esiti del lavoro svolto nell’arco dell’anno accademico 2020-2021, ponendo in evidenza la molteplicità di aspetti e temi progettuali affrontati, così come la varietà delle soluzioni proposte. La struttura del libro rispecchia tale approccio sperimentale, a partire dall’esplorazione di alcuni temi e metodi preliminari, esaminati nella sezione “Saggi”; proseguendo attraverso lo strumento del “mapping” e dell’interazione con l’ambiente e con le persone che abitano i luoghi; giungendo, infine, alla messa a sistema e ad una “sintesi” delle informazioni e delle indagini effettuate attraverso le proposte progettuali, descritte nella sezione “Progetti”. Ciascun tema progettuale prevede un approfondimento teorico, attraverso un saggio introduttivo, e svariate declinazioni progettuali che provano in maniera alternativa a fornire possibili scenari per la città. Per provare a risolvere le criticità esistenti, ma anche per valorizzare le potenzialità e i vari patrimoni del territorio di Frattaminore, le proposte progettuali sono state costruite attraverso un meccanismo di innesto nell’esistente, non orientato alla definizione di una forma compiuta e di una funzione predeterminata, ma che, al contrario, ha consentito di lavorare su un’idea di forma aperta, che ha riutilizzato quanto esiste, che ha incluso molteplici possibilità di uso e che ha cambiato continuamente la propria perimetrazione, estendendosi e inglobando pezzi urbani di diversa natura. Scenari di nuovi possibili significati e nuove trasformazioni urbane sono, dunque, il risultato di questo lavoro, composto da diversi livelli di approfondimento legati all’idea generale di Frattaminore come città in transizione./[English]: The design work carried out on the city of Frattaminore represented, for the students in the last year of the Master’s Program in Architecture 5UE, an important experiment, from a design and professional point of view, towards the development of an approach aimed at finding an adequate and factual response to the multiple needs posed by the reality of the context in which it operates. The book collects the results of the work carried out during the 2020-2021 academic year, highlighting the multiplicity of aspects and design topics addressed, as well as the variety of the proposed solutions. The structure of the book reflects this experimental approach, starting with the exploration of some preliminary topics and methods, examined in the “Essays” section; continuing through the tool of the “mapping” and the interaction with the environment and with the people who live the places; finally, working on assembling and defining a “synthesis” of data and investigations through the design proposals, described in the “Projects” section. Each project theme includes a theoretical study through an introductory essay, and several design variations to provide, in an alternative way, possible scenarios for the city. To try to solve the existing critical issues, yet to enhance the potential and the various heritage of the city of Frattaminore, the project proposals were built grafting into the existing, not oriented towards the definition of a closed form and a predetermined function. On the contrary, it has implied to work on the idea of an open form, which reuses what already exists, including multiple possibilities of use and continuously changing its perimeter, extending and incorporating urban pieces of different nature. Scenarios of new possible meanings and new urban transformations are, therefore, the result of this work, made up of different levels of study and research related to the general idea of Frattaminore as a city in transition.
