Book Culture and the State

Download or read book Culture and the State written by David Lloyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the end of the eighteenth century to the late nineteenth century, a remarkable convergence takes place in Europe between theories of the modern state and theories of culture. Culture and the State explores that theoretical convergence in relation to the social functions of state and cultural institutions, showing how cultural education comes to play the role of forming citizens for the modern state. It critiques the way in which materialistic thinking has largely taken the concept of culture for granted and failed to grasp its relation to the idea of the state.

Book Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon

Download or read book Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon written by Linda Jane Holden and published by Gibbs Smith. This book was released on 2021-02-12 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A treasure trove of Bunny Mellon’s garden design philosophy and advice from her personal archive. Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon is for anyone who has enjoyed time spent in a garden, from aspiring garden makers to those who manage large estates. This collection is comprised of extracts from Bunny’s own writings and garden notes, as well as photographs and drawings from her archive. Chapters are organized by Atmosphere (sky, horizon, shadows), Climate, Light, Space, Shape, Maintenance, and more―readers will feel as if Bunny Mellon has come alongside as a gardening guide and friend. Bunny Mellon was of the affluent class and mingled along with her husband, Paul Mellon, in the circles of the East Coast gentry of the Kennedy and Reagan eras. But Mrs. Mellon, as she was respectfully called by those professional gardeners who worked with her most, wasn’t snooty about social position or afraid to get her hands dirty in the rich soil of her family’s Virginia farm. Beyond this, Bunny Mellon was known nationally and internationally as a style icon of her time, enjoying friendships with Givenchy, the Kennedys, and the like. Her personal passion was for design, and that was exhibited in her fashion and her garden. A late acquaintance, Linda Holden learned that Bunny wanted to write a gardening book but never found the time. Searching the family’s archive after Mrs. Mellon’s death, the editors―whom all shared personal relationships with Bunny―discovered a trove of photographs, illustrations, and writings and have now turned it into the how-to gardening book Bunny had hoped to write. Linda Jane Holden was a trusted friend of Bunny Mellon. She authored The Gardens of Bunny Mellon (October 2018). She lives in Chantilly, VA. Thomas Lloyd, grandson of Bunny Mellon, is president of the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, established by Bunny Mellon to honor her father. Lloyd lives in Washington, DC. Bryan Huffman, an interior designer based in Monroe, NC, was a close friend of Mrs. Mellon for ten years. P. Allen Smith is the TV host of P. Allen Smiths Garden Home and P. Allen Smith’s Garden to Table. He is a garden designer, conservationist, and lifestyle expert.

Book Morality in the Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes

Download or read book Morality in the Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes written by S. A. Lloyd and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-20 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, S. A. Lloyd offers a radically new interpretation of Hobbes's laws of nature, revealing them to be not egoistic precepts of personal prudence but rather moral instructions for obtaining the common good. This account of Hobbes's moral philosophy stands in contrast to both divine command and rational choice interpretations. Drawing from the core notion of reciprocity, Lloyd explains Hobbes's system of "cases in the law of nature" and situates Hobbes's moral philosophy in the broader context of his political philosophy and views on religion. Offering ingenious new arguments, Lloyd defends a reciprocity interpretation of the laws of nature through which humanity's common good is secured.

Book Waking Up at Rembrandt s

Download or read book Waking Up at Rembrandt s written by Thomas Lloyd Qualls and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his words, Thomas Lloyd Qualls has painted for us a bridge between prose and poetry, between literary fiction and spirituality, and between every novel which has come before Waking Up at Rembrandt's and those which will follow. In the sanctuary of caf rembrandt, all the little things that happen in a day are imbued with light. Whipping fresh cream is an act of poetry and pouring a drink is an act of faith. With a voice that is at once prophetic, immediate, and lyrical, a woman who is equal parts purveyor of spirits and spiritual guru leads us on a different kind of journey through the stories of three lives in transition. As the characters begin to wake up, we, too, are awakened from our slumber. Like the paintings of the master himself, Waking Up at Rembrandt's is a luminous work of art.
