Book Brooke s Journey of Heart

Download or read book Brooke s Journey of Heart written by Beverly Charles and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brookes Journey of Heart is the story of a daughter who lives each day with the disabilities delivered with her at birth and the mother who gave birth to her. Beverly Charles asked her daughter, Brooke Klemme, if she would like to write her story of living with Spina Bifida. Brooke responded, "Yes! There are two sides to every story." Brooke and Beverly show us both sides of their story in the context of faith, family, and friends. In 1971, more than 6000 American children were born with Spina Bifida, but like most people, Beverly Charles knew nothing about this condition until she gave birth to her third and last child. In this touching memoir co-authored by Charles and her daughter Brooke Klemme, we learn first-hand not only what it means, but what it feels like - to raise a disabled child, to watch her suffer and triumph, and to be that child, who now as an adult, tells her side of the story. Most parents will never have to answer this question - should your new baby live? For Brooke's mother, there was only one answer, an answer that would involve multiple surgical procedures, interminable hospital stays, and an army of doctors and therapists - an answer that would change her and her family forever. This book is a spiritual memoir and a medical one. The authors make connections with Eastern and Western religious practices that have seen them through difficult and joyous times for over four decades. Their story transcends the personal to offer hope and help to other parents who have faced the same hard question and who, like Beverly and Brooke, answer "YES." As one reader said, I loved it. I laughed, cried, got mad, got sad, and now feel like a part of your family.

Spina bifida is a defect in the development of the vertebrae, leaving part of the spinal cord exposed. More than 70,000 people today live with spina bifida, according to the Spina Bifida Association. Scientists aren’t sure exactly why people get spina bifida, but they believe it has to do with a combination of genes and the environment. One of the best ways to prevent spina bifida is to take folic acid vitamins for at least one month before getting pregnant and during the pregnancy. In this book, students learn about the history of spina bifida, genetics and inheritance of traits, genetic mutations, who can have spina bifida and how it is treated, and the medical advances in research.

Feeling like an outcast, Meetra persevered years of bullying and mocking remarks from peers and was able to rise above it stronger. From navigating school, independent living, experiencing her first love, solo international travel, mental health scares and finally to rising above challenges as a disabled adult in our society, Meetra's powerful memoir sheds light on an incredible life living with a physical disability in a world that was not equipped to see her thrive. Being thrown into the unknown cliché of "too able to be disabled" paved the way for much of Meetra's passions and endeavors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is this happening? Why him? Why us? I can't count the number of times those words echoed through my mind over the course of the summer of 2017. There is no more powerless feeling for a parent than being forced to watch as their child battles for his health & well being. At my wife's 20 week ultrasound, we expected to learn the sex of our second munchkin, but instead our world was crumbled. Words like Spina Bifida, Arnold Chiari Malformation, Myelomeningocele & Hydrocephalus destroyed the excitement we held and replaced it with more uncertainty than we knew existed. The next weeks & months were a whirlwind as we met with specialists and flew across the country so that my wife could undergo fetal surgery to close the opening in my son's back, as well as give him the best chance for a life of worthwhile quality. We would remain there for 4 months, away from our oldest son & our home. Our little Loxley Poet had our hearts from the beginning, so it was never a question as to if we would do all in our power to give him the best chance. It was only a matter of how and when? The amazing people in our lives, our friends & family, made sure we had everything we needed, support in all shapes and sizes. Our journey being what it was, I decided that I could look at it as a burden or as an opportunity. Instead of asking ourselves 'why, ' perhaps we should have been asking ourselves, 'why not?' So, thats what we did. We would handle this and we would thrive, because thats what families do. That's how we survive. That's how we live. This book is for my little warrior, all of his twice born brothers & sisters, as well as their selfless families willing to sacrifice some so that their children may have it all.
