Book Preserving South Street Seaport

Download or read book Preserving South Street Seaport written by James Michael Lindgren and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preserving South Street Seaportatells the fascinating story, from the 1960s to the present, of the South Street Seaport District of Lower Manhattan. Home to the original Fulton Fish Market and then the South Street Seaport Museum, it is one of the last neighborhoods of late 18th- and early 19th-century New York City not to be destroyed by urban development. In 1988, South Street Seaport became the city's #1 destination for visitors. Featuring over 40 archival and contemporary black-and-white photographs, this is the first history of a remarkable historic district and maritime museum.a aaLindgren skillfully tells the complex story of this unique cobblestoned neighborhood. aComprised of deteriorating, 4-5 story buildings in what was known as the Fulton Fish Market, the neighborhood was earmarked for the erection of the World Trade Center until New Jersey forced its placement one mile westward. After Penn StationOCOs demolition had angered many New York citizens, preservationists mobilized in 1966 to save this last piece of ManhattanOCOs old port and recreate its fabled 19th-century Street of Ships. The South Street Seaport and the World Trade Center became the yin and yang of Lower ManhattanOCOs rebirth. In an unprecedented move, City Hall designated the museum as developer of the twelve-block urban renewal district.aaaHowever, the Seaport Museum, whose membership became the largest of any history museum in the city, was never adequately funded, and it suffered with the real estate collapse of 1972. The city, bankers, and state bought the museumOCOs fifty buildings and leased them back at terms that crippled the museum financially. That led to the controversial construction of the Rouse Company's New Fulton Market (1983) and Pier 17 mall (1985). Lindgren chronicles these years of struggle, as the defenders of the people-oriented museum and historic district tried to save the original streets and buildings and the largest fleet of historic ships in the country from the schemes of developers, bankers, politicians, and even museum administrators.aaThough the Seaport MuseumOCOs finances were always tenuous, the neighborhood and the museum were improving until the tragedy of 9/11. But the prolonged recovery brought on dysfunctional museum managers and indifference, if not hostility, from City Hall. Superstorm Sandy then dealt a crushing blow. Today, the future of this pioneering museum, designated by Congress as AmericaOCOs National Maritime Museum, is in doubt, as its waterfront district is eyed by powerful commercial developers. aWhileaPreserving South Street Seaportareveals the pitfalls of privatizing urban renewal, developing museum-corporate partnerships, and introducing a professional regimen over a peopleOCOs movement, it also tells the story of how a seedy, decrepit piece of waterfront became a wonderful venue for all New Yorkers and visitors from around the world to enjoy. aThis book will appeal to a wide audience of readers in the history and practice of museums, historic preservation, urban history and urban development, and contemporary New York City.a a This book is supported by a grant from Furthermore: a program of the J.M. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain said: "...Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't." It's been over a decade since we last visited The House On South Street. More of its background story has been revealed (in dreams), in fact and in confidence. The missing pieces start to fall into place as the real "characters" are unmasked. The house continues to brood in its somber way and yes, it still kills.

Book excerpt: Evil lives in the House on South Street, waiting to devour all who live within its walls. Every family who has ever owned the stately Victorian mansion has experienced tragedy and misery, caused by sinister spirits that haunt the House on South Street to this very day. Seekers of the paranormal will not be disappointed in the story of the house. Sometimes, the activities of evil spirits within the premises are so subtle, unbelievers could easily explain away their handiwork, but at other times, ghostly creatures burst upon the scene with inexplicable, supernatural fury; making it nearly impossible to find a rational explanation for the acts of havoc they wreak. In all cases, the spirits within the house are obviously bent on controlling and possessing the very souls and destinies of all the people in their midst. Once you enter The House on South Street, you may look at eerie old houses in a new way and thinking more about that subtle movement of a curtain or the shadow that crosses in front of a window

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Street is Barbara G. Mensch's evocative tribute to the lost world of Lower Manhattan's Fulton Fish Market. For more than a century, a colorful, tightly knit community of fishmongers, many of them recent immigrants and children of immigrants, thrived under the base of the Brooklyn Bridge. Resistant to government regulations and corporate encroachment, these men lived in a closed, internally policed world that was deeply hostile to outsiders. As a young photographer in the early 1980s, Mensch bonded with this particular group of "authentic New Yorkers," becoming a confidante for their life stories, which were often filled with hardship, mystery, and misadventures. These striking photographs capture the unique personality and fierce secrecy of their vibrant working-class culture. Combined with lively commentary--reminiscent of Studs Terkel's riveting oral histories--the images offer a rare peek inside a society described by Philip Lopate as "a precious last vestige of historic Gotham." Mensch's story ends with the closure of the docks and the opening of the Seaport mall, a symbolic victory of corporate interests over more than a century of mob rule. Her visual essay recounts the driving forces and the effects of this urban transformation on the entrenched community of fishmongers, creating an enduring historical document. Though the Fulton Fish Market no longer resides below the Brooklyn Bridge, the history and energy of this cherished New York City landmark are beautifully preserved in this book.

A story about the consequences of an overwhelmed justice system” (West End Word). On a crisp December day in 1963, Nancy Zanone left her young son and daughter playing in the backyard while she went inside to check the laundry. She never came back. A troubled teen prowling for unlocked doors along Chippewa in South St. Louis surprised her in the kitchen and stabbed her to death. Despite Joseph Arbeiter’s confession and hard evidence, he was freed on a technicality. In response, Zanone’s family fought to change how juvenile murderers are tried in the state of Missouri. Local authors Vicki Berger Erwin and Bryan Erwin investigate the senseless tragedy and the family’s quest for justice. Includes photos

Book excerpt: A poet craving authenticity ventures into a gritty Philadelphia neighborhood in this novel by the award-winning author of The Chaneysville Incident. Philadelphia’s South Street is a world of contradiction. The hardscrabble neighborhood is filled with prostitutes and gangsters; working stiffs mingle with winos at Lightnin’ Ed’s bar. But the streetwalkers are nearing retirement, the gangsters are unemployed, and a community is thriving in and around a place written off by officials and politicians as blighted. Black poet Adlai Stevenson Brown makes his way to South Street in search of authenticity in the form of a neighborhood to save. But the world of South Street—beyond its grit and danger—is more than the cultured young fish out of water ever expected . . . and a lot more than he can handle. PEN/Faulkner Award–winner David Bradley’s marvelous debut novel is riotously funny and keenly insightful in equal measure. South Street is a magnificent evocation not only of a vanished time, but of an American archetype in Adlai—a man in search of someone to save, unaware that he himself may need saving.

Book Settling Scores

Download or read book Settling Scores written by Joseph Franklin and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "SETTLING SCORES: A Life in the Margins of American Music" details one life lived in the margins of America's musical consciousness. From a working-class background in gritty North Philadelphia to the sanctity of European concert stages, from imagined dangers lurking along the waterfronts in mysterious Asian cities to the real dangers lurking in the narrow minds of those who uphold the status quo in American music, this book reveals the life of one who embraced change, and, in the process, gained political leverage and intellectual freedom. It is the story of Joseph Franklin and a legion of collaborators, and it is a snapshot view of a slice of America's musical landscape in the final quarter of the 20th century, including a history of Relâche and The Relâche Ensemble. Born in Philadelphia, Joseph Franklin is a graduate of the Philadelphia Musical Academy and Temple University's Graduate School of Music. He has composed works for mixed instrumental/vocal ensembles, film, video, theater and dance. In 1977 he co-founded The Relâche Ensemble, which evolved into Relâche, Inc. a presenting and producing organization in support of the Relâche Ensemble. He served as founding executive and artistic director of Relâche until 1998. Independently, and as Director of Relâche, he has been a producer of concerts, festivals, recordings, radio programs, residency programs, international tours and other related music events, including the NEW MUSIC AMERICA 1987 Festival, NEW MUSIC AT ANNENBERG at The University of Pennsylvania and MUSIC IN MOTION, a nationwide audience development project. He formerly served as Artistic Director for Helena Presents--The Myrna Loy Center, a performing arts and film center located in Helena, Montana. He has published criticism and book reviews in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia City Paper. While living in Louisiana he developed and taught courses in arts administration and an overview of 20th century music at the University of New Orleans while serving as an independent consultant to arts organizations. He currently serves as executive director for Chamber Music Albuquerque, a presenting organization dedicated to presenting world-class chamber music ensembles in concert.
