The same design thinking responsible for amazing technology, products, and spaces can be used to design and build your career and your life, a life of fulfillment and joy, constantly creative and productive, one that always holds the possibility of surprise.
Download or read book Guided by the Mountains written by Michael Lerma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do traditional Indigenous institutions of governance offer to our understanding of the contemporary challenges faced by the Navajo Nation today and tomorrow? Guided by the Mountains looks at the tensions between Indigenous political philosophy and the challenges faced by Indigenous nations in building political institutions that address contemporary problems and enact "good governance." Specifically, it looks at Navajo, or Diné, political thought, focusing on traditional Diné institutions that offer "a new (old) understanding of contemporary governance challenges" facing the Navajo Nation. Arguing not only for the existence but also the persistence of traditional Navajo political thought and policy, Guided by the Mountains asserts that "traditional" Indigenous philosophy provides a model for creating effective governance institutions that address current issues faced by Indigenous nations. Incorporating both visual interpretations and narrative accounts of traditional and contemporary Diné institutions of government from Diné philosophers, the book is the first to represent Indigenous philosophy as the foundation behind traditional and contemporary governance. It also explains how Diné governance institutions operated during Pre-Contact and Post-Contact times. This path-breaking book stands as the first-time normative account of Diné philosophy.

Download or read book Now and Then written by Peter Gyulay and published by Peter Gyulay. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all live on the banks of the river of time. Some don’t believe that time exists, and physicists still aren’t sure what it is. Regardless of this, no one can escape the flux of life. All too often we hide from time, with our heads stuck in the past or the future. Mindfulness teaches us to be present each moment, to face what is instead of what was or will be. But is mindfulness enough? Should we only place our attention on the present moment? Now and Then presents an integrated approach to time that is grounded in the present but also focused on the past and future. It shows us that to truly live is to embrace time in all its aspects. It is a valuable tool for anyone who wants to practice being in the moment and enjoy a rich and dynamic life.

Download or read book Building in Research and Evaluation written by Yoland Wadsworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Einstein said we can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them. If we don't have the kinds of health and human services or even the kinds of lives, communities and organisations we want, then we need to think differently. Yoland Wadsworth offers an inspired insight and radically new proposition: that the act of our 'inquiring', of researching and evaluating together, is the way by which every living organism and all collective human life goes about continuously achieving the conditions for life. Building in Research and Evaluation explores this new approach for bringing about both wanted change and stability. By inquiring around 'whole cycles' of acting, observing, questioning, feeling, reflecting, thinking, planning and acting again, Yoland identifies how new life might be brought to what we do. 'Sound and persuasive, insightful, important and inviting. A great contribution' - Michael Quinn Patton, author of the best-selling book, Utilization-Focused Evaluation 'Brilliant. I'm not aware of any other book of this nature. The examples are impressive' - Linette Hawkins, social work educator 'I remain critical of 'systems' models and biological analogies for organisational processes, but this work is unquestionably original and in major ways innovative' - Raewyn Connell, sociology professor 'Highly original. an ambitious integration of concepts. Credible and useful. Grounded in pioneering empirical research' - Danny Burns, professor of organisational learning

Download or read book Living by the Sword written by Kristen Brooke Neuschel and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharpen your knowledge of swords with Kristen B. Neuschel as she takes you through a captivating 1,000 years of French and English history. Living by the Sword reveals that warrior culture, with the sword as its ultimate symbol, was deeply rooted in ritual long before the introduction of gunpowder weapons transformed the battlefield. Neuschel argues that objects have agency and that decoding their meaning involves seeing them in motion: bought, sold, exchanged, refurbished, written about, displayed, and used in ceremony. Drawing on evidence about swords (from wills, inventories, records of armories, and treasuries) in the possession of nobles and royalty, she explores the meanings people attached to them from the contexts in which they appeared. These environments included other prestige goods such as tapestries, jewels, and tableware—all used to construct and display status. Living by the Sword draws on an exciting diversity of sources from archaeology, military and social history, literature, and material culture studies to inspire students and educated lay readers (including collectors and reenactors) to stretch the boundaries of what they know as the "war and culture" genre.
