But with a young daughter to take care of and bills to pay, he enlisted in the recently integrated Air Force in 1951—never knowing that he’d spend the next fifty-four years serving his country. After serving a tour of duty in South Korea, he returned to the United States before being honorably discharged and then re-enlisting to work at the Air Force Reserve Center in Baltimore. Eventually, he became a civilian Air Force Reserve technician at Andrews Air Force Base before taking a job at the Federal Aviation Agency. He went on to work other jobs before becoming a chief with the Coast Guard’s Civilian Equal Employment Opportunity Division, in 1970. Later, he was appointed to a Senior Executive Service position as chief of civil rights, the military equivalent of rear admiral in the United States Coast Guard. Join the author as he looks back at a lifetime of making a huge difference in the lives of ordinary people—especially women and minorities—and living an active life after retirement in these memoirs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triumphant wins, gut-wrenching losses, last-second shots, underdogs, competition, and loyalty—it’s fun to be a fan. But when a football player takes a hit to the head after yet another study has warned of the dangers of CTE, or when a team whose mascot was born in an era of racism and bigotry takes the field, or when a relief pitcher accused of domestic violence saves the game, how is one to cheer? Welcome to the club for sports fans who care too much. In Loving Sports When They Don’t Love You Back, acclaimed sports writers Jessica Luther and Kavitha A. Davidson tackle the most pressing issues in sports, why they matter, and how we can do better. For the authors, “sticking to sports” is not an option—not when our taxes are paying for the stadiums, and college athletes aren’t getting paid at all. But simply quitting a favorite team won’t change corrupt and deplorable practices, and the root causes of many of these problems are endemic in our wider society. An essential read for modern fans, Loving Sports When They Don’t Love You Back challenges the status quo and explores how we might begin to reconcile our conscience with our fandom.

Download or read book The History of Loyola Basketball written by Fred Mitchell and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Only a seasoned journalist like Fred Mitchell could uncover the fascinating stories behind the Ramblers’ glorious journey to the NCAA championship. Mitchell details surprising, ‘behind-the-curtain’ events, which carry the reader on a breath-taking trip to an unexpected, hard-fought victory.” —Robert Jordan, Jr., Ph.D., Loyola University, Retired Anchor/Reporter, WGN TV - Chicago Loyola has become a national brand, led by a pragmatic, genuine, and unassuming head coach. Porter Moser is known for doing things the right way and encouraging his players to “buy in to the culture of the program” that stresses building character and encourages good sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect for the process. The over-arching national narrative of the 2017–18 NCAA men’s basketball tournament became the valiant and totally unexpected run made by the Loyola Ramblers to the Final Four. What a refreshing Cinderella Run that fans nationwide appreciated after a college basketball season overloaded with negative headlines. The fabric of the team was woven from the initial threads of the 1963 NCAA championship Loyola squad that not only captured a national title, but also made historic strides for college basketball and the nation with regard to civil rights and racial integration. While the nation was admiring the grit, maturity, and determination of Loyola’s relatively unheralded players, they also fell in love with the sincerity of Sister Jean—the ninety-nine-year-old team chaplain and pop culture sensation now featured on bobbleheads and memes across the country. This unique and colorful story is properly told through the voices of those who actually took part in the joyful games, without shying away from the painful incidents that represent a significant part of our country’s history.

Download or read book Full Court written by Greg Marecek and published by Reedy Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full Court tells story of an often-forgotten but remarkable time in St. Louis sports history--the era of the NBA's St. Louis Hawks. Author Greg Maracek has woven together a compilation of interviews from the Hawks players to deliver a history of a former perennial power in the National Basketball Association. Between 1955 and 1968, pro basketball closely rivaled the attention--and at times outstripped the success--of the baseball's St. Louis Cardinals. A storied rivalry with the fabled Boston Celtics is credited by many as the single most important catalyst to the national growth of NBA interest. Names of Hawks' stars became legendary to basketball fans. Leading the way is Hall of Fame superstar Bob Pettit, the first player to score 20,000 points--and later 25,000--in a career. Other Hall of Fame Hawks include Cliff Hagan, Slater Martin, Len Wilkens, and Easy Ed Macauley. Pettit's 50-point performance in the 1958 championship game, NBA doubleheaders at Kiel Auditorium, owner Ben Kerner's sometimes wild and wacky postgame promotions, division and conference titles, sold-out crowds, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Cousy, and one incredible St. Louis World Championship season makes for riveting reading not only for fans of St. Louis sports but also for lovers of NBA lore. Greg Marecek has been in the sports business for 35 years, serving as a sportswriter and editor, sportscaster, national sports syndicate, and sports-radio owner. He is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
Download or read book Living Large written by Elaine M Isaacson and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The character of Jordan Grimes emerged over a period of ten years. He is a criminal, but we find that he is a troubled soul as well. His ideas of life and the world get him into far more trouble than he would like, but as you will see, Jordan likes trouble. The other characters in Living Large are much the same as you and me. They have their character flaws and their oddities, but they manage to maintain a lifestyle that suits them and yet somehow continuously places them in harm’s way. Since one character is a police officer, he is one of many attempting to lure Jordan Grimes into a trap to pay for his crimes. Yet as with criminals whose lives have many facets, Jordan creates trouble without trying and is very difficult to pin down. As readers, you will recognize that in this book as well as in life, the people you encounter are a select group, those that are in your circle of friends or part of your work associates. These people may remain in your life a short time or your entire life. This story exaggerates that a bit, but that makes it all the more intriguing. I believe you will find it difficult not to root for Jordan Grimes, criminal extraordinaire, not because he is bad, but because even with his flaws, you can’t help but like his desire to persevere despite the odds against him.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • An inspiring and intimate self-portrait of the champion of equality that encompasses her brilliant tennis career, unwavering activism, and an ongoing commitment to fairness and social justice. “A story about the personal strength, immense growth, and undeniable greatness of one woman who fearlessly stood up to a culture trying to break her down.”—Serena Williams In this spirited account, Billie Jean King details her life's journey to find her true self. She recounts her groundbreaking tennis career—six years as the top-ranked woman in the world, twenty Wimbledon championships, thirty-nine grand-slam titles, and her watershed defeat of Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes." She poignantly recalls the cultural backdrop of those years and the profound impact on her worldview from the women's movement, the assassinations and anti-war protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, eventually, the LGBTQ+ rights movement. She describes the myriad challenges she's hurdled—entrenched sexism, an eating disorder, near financial peril after being outed—on her path to publicly and unequivocally acknowledging her sexual identity at the age of fifty-one. She talks about how her life today remains one of indefatigable service. She offers insights and advice on leadership, business, activism, sports, politics, marriage equality, parenting, sexuality, and love. And she shows how living honestly and openly has had a transformative effect on her relationships and happiness. Hers is the story of a pathbreaking feminist, a world-class athlete, and an indomitable spirit whose impact has transcended even her spectacular achievements in sports.
