But those aren’t his only talents. The YouTuber-turned-pop star also writes honest lyrics about relationships and love that his fans can easily relate to. Born in South Africa and raised in Australia, Sivan began singing as a child, performing at local charity events and making it to the finals of a TV singing competition. However, it was his YouTube channel that sparked his rise to fame. Viewers loved Sivan’s funny, relatable videos, and by the time he was 18, he had over four million subscribers. One of his videos even earned him a Teen Choice Award. Internet fame helped Sivan gain even greater notice. In 2015, he landed a record deal and produced the hit song “Youth,” which made it to the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. His most recent album, Bloom, featuring the lead single “My My My!” has been an even bigger success. Sivan has also worked in film, appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Boy Erased. The song he wrote for the latter film earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. The songs written by Sivan often take inspiration from the pop star’s personal life. He writes openly about his relationships with men, and his music videos often feature same-sex relationships—something few artists dare to do. While Sivan is confident in his sexuality today, he struggled with it when he was younger, for he didn’t see many gay people around him or in the media. He finally came out to his family at the age of 15 and has since become an advocate for LGBTQ rights. He’s also won two GLAAD awards for his contributions to the LGBTQ community. More recently, Sivan has kept busy with his collaboration with Ariana Grande on the single “Dance to This,” as well as appearing in her music video for “Thank U, Next.” In 2018, the artist also launched a yearlong world tour, including stops in Taipei, Tokyo, and Seoul, to promote his album Bloom. Sivan’s musical talents and engaging personality have allowed him to build strong connections with fans all

Book Constructed Geographies

Download or read book Constructed Geographies written by Jean-Louis Cohen and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major retrospective to emerge from the archive of Paulo Mendes da Rocha, shining important new light on his work One of the most acclaimed architects working in Brazil since the mid-twentieth century, Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928-2021) began building in the 1950s, championing an approach often associated with "Brutalism" but expanding well beyond it. He is widely recognized for having transformed the urban imprint of São Paulo. His best-known buildings include the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture, remarkable for its engagement with the site and its daring structure; the renovation of the Pinacoteca do Estado, with audacious metallic inserts; and outstanding private houses, starting with his own. In 2006, he became the second Brazilian architect, after Oscar Niemeyer, to win the Pritzker Prize. This retrospective catalogue is the first major publication on Mendes da Rocha since the establishment of his archive at the Casa da Arquitectura in 2021. A team of international scholars provides a comprehensive view of the architect's trajectory and the collective dimension of his work, along with thematic essays. Mendes da Rocha's identity as a South American architect interested in the geographic relation between nature and culture is underlined. The book's contributors explore his concern with the social and anthropogenic impact of the continent's development, as well as its colonial past and postcolonial future. The volume centers around twelve of his most important buildings and reprints two important essays on Mendes da Rocha's work. This will be an essential book on this significant figure of global modernism and will point the way for future scholarship on Mendes da Rocha and the architecture of contemporary Brazil. Distributed for Casa da Arquitectura-Portuguese Centre for Architecture Exhibition Schedule: Casa da Arquitectura, Porto (May 26, 2023-February 25, 2024)

Book Living with HIV in Post Crisis Times

Download or read book Living with HIV in Post Crisis Times written by David A.B. Murray and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, effective prevention and treatment policies have resulted in global health organizations claiming that the end of the HIV/AIDS crisis is near and that HIV/AIDS is now a chronic but manageable disease. These proclamations have been accompanied by stagnant or decreasing public interest in and financial support for people living with HIV and the organizations that support them, minimizing significant global disparities in the management and control of the HIV pandemic. The contributors to this edited collection explore how diverse communities of people living with HIV (PLHIV) and organizations that support them are navigating physical, social, political, and economic challenges during these so-called “post-crisis” times.

  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2024-10
  • ISBN : 1668007851
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Purest Bond written by Jen Golbeck and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This feel-good, comprehensive exploration of the profound bond between humans and dogs from Jen Golbeck, the “internet’s dog mom” behind the massive social media platform The Golden Ratio, and award-winning science writer Stacey Colino “will bring something magical and meaningful into your life” (Daniel J. Siegel, MD, New York Times bestselling author). Dogs have been considered people’s best friend for thousands of years, but never has the relationship between humans and their canine companions been as vitally important as it is today. With all of the seismic shifts in today’s world, rates of anxiety and depression have been skyrocketing, and people have been turning to their dogs for solace and stability. Amidst these dire realities, something wonderful has taken shape. In the United States alone, dog adoptions doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic. As people have brought furry friends into their lives for the first time or seized this opportunity to deepen the connections they already have, they are looking to understand how owning a dog can change their lives. Weaving together groundbreaking research and touching real-life stories, The Purest Bond is an “informative and fun” (Publishers Weekly) exploration of not just the social benefits of owning a dog but the science of how dogs improve our emotional and physical health, mental acuity, and our ability to focus and absorb information. Most importantly, they remind us of what’s right in the world—love, trust, affection, playtime, fresh air, and sunshine—even when so much feels wrong.

Book Music as Care Artistry in the Hospital Environment

Download or read book Music as Care Artistry in the Hospital Environment written by Sarah Adams Hoover and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-29 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of professional musicians working within the healthcare system and explores programs that bring music into the environment of the hospital. Far from being onstage, musicians in the hospital provide musical engagement for patients and healthcare providers focused on life-and-death issues. Music in healthcare offers a new and growing area for musical careers, distinct from the field of music therapy in which music is engaged to advance defined clinical goals. Rather, this volume considers what happens when musicians interact with the clinical environment as artists, and how musical careers and artistic practices can develop through work in a hospital setting. It outlines the specialized skills and training required to navigate safely and effectively within the healthcare context. The contributors draw on their experiences with collaborations between the performing arts and medicine at Boston University/Boston Medical Center, University of Florida/UF Health Shands Hospital, and the Peabody Institute/Johns Hopkins Medicine. These experiences, as well as the experiences of artists spotlighted throughout the volume, offer stories of thriving artistic practices and collaborations that outline a new field for tomorrow's musical artists.

Book The Un Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and Its Optional Protocol

Download or read book The Un Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and Its Optional Protocol written by Patricia Schulz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 1041 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the fully revised and updated version of the first comprehensive commentary on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and its Optional Protocol. It reflects the developments during the decade following the publication of the first edition in 2012, which has also seen a notable rise in individual complaints (more than 85), ten new General Recommendations, and six new inquiry procedures as well as numerous statements, partly in conjunction with other UN human rights bodies. The Convention is a key international human rights instrument and the only one exclusively addressed to women. It has been described as the United Nations' 'landmark treaty in the struggle for women's rights'. At a time when the backlash against women's human rights and the concept of gender-based discrimination is increasingly challenged by governments and powerful societal actors, the Commentary is an important instrument to hold all state powers to account on their international obligations under the Convention. The Commentary analyses the interpretation of the Convention through the work of its monitoring body, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. It comprises detailed analyses of the Preamble and each article of the Convention and of the Optional Protocol, including a separate chapter on the cross-cutting substantive issue of violence against women. The sources relied on are the treaty language and the general recommendations, concluding observations, and case law under the Optional Protocol (individual complaints and inquiries), through which the Committee has interpreted and applied the Convention. Each chapter is self-contained, but the Commentary is conceived of as an integral whole. The book also includes an introduction which provides an overview of the Convention and its embedding in the international law of human rights as well as the most recent challenges to women's human rights worldwide.

Book Live Like Nobody Is Watching

Download or read book Live Like Nobody Is Watching written by Anita Ho and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respect for patient autonomy and data privacy are generally accepted as foundational western bioethical values. Nonetheless, as our society embraces expanding forms of personal and health monitoring, particularly in the context of an aging population and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, questions abound about how artificial intelligence (AI) may change the way we define or understand what it means to live a free and healthy life. Who should have access to our health and recreational data and for what purpose? How can we find a balance between users' physical safety and their autonomy? Should we allow individuals to forgo continuous health monitoring, even if such monitoring may minimize injury risks and confer health and societal benefits? Would being continuously watched by connected devices ironically render patients more isolated and their data more exposed than ever? Drawing on different use cases of AI health monitoring, this book explores the socio-relational contexts that frame the promotion of AI health monitoring, as well as the potential consequences of such monitoring for people's autonomy. It argues that the evaluation, design, and implementation of AI health monitoring should be guided by a relational conception of autonomy, which addresses both people's capacity to exercise their agency and broader issues of power asymmetry and social justice. It explores how interpersonal and socio-systemic conditions shape the cultural meanings of personal responsibility, healthy living and aging, trust, and caregiving. These norms in turn structure the ethical space within which expectations regarding predictive analytics, risk tolerance, privacy, self-care, and trust relationships are expressed. Through an analysis of home health monitoring for older and disabled adults, direct-to-consumer health monitoring devices, and medication adherence monitoring, this book proposes ethical strategies at both the professional and systemic levels that can help preserve and promote people's relational autonomy in the digital era.

Book An Internet for the People

Download or read book An Internet for the People written by Jessa Lingel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How craigslist champions openness, democracy, and other vanishing principles of the early web Begun by Craig Newmark as an e-mail to some friends about cool events happening around San Francisco, craigslist is now the leading classifieds service on the planet. It is also a throwback to the early internet. The website has barely seen an upgrade since it launched in 1996. There are no banner ads. The company doesn't profit off your data. An Internet for the People explores how people use craigslist to buy and sell, find work, and find love—and reveals why craigslist is becoming a lonely outpost in an increasingly corporatized web. Drawing on interviews with craigslist insiders and ordinary users, Jessa Lingel looks at the site's history and values, showing how it has mostly stayed the same while the web around it has become more commercial and far less open. She examines craigslist's legal history, describing the company's courtroom battles over issues of freedom of expression and data privacy, and explains the importance of locality in the social relationships fostered by the site. More than an online garage sale, job board, or dating site, craigslist holds vital lessons for the rest of the web. It is a website that values user privacy over profits, ease of use over slick design, and an ethos of the early web that might just hold the key to a more open, transparent, and democratic internet.

Book The Metaphor of the Monster

Download or read book The Metaphor of the Monster written by Keith Moser and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metaphor of the Monster offers fresh perspectives and a variety of disciplinary approaches to the ever-broadening field of monster studies. The eclectic group of contributors to this volume represents areas of study not generally considered under the purview of monster studies, including world literature, classical studies, philosophy, ecocriticism, animal ethics, and gender studies. Combining historical overviews with contemporary and global outlooks, this volume recontextualizes the monstrous entities that have always haunted the human imagination in the age of the Anthropocene. It also invites reflection on new forms of monstrosity in an era epitomized by an unprecedented deluge of (mis)information. Uniting researchers from varied academic backgrounds in a common effort to challenge the monstrous labels that have historically been imposed upon "the Other," this book endeavors above all to bring the monster out of the shadows and into the light of moral consideration.

Book Combinational Immunotherapy of Cancer Novel Targets Mechanisms and Strategies

Download or read book Combinational Immunotherapy of Cancer Novel Targets Mechanisms and Strategies written by Xuyao Zhang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer immunotherapy, including immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, has revolutionized the paradigm in cancer treatment. However, the clinical outcome of immunotherapy varies considerably among patients and only a minority of patients achieve long-term clinical benefits. This is largely attributed to the fact that existing cancer immunotherapies, which concentrate on several classical targets (CTAL-4, PD-1/PD-L1, etc.) and limited types of immune cell populations (T cells), are insufficient to cope with the complexity of highly heterogeneous tumor microenvironment (TME). This calls for more efforts to not only expand our toolbox for manipulating anticancer immunity but also diversify our combinational strategies. To this end, it is urgent to deeper our understanding of cancer immunotherapy by using both experimental and computational methodologies from multi-scale perspectives: 1) novel targets from either tumor cells or non-tumor cells within TME (e.g., tumor intrinsic resistance drivers, new immune checkpoints, neoantigens), 2) in-depth characterization of more immune cell populations (e.g., macrophages, Tregs, B cells) and their interactions and dynamics within TME, 3) landscape of actionable targets in patient populations for combination design. These efforts will open the avenue of rational design of combinational immunotherapies, allowing researchers and clinicians to design novel targeting therapeutics or to optimally orchestrate combinatory strategies aiming to surmount resistance mechanisms and improve clinical outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the foremost and widely recognized Roman Catholic apologists, Patrick Madrid, published Answer Me This! "to provide factual, convincing answers to people’s questions about Catholicism." Upon inspection, we find his answers to be neither factual nor convincing. What Madrid has demonstrated for us, rather, is the typical approach of a Roman Catholic apologist: to overwhelm the ignorant and the naïve with sweeping claims, historical glosses and logical leaps that crumble under even modest scrutiny. When subjected to sober investigation, the Roman religion is exposed for the novelty it clearly is. Throughout his arguments, Madrid criticizes the inquirer for not being familiar with Scripture and history. Yet, it is Madrid who is ignorant—misreading and misunderstanding the source material, overplaying his hand and outrunning his coverage at every turn.
