Book Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat

Download or read book Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat written by Wayne Hughes and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major revision updates Wayne Hughes's 1986 landmark study that is credited with providing decision makers a sound foundation for battle planning and tactical thinking. The book integrates the historical evolution of tactics, analysis, and fleet operations, and today it can serve as a primer for anyone who wants to learn how navies fight and win. This second edition includes much new material on combat in the missile age and reflects the reconfiguration of many tactics for littoral operations after the fall of the Soviet Union. Hughes recreates famous battles to show how tactics have changed through the ages and the ways in which they have remained unchanged. He covers tactical interaction between land and sea, the sensory revolution of WWII, secret weapons and maritime surprise, the role in battle of leadership and morale, and the importance of surface warships in today's U.S. fleet. He suggests that naval tactics, unlike ground combat, are dominated by the offense and concludes that the great tactical maxim must be attack effectively first. A new chapter traces the evolution of missile tactics at sea and includes details of attacks on ships. Many changes emphasize joint operations and coastal combat. The already extensive appraisal of command and control and information warfare is further expanded to cover modern naval operations and the character of modern salvo warfare. In the tradition of Mahan and Clauswitz, this classic text incorporates literature, politics, and a knowledge of human nature. Indispensable reading for all those interested in naval tactics, it is also a valuable reference for wargamers

Book Littoral Combat Ship

Download or read book Littoral Combat Ship written by John H. Pendleton and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Navy plans to spend about $28 billion to buy 55 Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) and at least 64 interchangeable mission packages to perform one of three missions ¿ mine countermeasures, antisubmarine warfare, and surface warfare ¿ in waters close to shore. The Navy has been developing two different LCS seaframes and plans to select one for production in 2010. Due to the small 78-person crew size ¿ 40 core crew, 23 for aviation detachment, and typically 15 for mission packages ¿ the Navy is developing new concepts for personnel, training, and maintenance. This report assessed the extent to which DoD has: (1) estimated LCS long-term operating and support costs; and (2) developed plans to operate and support LCS. Illustrations.

Book Unrestricted Warfare

Download or read book Unrestricted Warfare written by Liang Qiao and published by NewsMax Media, Inc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three years before the September 11 bombing of the World Trade Center-a Chinese military manual called Unrestricted Warfare touted such an attack-suggesting it would be difficult for the U.S. military to cope with. The events of September ll were not a random act perpetrated by independent agents. The doctrine of total war outlined in Unrestricted Warfare clearly demonstrates that the People's Republic of China is preparing to confront the United States and our allies by conducting "asymmetrical" or multidimensional attack on almost every aspect of our social, economic and political life.

I've directed the Navy to consider a completely new design, existing ship designs, and a modified LCS."

Book Oceanography and Mine Warfare

Download or read book Oceanography and Mine Warfare written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-04-07 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental information is important for successful planning and execution of naval operations. A thorough understanding of environmental variability greatly increases the likelihood of mission success. To ensure that naval forces have the most up-to-date capabilities, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) has an extensive environmental research program. This research, to be of greatest use to the warfighter, needs to be directed towards assisting and solving battlefield problems. To increase research community understanding of the operational demands placed on naval operators and to facilitate discussion between these two groups, the National Research Council's (NRC) Ocean Studies Board (OSB), working with ONR and the Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy, convened five previous symposia on tactical oceanography. Oceanography and Mine Warfare examines the following issues: (1) how environmental data are used in current mine warfare doctrine, (2) current procedures for in situ collection of data, (3) the present capabilities of the Navy's oceanographic community to provide supporting information for mine warfare operations, and (4) the ability of oceanographic research and technology developments to enhance current mine warfare capabilities. This report primarily concentrates on the importance of oceanographic data for mine countermeasures.

Book Navy Tactics Doctrine and Training Requirements for Littoral Warfare

Download or read book Navy Tactics Doctrine and Training Requirements for Littoral Warfare written by John F. G. Wade and published by . This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The White Papers '...From the Sea' and 'Forward.. From the Sea' have shifted the focus of U.S. maritime strategy from open-ocean (blue-water) operations to near-land (littoral) operations. U.S. naval strength lies in the capability to conduct sustained operations on the high seas, but the littoral environment and the potential enemy which may be encountered there impose new demands on our naval forces. It is imprudent to assume that the U.S. Navy can transfer their open-ocean proficiency into the littoral unmodified. This thesis evaluates the U.S. Navy's ability to conduct operations within this environment through its Littoral Warfare tactics, doctrine, and training. Then corrective actions for building littoral tactics and doctrine are recommended. It is intended that the recommendations will initiate a tactical debate to better prepare U.S. naval forces for operations within littoral regions throughout the world.
