Book excerpt: The greater Perth coast is a biodiverse and ecologically vulnerable region, with its unique native plant species threatened by clearing, invasive species, fire and climate change. This second edition of Coastal Plants has been updated and expanded to provide a definitive guide to 128 of the most common plants of the Perth coastal region. It includes the key species used in coastal restoration, along with important weeds. The description of each species is accompanied by a distribution map and diagnostic photographs of the whole plant, flowers, seeds and fruits. The book also contains introductory chapters on the biology and ecology of the coastal plants, their biogeography, and practical approaches to the restoration of coastal dune vegetation. Coastal Plants is distinctive in its focus on restoration, which makes it valuable for community groups and individuals interested or involved in coastal natural history or restoration activities.

Book Flowers of the Pacific Island Seashore

Download or read book Flowers of the Pacific Island Seashore written by W. Arthur Whistler and published by W. Arthur Whistler. This book was released on 1992 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dream of becoming a beachcomber on some distant tropical shore has always held a particular fascination for Westerners. To be able to spend one's day relaxing under a tropical sun and walking a palm-covered beach bordering a blue lagoon has seemed like the ideal escape from the everyday pressures of the hurried lifestyle of our Western world. Ever since its European discovery, Polynesia has captivated the imagination of adventurers looking for an island paradise. Now, with the age of jet travel, a visit to the islands is no longer an impossible dream. Every year thousands of people fly to the South Pacific to spend their vacation in the tropical sun. One of the most remarkable features of Polynesia is the vast array of exotic flowers to be found growing everywhere in profusion. For those who are interested in nature, the easiest way to identify these exotic species is by using an illustrated book on tropical flowers. There are already a number of such books available, but most of these deal only with cultivated ornamental plants such as hibiscus, frangipani, and jasmine. These are well-suited to those who do not go beyond the confines of their hotel or local tourist attractions. But it is for those who seek out nature, away from the hotels, aways from the tourist attractions, or even away from civilization, that this book is intended.

Book British Plant Communities Volume 5 Maritime Communities and Vegetation of Open Habitats

Download or read book British Plant Communities Volume 5 Maritime Communities and Vegetation of Open Habitats written by J. S. Rodwell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-16 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Plant Communities is the first systematic and comprehensive account of the vegetation types of this country. It covers all natural, semi-natural and major artificial habitats in Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland), representing the fruits of fifteen years of research by leading plant ecologists. The book breaks new ground in wedding the rigorous interest in the classification of plant communities that has characterized Continental phytosociology with the deep concern traditional in Great Britain to understand how vegetation works. The published volumes have been greeted with universal acclaim, and the series has become firmly established as a framework for a wide variety of teaching, research and management activities in ecology, conservation and land-use planning.

Download or read book Observations of a Naturalist in the Pacific Between 1896 and 1899 Vanua Levu Fiji and Plant Dispersal Complete written by Henry Brougham Guppy and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 1121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable shape of this island at once attracts the attention: and indeed it is in its irregular outline and in the occurrence over a large portion of its surface of submarine tuffs and agglomerates that will be found a key to the study of its history. With an extreme length of 98 miles, an average breadth of 15 to 20 miles, and a maximum elevation of nearly 3,500 feet, it has an area, estimated at 2,400 square miles, comparable with that of the county of Devon. Whilst its peculiarly long and narrow dimensions are to be associated with the narrowing of the submarine basaltic platform, from which it rises together with the other large island of Viti Levu, its extremely irregular shape is closely connected with the composite mode of its origin. We have here exemplified the process of the building up of a continental island in the great area of emergence of the Western Pacific, that region which displays at various heights above the sea the ancient reefs and the underlying deposits of the Solomon Islands, New Hebrides, Fiji, Tonga, &c. But this process of construction has never been completed, and is at present suspended; yet it is in its incomplete condition that Vanua Levu possesses its importance for the investigation of this subject. This island has in fact been formed by the union of a number of smaller volcanic islands during a long protracted period of emergence. These original islands are indicated approximately by the 1,800-feet contour-level in the accompanying map. There is, however, no reason for supposing that the movement of emergence has altogether ceased. In the course of ages the extensive submarine plateau, from which it rises, will be laid bare; and the small surrounding islands that are situated upon it, such as Yanganga, Kia, Mali, Rambi, Kioa, &c., will be included in the area of Vanua Levu.
