Download or read book Literary Geography and Travel Sketches Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by William Sharp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Geography and Travel-Sketches, Vol. 4 It is Obvious that the choice of theme has been arbitrary. Where, for instance, is The Country of Thomas Hardy? But Wessex has been so exploited that further writing on the subject seemed to be superfluous. It is, however, equally Obvious that, to be adequately inclusive, not a single volume but a Cyclopgdia of Literary Geography would be necessary. The present volume aims at nothing more than to be a readable companion in times Of leisure for those who are in sympathy with the author's choice of writers and localities and if they share his own pleasure in wandering through these 'literary lands he on his part will be well content. Book Literary Geography and Travel Sketches

Download or read book Literary Geography and Travel Sketches written by William Sharp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Geography and Travel-Sketches, Vol. 4 The first time I saw Robert Louis Stevenson was at Waterloo Station. I did not at that time know him even by sight, and there was no speculation as to identity in my mind when my attention was attracted by a passenger, of a strangeness of appearance almost grotesque, emerging from a compartment in the Bournemouth train which had just arrived. I was at the station to meet a French friend coming by the Southampton route, but as I did not expect his arrival till by the express due some twenty minutes later, I allowed myself an idle and amused interest in the traveller who had just stepped on to the platform close by me. He was tall, thin, spare - indeed, he struck me as almost fantastically spare: I remember thinking that the station draught caught him like a torn leaf flowing at the end of a branch. His clothes hung about him, as the clothes of a convalescent who has lost bulk and weight after long fever. Book Italian Travel Sketches Classic Reprint

Download or read book Italian Travel Sketches Classic Reprint written by James Sully and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Travel Sketches It is a pleasure to acknowledge the ready and generous help which I have received during my years of wandering in Italy. This aid includes, not merely valuable directions for travel and letters of introduction from friends, both Italian and half Italianate English, but useful information and personal guidance cordially tendered, alike on the Continent and in Sicily, by local officials, such as directors of Museums and Antiquities, ecclesiastics, and military officers in charge of buildings where interesting remains of old architecture or fresco painting are preserved. Among these helpers on the road I wish to acknowledge special obligations to Cav. Cesare Pinzi, of Viterbo; Comm. Ettore Pais, formerly Director of the Museo Nazionale, Naples, and now Professor in the R. Universita, Rome; Dr. Giuseppe Pitre, the expert on Sicilian folk-lore, of Palmero; Cav. Capponi, Director of the Museo, Terracina; and Canon Filippo Muzzi, of the Duomo, Spoleto. It is to talks and walks with these and others, in whom special knowledge is fired with the enthusiasm of the con scious dweller among beautiful things, that I trace the livelier interest out of which has grown the idea of my book. While preparing these Sketches I have received valuable assistance from officials and from friends: among others, Dr. Thomas Ashby, of the British School, Rome; and my two assiduous friends, the Marchese selvatico-estense, of Padua. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Far Places In writing Far Places I confess to a definite object. Behind the descriptions of remote localities, the de tails of adventures, lurks the hope that the book may, in some small measure, encourage an interest in the science of geography. The word stirs memories of childhood days, of laborious learning of the names Of countries, their capital cities and other important towns, their physical features, the principal com modities each produces. But geography is much more than that. Without a knowledge of it, how can we understand history, and the tangled sequence Of political events? How can we visualise the eco nomic development of the world from those dim ages of the past when man was a wild animal hunting his prey much as the wolf does to - day, to this period of aeroplanes, of telegraphs, telephones and radios?
