It may not Offer the most direct route between two given points but as, avoiding the dusty high road, it leads the wanderer over verdant meadows, through fields of golden grain, or amid the still recesses of sheltering woodlands, he will not grudge the lengthening Of his journey. Along such path ways, which best afford opportunities for quiet meditation, eye and car are Often greeted by sights and sounds not seen or heard on the more frequented highway. Book The Part and the Whole in Early American Literature Print Culture and Art

Download or read book The Part and the Whole in Early American Literature Print Culture and Art written by Matthew Pethers and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this pathbreaking collection consider the significance of varied early American fragmentary genres and practices—from diaries and poetry, to almanacs and commonplace books, to sermons and lists, to Indigenous ruins and other material shards and fragments—often overlooked by critics in a scholarly privileging of the “whole.” Contributors from literary studies, book history, and visual culture discuss a host of canonical and non-canonical figures, from Edward Taylor and Washington Irving to Mary Rowlandson and Sarah Kemble Knight, offering insight into the many intellectual, ideological, and material variations of “form” that populated the early American cultural landscape. As these essays reveal, the casting of the fragmentary as aesthetically eccentric or incomplete was a way of reckoning with concerns about the related fragmentation of nation, society, and self. For a contemporary audience, they offer new ways to think about the inevitable gaps and absences in our cultural and historical archive.

Book Old English Scholarship in England From 1566 1800 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old English Scholarship in England From 1566 1800 Classic Reprint written by Eleanor Nathalie Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Scholarship in England From 1566-1800 In the study of English literature there comes to each of us a realization that one period of our language is wholly obsolete, and if we would read the literature of that period, we must apply ourselves with diligence to the perusal of grammars, dictionaries, and careqy prepared texts. A fact that we do not so often recog nize is that there was no English scholarship, in the strict sense, when Old English was a spoken language. How and when did this scholarship begin? How did it develop, and what obstacles did it meet? It is the object of this thesis to discuss the beginnings of Old English scholarship, and to trace its progress until it took a recognized place in the scholarly world. The definite limits of this consideration are the publication of the first Old English book, 1566, and the establish ment of the first professorship of the language in an English university, 1795. The material is chrono logically presented, both in the essay and in the ap pendixes. Each appendix is so arranged as to illus trate a particular phase of Old English scholarship. There are some things which I do not attempt to dis cuss; one is the subject of runes. That subject belongs to a linguistic study, not to an historical essay. Again, I do not attempt to estimate the scholarship of that time as compared With ours of to-day. Our debt to these early scholars is not lessened by a frank recogni tion of the fact that their work is practically worthless to the modern student. They are the pioneers, who blazed a trail which has now become a broad highway. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Titanic written by Filson Young and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-25 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was one of the earliest novels released following the Titanic's sinking, appearing just 37 days after the catastrophe. Despite its speed, it is considered to be one of the best written and stylish early works. Filson Young, the author, is a distinguished writer who has used his articles in the London Saturday Review and Pall Mall Gazette to advocate for improved maritime safety and the installation of secure radios on all ships. Having traveled the Atlantic alone and known several of the people on board the destroyed ship, his book blends fanciful recollections of the ship's initial few days with compelling stories of the sinking based on early interviews with survivors.

Book Virginia Woolf s Modernist Path

Download or read book Virginia Woolf s Modernist Path written by Barbara Lounsberry and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choice Outstanding Academic Title In this second volume of her acclaimed study of Virginia Woolf 's diaries, Barbara Lounsberry traces the English writer's life through the thirteen diaries she kept from 1918 to 1929--what is often considered Woolf’s modernist "golden age." During these interwar years, Woolf penned many of her most famous works, including Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando, and A Room of One's Own. Lounsberry shows how Woolf's writing at this time was influenced by other diarists--Anton Chekhov, Katherine Mansfield, Jonathan Swift, and Stendhal among them--and how she continued to use her diaries as a way to experiment with form and as a practice ground for her evolving modernist style. Through close readings of Woolf 's journaling style and an examination of the diaries she read, Lounsberry tracks Woolf 's development as a writer and unearths new connections between her professional writing, personal writing, and the diaries she was reading at the time. Virginia Woolf's Modernist Path offers a new approach to Woolf 's biography: her life as she marked it in her diary from ages 36 to 46.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first attempt to provide a basis for the interaction of the brain and nervous system with painting, music and literature. The introduction deals with the problems of creativity and which parts of the brain are involved. Then an overview of art presents the multiple facets, such as anatomy, and the myths appearing in ancient descriptions of conditions such as polio and migraine. The neurological basis of painters like Goya and van Gogh is analysed. Other chapters in the section on art cover da Vinci's mechanics and the portrayal of epilepsy. The section on music concerns the parts of the brain linked to perception and memory, as well as people who cannot appreciate music, and the effect of music on intelligence and learning (the Mozart effect). The section on literature relates to Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, James Joyce and the poetry of one of England's most famous neurologists, Henry Head./a
