This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the multifaceted challenges and effective strategies associated with mastering listening comprehension, particularly in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The book is structured into seven comprehensive chapters, each delving into a specific aspect of listening comprehension. The introductory chapter sets the stage by highlighting the importance of listening skills in language acquisition and the growing need for effective comprehension strategies in a globalized world. In the second chapter, "Listening Comprehension," the book delves into the nature of listening, differentiating between various types of listening and discussing why listening is often considered a neglected skill. This chapter provides a foundational understanding of listening as an active process that involves receiving, interpreting, and responding to spoken messages. It underscores the complexity of listening comprehension and the cognitive load it places on learners. Chapter three, "Factors Affecting Listening Comprehension," explores the myriad factors influencing a student's comprehension of spoken language. These factors include physical elements like hearing ability, psychological aspects such as anxiety and motivation, experiential factors, attitudes toward listening, gender differences, environmental conditions, and societal roles. By identifying these factors, the book provides a comprehensive view of the external and internal influences on listening comprehension. The fourth chapter, "Potential Problems in Learning Listening Comprehension," identifies specific challenges learners face, such as the inability to control the speed of speech, limited vocabulary, difficulty recognizing contextual signals, problems with interpretation, and the inability to concentrate. It also addresses how established learning habits can hinder listening development. The fifth chapter, "Possible Strategies in Learning Listening Comprehension," offers solutions by introducing metacognitive, cognitive, and social-affective strategies. These strategies aim to help learners plan, monitor, and evaluate their listening processes, utilize mental techniques to enhance comprehension and leverage social interactions to improve listening skills. The sixth chapter, "Students' Problems and Strategies in Learning Listening Comprehension in EFL Context," applies the previous discussions specifically to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. It examines how the general problems and strategies manifest in EFL contexts and provides tailored advice for learners and educators in these settings. Finally, the seventh chapter, "Model of Assessing Students' Problems and Strategies in Learning Listening Comprehension," presents a framework for evaluating the strategies' effectiveness. This model helps educators assess students' listening skills and identify the most effective interventions. Overall, the book offers a detailed analysis of the challenges and solutions in learning listening comprehension, providing valuable insights and practical strategies for both students and educators.

Book Vocabulary Knowledge

Download or read book Vocabulary Knowledge written by Scott Jarvis and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language researchers and practitioners often adopt tools and techniques without testing whether they really work as they should. This is understandable because most scholars do not have the time or expertise to properly evaluate the usefulness of all instruments, measures, and methods they need. It is therefore critical to have problem solvers in the field who gain the necessary expertise and take the time to scrutinize existing methods, identify problems, and offer new solutions. This volume represents the work of scholars who have done this; it is a collection of the latest advances, developments, and innovations regarding the modeling and measurement of learners’ vocabulary growth curves, current levels of vocabulary knowledge and lexical proficiency, and the patterns of lexical diversity found in their language production. Several of the contributors also address the complex but important relationship between automated indices and human judgments of learners’ lexical patterns and abilities.

Book Listening Comprehension in Vietnamese University EFL Courses

Download or read book Listening Comprehension in Vietnamese University EFL Courses written by Thi Duong Ngan Vo and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening is considered a "Cinderella skill" which is generally underestimated (Nuna, 1995), and a "problematic skill" especially when it comes to the EFL context where there are limited practice opportunities (Nowrouzi, Tam, Zareian and Nihmechisalem, 2015). WHile there is much research on EFL listening primarily emphasizing the employment of listening strategies to resolve listening difficulties (Gog, 2000 & Liu, 2002), there have been few studies of students' problems and strategies in listening comprehension (Rajan and Nimehchisalem, 2016). Therefore, particularly in Vietnam, more attention needs to be paid to listening comprehension issues and strategies in order to help develop listening skills for EFL learners. Accordingly, this quantitative study aims to determine whether teachers' approaches are appropriate for instructing students to effectively acquire listening comprehension skills in Vietnam. Common difficulties and strategies that students experience were discussed to gain in-depth understanding of the EFL listening learning context in Vietnam. Besides, teachers' approaches to teaching were investigated to see how closely they correspond with students' strategies utilization. As a result, the insights into the relationships among student's problems, their strategy application and teachers' instructional approaches were gained to provide practical suggestions for more effective listening comprehension classes.

Book Vocabulary Knowledge and Listening Performance in English Language Learning

Download or read book Vocabulary Knowledge and Listening Performance in English Language Learning written by Dongjing Han and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this book is to enhance English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' listening proficiency and provide pedagogical implications for vocabulary and listening teaching practice. This book gives particular attention to mastery of aural vocabulary knowledge to enhancement of listening performance in Chinese context. It provides a comprehensive picture of the role of vocabulary acquisition approaches and strategy practice in listening performance. This book evaluates the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension in English as a foreign language (EFL), which has not been sufficiently investigated empirically. In particular, it has an added focus on the use of aural vocabulary knowledge tests in detecting the role of vocabulary knowledge in listening comprehension. It highlights the role of vocabulary knowledge in determining listening success. Specifically, it draws scholars' attention to the contributions of aural vocabulary knowledge to listening comprehension. The study also confirms the previous hypotheses of higher correlations between aural vocabulary size knowledge and listening comprehension. Pedagogically, it confirms the significance and necessity of improving both aural and written forms of vocabulary knowledge and focusing on strategy-embedded listening activities in EFL listening education. In this book, each chapter is dedicated to a specific theme in EFL learning and acquisition, providing a China case study dedicated to further development of EFL education.
