Book Liquefaction Potential of Dams and Foundations

Download or read book Liquefaction Potential of Dams and Foundations written by William Frederick Marcuson (III) and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes and evaluates important modern developments in geotechnical earthquake engineering. The current state of knowledge allows for the safe design and construction of critical structures subjected to earthquake loadings, although generally the margin of safety that has been incorporated in the design is not known precisely. For evaluation of the seismic stability of existing critical structures, the state of knowledge is sometimes inadequate. In the analysis of existing structures, conditions that are clearly safe and that are clearly unsafe can be distinguished. Between these two limits there are some practical cases that fall into a grey area, which will only be narrowed by further research and new full-scale response data.

Book excerpt: This report documents the development of a three-dimensional elastic-plastic isotropic constitutive model for earth materials and demonstrates its ability to simulate a wide variety of observed stress-strain-pore pressure responses of fully saturated cohesionless soils. The model reproduces the hysteretic behavior exhibited by these materials when tested under hydrostatic and deviatoric states of stress, and accounts for shear-induced volume changes, strain-softening response, and progressive increases in pore pressure due to subfailure cyclic loadings. The undrained condition for fully saturated materials is simulated by the assumption that for each loading increment, the corresponding increment of volumetric strain is zero. The behavior of the model under simulated undrained triaxial test conditions is examined in detail and correlated with experimental data for saturated Reid-Bedford Model sand and Banding sand. It is recommended that the present constitutive model be incorporated into a suitable computer code for use in conducting numerical effective-stress analyses aimed at assessing the liquefaction potential of earth dams or other earth structures subjected to earthquake-type loadings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strength decrease due to increased pore pressure, previously referred to as liquefaction potential, of four sands, for which laboratory Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) had previously been performed, was evaluated by cyclic triaxial tests at comparable relative densities and confining pressures. Stress-controlled monotonic R tests were performed on one sand to compare potential for strength loss due to increasing pore pressure under static versus cyclic loading. the object of both test series was to develop correlations between SPT-N values and potential for strength loss due to increasing pore pressure. In addition, material constants for evaluating an elastic-plastic constitutive model were obtained during the monotonic R tests. The elastic-plastic constitutive model qualitatively predicts behavior in monotonic R tests.

Book Liquefaction Potential of Dams and Foundations Report 2 Laboratory Standard Penetration Tests on Platte River Sand and Standard Concrete Sand

Download or read book Liquefaction Potential of Dams and Foundations Report 2 Laboratory Standard Penetration Tests on Platte River Sand and Standard Concrete Sand written by Wayne A. Bieganousky and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is critically examined with respect to its ability to estimate relative density in situ. Six test specimens, 4 ft in diameter by 6 ft high, were constructed using Platte River sand and Standard Concrete sand. SPT's were performed, using field drilling equipment, on specimens under three overburden pressures and constructed to three relative densities. The results are presented as a family of curves correlating relative density with SPT N-values at the three overburden pressures. This research is an extension of a previous test series on Reid Bedford Model sand and Ottawa sand. The results from tests of the four sands are compared, and a statistical analysis is presented which produced an empirical equation relating relative density to overburden pressure, SPT N-value, and coefficient of uniformity. Comparisons are also made between this work and that of Gibbs and Holtz at the Bureau of Reclamation and Bazaraa at the University of Illinois. Conclusions are presented based on both series of tests. (Author).
