The dominant view suggests that environmental, economic, and social crises are best dealt with by growth in global output. The alternative view is that, to the contrary, economic, social, and environmental woes can only be truly resolved through the collective performance of an "inward turn." This thesis argues that while the path of localization is infinitely more in tune with the concept of sustainable livelihoods--ways in which people secure a living which reinforce environmental integrity, social well-being, and economic security--than is globalization, that selecting between these two polar options is a losing proposition. Alternative trade is a relatively new movement which is attempting to link Southern and Northern struggles for an ecologically sustainable and socially just system of economic interaction. After a description of the principles, practices, and scope (both current and potential) of the alternative trading system, the thesis narrows its focus to examine the effects of fair trade on the livelihood sustainability of several groups of coffee farmers in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.
