Book excerpt: Three papers are compiled here for research library directors: (1) "Background: Open Systems Interconnection," in which David F. Bishop provides fundamental background information to explain the concept of the emerging technology of linked systems and open systems interconnection--i.e., an agreed upon standard set of conventions or rules that, when implemented will enable computers of different manufacturers, controlled by different types of internal programs, to communicate with each other as equals with minimal prior negotiation; (2) "LSP (Linked Systems Project) and the Library Community," in which Henriette Avram provides an overview of the current status of LSP, i.e., a program involving the Library of Congress, the American Library Association (ALA) Research Libraries Group, OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), and other groups, that is attempting to develop a means of sharing data from one system to another without having to learn each individual system and having a prescribed terminal for each system; and (3) "LSP: Implications for Our Libraries," in which Dorothy Gregor imparts a sense of what linked systems will mean for the future operations of their libraries, e.g., being able to link local online catalog systems with the networks so that library users can move from searching the local catalog to searching OCLC. A list of 11 selected readings is included. (5 tables) (SD)

It covers what design systems are, why they are important, and how to get stakeholder buy-in to create one. It introduces you to a simple model, and two very different approaches to creating a design system. What's unique about this book is its focus on the importance of brand in design systems, web design, product design, and when creating documentation. It's a comprehensive guide that’s simple to follow and easy on the eye.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid crystal displays were discovered in the 1960s, and today we continue to enjoy the benefits of that fundamental discovery and its translation into a wide variety of products. Like liquid crystals, polymers are unusual materials, and have similarly enjoyed a great deal of research attention because of their vast applications and uses and compl
Download or read book Linked Economic and Animal Systems LEAS Model Technical documentation written by Aragie, Emerta and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The herd dynamics model (HDM) component of the Linked Economic and Animal Systems (LEAS) model specifically documented here is developed in the context of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Animal Sciences. The main objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive analytical approach or systems model capable of assessing (i) how animal herd or flock sizes change over time and in response to on-farm policies; (ii) how alternative national trends and policies affect future development of the livestock system as a whole; (iii) how changes in livestock policies affect people working throughout the livestock system; and (iv) how changes in animal-source food (ASF) production and prices affect the real incomes and consumption patterns of different population groups. The HDM developed provides a highly detailed description of the cattle sector while laying a framework that can be easily adapted to other types of livestock. The model allows one to closely examine the performance of the livestock sector disaggregated by agroecology zones or regions. The HDM is linked both ways with a core economywide model through economic variables such as relative prices of livestock activities, prices and availability of intermediate inputs including feed, and changes in supply of livestock capital in the meat and milk production sectors. Given the complex interplay in the livestock sector such as offtake decisions, death rates, milk and meat yield, and feeding practices (through quality indexed feed demand), the HDM developed under this project is a fully dynamic livestock sector model that provides several avenues for policy analysis on livestock management, the sector’s future trajectory, and its dynamics, given risks and opportunities within the sector and beyond.

Download or read book Physical and Data Link Security Techniques for Future Communication Systems written by Marco Baldi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on techniques that can be applied at the physical and data-link layers of communication systems in order to secure transmissions against eavesdroppers. Topics ranging from information theory-based security to coding for security and cryptography are discussed, with presentation of cutting-edge research and innovative results from leading researchers. The characteristic feature of all the contributions is their relevance for practical embodiments: detailed consideration is given to applications of security principles to a variety of widely used communication techniques such as multiantenna systems, ultra-wide band communication systems, power line communications, and quantum key distribution techniques. A further distinctive aspect is the attention paid to both unconditional and computational security techniques, providing a bridge between two usually distinct worlds. The book comprises extended versions of contributions delivered at the Workshop on Communication Security, held in Ancona, Italy, in September 2014 within the framework of the research project "Enhancing Communication Security by Cross-layer Physical and Data-link Techniques", funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research.
