Book Linguistic Survey of the Northern Bantu Borderland

Download or read book Linguistic Survey of the Northern Bantu Borderland written by Malcolm Guthrie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northern limit of the Bantu languages is one of the important linguistic boundaries of Africa and this and the subsequent 3 volumes provide an invaluable resource which delimits the frontier. Since a number of the languages investigated had not hitherto been recorded, while with others the published information was inadquate and confused the Linguistic Survey of the Northern Bantu Borderland can justifiably be described as a pioneering study. This volume consists of demographic information together with maps and tabulated indications of the affinities of the languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, originally published in 1957, contains the linguistic evidence for the classification of the languages encountered by the western team of the Northern Bantu Borderland Survey. To appreciate fully its implications it should be read in close conjunction with the appropriate sections of Volume 1 of the Survey, dealing with the demography of this area. The inclusion of some languages over others in this volume in no way reflects its demographic or linguistic importance, but simply indicates that the evidence was available to the Survey. The material is original and except where otherwise indicated was taken down by the team in phonetic script from local informants in situ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classification and distribution of the languages of the Northern Bantu Borderland between the Great Lakes and the Indian Ocean have been given in Volume 1 of The Linguistic Survey of the Northern Bantu Borderland, where however, the linguistic evidence on which the classification rested was not included. This is now set out in this volume, originally published in 1957. The languages have been divided into three categories: Bantu, partly Bantu and non-Bantu. within each category the languages have been grouped according to linguistic criteria. The choice of languages represented here has been determined by the availability of reliable linguistic material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this thesaurus is concerned with the spoken languages of Africa. Languages are grouped into a relatively large number of sets and subsets within which the relationship of languages to one another is locally apparent and uncontroversial. The volume presents the languages in classified order with notes on each language, their variant names and immediate classification, and reference to the sources consulted. One section offers an exhaustive list of the languages spoken as home languages by local communities in each state, together with details of languages widely used for inter-group communication, given official recognition, or used in education or the media. There are brief phonological analyses of a broad sample of some 20 African languages and a comprehensive bibliography and language index to the whole work

The final chapter is a synthesis describing the linguistic and historical relationship of the Sabaki dialects to each other and to hypothetical proto-stages.

Download or read book Africa Encountered written by P.E.H. Hair and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Hair’s aim here has been to explore the European written record for the history of Africa south of the Sahara. This effectively began with the arrival of the Portuguese on the Guinea coast and many of these articles focus on Sierra Leone; others extend the enquiry to southern Africa. One particular theme is the use of early vocabularies of African languages as a source for the history of local populations. At the same time, these studies help illuminate the European reaction to the peoples and the places they encountered.

Book African Language Structures

Download or read book African Language Structures written by Wm. E. Welmers and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wm. E. Welmers surveys a wide range of structural characteristics, both phonological and grammatical, of the languages of sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing on thirty years of experience in the analysis and teaching of African languages, and on work done on some seventy spoken languages, Welmers has organized the volume by linguistic topic. Thus there are extensive discussions of tonal systems in languages from all over sub-Saharan Africa, of noun classes and concord in the Bantu and other Niger-Kordofanian languages, and of the varieties of verbal constructions found in representative languages. African Language Structures emphasizes the organization of language data rather than the technicalities of theoretical linguistics. The material is presented in such a way that students working on the analysis of other languages can be guided in their procedures; Welmers suggests not only what types of structures may be expected, but also how they may be discovered and described. This work is unique in the depth of its linguistic insight over the entire spectrum of language structure and in the breadth of its language coverage. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. Book The Languages of West Africa

Download or read book The Languages of West Africa written by Diedrich Westermann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, originally published in 1970, presents a survey of the languages spoken in an area extending from the Atlantic coast at the Sengal River eastward to the Lake Chad region. The area covered by this volume is mainly a goegraphical one, so it follows that not all the languages included are related to one another, though a certain degree of homogeneity appears.

Book Linguistic Analyses The Non Bantu Languages of North Eastern Africa

Download or read book Linguistic Analyses The Non Bantu Languages of North Eastern Africa written by M. A. Bryan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, originally published in 1966, deals mainly with morphemes and with grammatical and syntactic behaviour. Although some vocabulary material is contained in this volume, and some more in the Linguistic Survey of the Northern Bantu Borderland, vocabulary comparison itself plays little part. The volume presents an overall picture of the working of representative languages from each section of the Handbook and provides grammatical material which will help future students in classifying the languages to their typological as apart from their lexical features.
