Two principles are proposed to determine the nature of the systematicity and interaction: the Principle of System Compatibility (PSC), and its corollary, the Principle of System Incompatibility (PSI). Book excerpt: Studies of bilingual behavior have been proliferating for decades, yet short shrift has been given to its major manifestation, the incorporation of words from one language into the discourse of another. This volume redresses that imbalance by going straight to the source: bilingual speakers in their social context. Building on more than three decades of original research based on vast quantities of spontaneous performance data and a highly ramified analytical apparatus, Shana Poplack characterizes the phenomenon of lexical borrowing in the speech community and in the grammar, both synchronically and diachronically. In contrast to most other treatments, which deal with the product of borrowing (if they consider it at all), this book examines the process: how speakers go about incorporating foreign items into their bilingual discourse; how they adapt them to recipient-language grammatical structure; how these forms diffuse across speakers and communities; how long they persist in real time; and whether they change over the duration. Attacking some of the most contentious issue in language mixing research empirically, it tests hypotheses about established loanwords, nonce borrowings and code-switches on a wealth of unique datasets on typologically similar and distinct language pairs. A major focus is the detailed analysis of integration: the principal mechanism underlying the borrowing process. Though the shape the borrowed form assumes may be colored by community convention, Poplack shows that the act of transforming donor-language elements into native material is universal. Emphasis on actual speaker behavior coupled with strong standards of proof, including data-driven reports of rates of occurrence, conditioning of variant choice and measures of statistical significance, make Borrowing an indispensable reference on language contact and bilingual behavior.

Book excerpt: Most historical Jesus and Gospel scholars have supposed three hypotheses of unidirectionality: geographically, the more Judaeo-Palestinian, the earlier; modally, the more oral, the earlier; and linguistically, the more Aramaized, the earlier. These are based on the chronological assumption of'the earlier, the more original'. These four long-held hypotheses have been applied as authenticity criteria. However, this book proposes that linguistic milieus of 1st-century Palestine and the Roman Near East were bilingual in Greek and vernacular languages and that the earliest church in Jerusalem was a bilingual Christian community. The study of bilingualism blurs the lines between each of the temporal dichotomies. The bilingual approach undermines unidirectional assumptions prevalent among Gospels and Acts scholarship with regard to the major issues of source criticism, textual criticism, form criticism, redaction criticism, literary criticism, the Synoptic Problem, the Historical Jesus, provenances of the Gospels and Acts, the development of Christological titles and the development of early Christianity. There is a need for New Testament studies to rethink the major issues from the perspective of the interdirectionality theory based on bilingualism.

Book excerpt: This dissertation reports on a longitudinal case study of four children's acquisition of two first languages (French and English) in the home. Specifically, it examines their use of phrases from songs, stories, and audio-visual media, a phenomenon which we have labelled borrowing. We propose a new definition of borrowing as a linguistic phenonmenon which can occur within languages as well as across languages. A "verbatim borrowing" is an exact repetition of a source phrase inserted into discourse. A "rephrased borrowing" contains elements which have been adapted to suit its use in a new context. We also distinguish between "referential borrowing" and "non-referential borrowing." Three types of linguistic or discursive triggers can cause borrowing to occur : a preceding utterance, an ongoing conversational routine, or the general context can trigger a memory of a phrase from a source text. Thanks to repeated and interactive shared experience of these linguistically and culturally rich source texts, children memorise fixed formulas and learn to identify variable slots in constructions. When borrowing phrases, they not only demonstratethe mapping of semantic and pragmatic meanings onto phrases, but also the ability to perform the syntactic operations required for the production of their own creative variations of source texts. This study highlights the beneficial role that songs, stories, and audio-visual media can play in the acquisition and maintenance of the minority language in a context of child bilingualism.
