Download or read book A Concise Course in Algebraic Topology written by J. P. May and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic topology is a basic part of modern mathematics, and some knowledge of this area is indispensable for any advanced work relating to geometry, including topology itself, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and Lie groups. This book provides a detailed treatment of algebraic topology both for teachers of the subject and for advanced graduate students in mathematics either specializing in this area or continuing on to other fields. J. Peter May's approach reflects the enormous internal developments within algebraic topology over the past several decades, most of which are largely unknown to mathematicians in other fields. But he also retains the classical presentations of various topics where appropriate. Most chapters end with problems that further explore and refine the concepts presented. The final four chapters provide sketches of substantial areas of algebraic topology that are normally omitted from introductory texts, and the book concludes with a list of suggested readings for those interested in delving further into the field.

Download or read book Computational Structural Analysis and Finite Element Methods written by A. Kaveh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graph theory gained initial prominence in science and engineering through its strong links with matrix algebra and computer science. Moreover, the structure of the mathematics is well suited to that of engineering problems in analysis and design. The methods of analysis in this book employ matrix algebra, graph theory and meta-heuristic algorithms, which are ideally suited for modern computational mechanics. Efficient methods are presented that lead to highly sparse and banded structural matrices. The main features of the book include: application of graph theory for efficient analysis; extension of the force method to finite element analysis; application of meta-heuristic algorithms to ordering and decomposition (sparse matrix technology); efficient use of symmetry and regularity in the force method; and simultaneous analysis and design of structures.
Download or read book Nonlinear Structures the Maxwell Mohr Work Theorem and the Displacement Method written by Bengt Å Åkesson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author had a desire to contribute to the advancement of a general theory for the analysis of statically loaded elastic structures with all kinds of nonlinearities permitted. The theory should set out from the conception of a structure as an assemblage of a finite number of finite members inter-connected in a finite number of loaded joints. Particularly, the author wished to suggest, develop, explain and term some new concepts in order to facilitate discussion and classification of nonlinear structure analysis, to introduce a compact notation to express nonlinear relations between matrices, to find a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of Maxwell's and Mohr's work theorem, to clarify the relation between Maxwell's and Mohr's work theorem and the duality (contragredience, cotransference) of the natural transformations, to formulate displacement method solutions for nonlinear structures, to examine the consequences of representing the member load by statically dependent components instead of statically independent components, to review, discuss and classify current methods for the analysis of non-linear structures, to inquire into the possibility of using matrices with variable elements in nonlinear structure analysis, and to peruse and list existing literature on nonlinear structure analysis. After deliberation, the author has decided to omit figures. Figures could illustrate only a few concrete cases, and they might spoil the reader's imagination of the general situation in structure analysis. Needed verification is probably best obtained through examples devised by the reader himself.

Download or read book Lecture Notes in Algebraic Topology written by James F. Davis and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of algebraic topology a graduate student specializing in topology must learn can be intimidating. Moreover, by their second year of graduate studies, students must make the transition from understanding simple proofs line-by-line to understanding the overall structure of proofs of difficult theorems. To help students make this transition, the material in this book is presented in an increasingly sophisticated manner. It is intended to bridge the gap between algebraic and geometric topology, both by providing the algebraic tools that a geometric topologist needs and by concentrating on those areas of algebraic topology that are geometrically motivated. Prerequisites for using this book include basic set-theoretic topology, the definition of CW-complexes, some knowledge of the fundamental group/covering space theory, and the construction of singular homology. Most of this material is briefly reviewed at the beginning of the book. The topics discussed by the authors include typical material for first- and second-year graduate courses. The core of the exposition consists of chapters on homotopy groups and on spectral sequences. There is also material that would interest students of geometric topology (homology with local coefficients and obstruction theory) and algebraic topology (spectra and generalized homology), as well as preparation for more advanced topics such as algebraic $K$-theory and the s-cobordism theorem. A unique feature of the book is the inclusion, at the end of each chapter, of several projects that require students to present proofs of substantial theorems and to write notes accompanying their explanations. Working on these projects allows students to grapple with the “big picture”, teaches them how to give mathematical lectures, and prepares them for participating in research seminars. The book is designed as a textbook for graduate students studying algebraic and geometric topology and homotopy theory. It will also be useful for students from other fields such as differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and homological algebra. The exposition in the text is clear; special cases are presented over complex general statements.
Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Mathematics written by Michiel Hazewinkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.
