Book excerpt: Here is the most detailed and most engagingly narrated history to date of the legendary two-year facedown and shootout in Lincoln. Until now, New Mexico's late nineteenth-century Lincoln County War has served primarily as the backdrop for a succession of mythical renderings of Billy the Kid in American popular culture. "In research, writing, and interpretation, High Noon in Lincoln is a superb book. It is one of the best books (maybe the best) ever written on a violent episode in the West."--Richard Maxwell Brown, author of Strain of Violence: Historical Studies of American Violence and Vigilantism "A masterful account of the actual facts of the gory Lincoln County War and the role of Billy the Kid. . . . Utley separates the truth from legend without detracting from the gripping suspense and human interest of the story."--Alvin M. Josephy, Jr.

Book excerpt: The town of Lincoln is nestled in the lush green valley of the Rio Bonito in Southeastern New Mexico. It lies on US Route 380 about 57 miles west of Roswell and south of the Lincoln National Forest. Lincoln has been a National Landmark since 1960, and historians often refer to it as the most authentic Old West town remaining in the United States. Spanish settlers arrived in the area during the 1840s. By the 1860s, Lincoln served as a supply center for local ranches, mines, and nearby Fort Stanton. Lincoln merchants vied for lucrative government contracts, and the famous Lincoln County War erupted. As a result, Lincoln holds a unique place in American history, connected with the names of Lew Wallace, Billy the Kid, Sheriff Pat Garrett, and John Chisum. Seventeen historic buildings and four museums highlight the town as well as an annual folk pageant, The Last Escape of Billy the Kid, held since 1949.

Book Lincoln County New Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lincoln County New Mexico Classic Reprint written by New Mexico and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln County, New Mexico Fortunately for the army of homeseekers now finding its way into the Southwest New Mexico has a number of favored regions as jet thinly populated and offering wide areas of good land, either open to homestead entry under the federal land laws, or which may be purchased at prices within reach of the man of limited means, thus offering opportunity to the man who is seeking to better his condition by establishing a home in a country as yet comparatively undeveloped and in which prospects for development and consequent profit are great. Lincoln county, over much of its great area, is one of these favored regions. Until the past four or five years the greater part of the county was considered fit only for grazing; but, as in many other sections of New Mexico, the application of scientific farming has demonstrated that crops may be grown without irrigation over very considerable portion of the county. The discovery of the possibilities of farming without irrigation has attracted wide attention to the county; homeseekers are turning there in constantly increasing numbers and the demand for information is great. The purpose of this book is to supply this information in compact, accurate form. In its preparation the Bureau of Immigration has had the co-operation of a number of reliable business men in Lincoln county who are thoroughly familiar with local conditions, and the information offered, having been carefully verified, may be relied upon. The effort throughout has been to conservatism in stating the resources and advantages of the county. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Lincoln County is often associated with such legendary figures as outlaw Billy the Kid, Smokey the Bear, and renowned painter Peter Hurd. Named after Pres. Abraham Lincoln in 1869, the new county saw itself through many struggles, including the Lincoln County War, during which cattle barons and landowners bitterly fought over government beef contracts and farmland. At that time, Lincoln was the largest county in the United States and is now home to modern mountain towns such as Carrizozo, Capitan, Ruidoso, and the locally famous ghost town White Oaks, which had been a gold rush boomtown. Lincoln County also contains the beautiful Hondo Valley settlements and ranching communities such as Tinnie, Picacho, San Patricio, Hondo, and Glencoe. From the rolling hills of the Hondo Valley, to the bloody streets of Lincoln, all the way to the forested mountains of Capitan, this retrospective explores the area's rich history.
