Download or read book Detroit Gesu Catholic Church and School written by Patricia Montemurri and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a reconfigured farmhouse just a mile outside of the city limits of Detroit, a Jesuit priest and 25 men, women, and children gathered to celebrate Sunday mass on March 19, 1922. The Reverend John McNichols named the Catholic mission church Gesu, the Italian word for "Jesus." Gesu became one of Detroit's landmark parishes. Its history illustrates the Motor City's boom, bust, resilience, and resurgence. It was the home parish of four Detroit mayors, powerful members of Congress, auto industry titans, sports legends, artists, authors, and actors. At its peak in the mid-1960s, Gesu School enrolled 1,600 students. Because of Detroit's decline and its racial and economic struggles, Gesu is one of only four Catholic elementary schools that remain in the city. But as Detroit rebounds, Gesu School is growing again.

Book excerpt: It's a story that's been waiting to be told for forty years, and now, thanks to that Old Iditarod Gang, Iditarod: The First Ten Years shares the behind-the-scenes (and newsmaker) stories with a scrapbook of stories, art, and photography from the dozens and dozens of people who experienced the first decade themselves: the volunteers, race officials, financial supporters, public relations folks, administrators, and the mushers. This highly collectible volume turns back the clock to those seat-of-the-pants years, when the single goal was simply to finish. And what an achievement that was in the days of wool and bunny boots, when mushers carried a seal or a caribou haunch in their sleds, and competitors stayed in checkpoints long enough to share a campfire, some music, and more than a few stories. They're here now, those stories, those images, bound into a rare anthology that you?ll enjoy for hour after hour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before the massive European immigrations of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Detroit had a tradition of Catholicism. Multiple immigrant groups became part of the city and considered it important to educate their daughters as well as their sons within the Church. JoEllen McNergney Vinyard's comprehensive examination of parochial education in Detroit within the broader context of that city's urbanization patterns yields a richly detailed addition to our understanding of the European immigrant experience. For Faith and Fortune will be of interest to historians and scholars of urban studies, particularly immigration, schooling, and the Catholic experience.

Download or read book Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities written by Henci Goer and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1995-02-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone working to improve the childbearing experience and help women avoid unnecessary intervention has encountered numerous obstetric myths or old doctors' tales. And while the evidence in the medical literature may be solidly, often unequivocably, against whatever the doctor said, without access to that evidence, the pregnant woman is quite reasonably going to follow her doctor. This book is an attempt to make the medical literature on a variety of key obstetric issues accessible to people who lack the time, expertise, access, or proximity to a medical library to research concerns on their own. This compact, accurate, yet understandable reference is designed for people without medical training and organized for easy access. After an introductory chapter giving basic information about the different types of medical studies, how to evaluate them, and some basic statistical concepts, Goer provides chapters on cesarean issues, pregnancy and labor management, and a review of alternative approaches. Each chapter begins with a stated myth, followed by an examination of the reality. Goer then analyzes the mainstream belief, pointing out its fallacies. Then comes a list of significant points gleaned from the studies and keyed to her abstracts. Next is the outline by which the abstracts are grouped. Finally come the numbered abstracts of relevant articles published, in most cases, after 1980. The book concludes with a glossary of medical terms and an index. This compact, accurate, and understandable reference tool is designed for people without medical training as well as care givers.
