Book Reassessment of Data Used in Setting Exposure Limits for Hot Particles

Download or read book Reassessment of Data Used in Setting Exposure Limits for Hot Particles written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical review and a reassessment of data reviewed in NCRP Report 106 on effects of hot particles'' on the skin of pigs, monkeys, and humans were made. Our analysis of the data of Forbes and Mikhail on effects from activated UC2 particles, ranging in diameter from 144 [mu]m to 328 [mu]m, led to the formulation of a new model for prediction of both the threshold for acute ulceration and for ulcer diameter. A dose of 27 Gy at a depth of 1.33 mm in tissue in this model will result in an acute ulcer with a diameter determined by the radius over which this dose (at 1.33-mm depth) extends. Application of the model to the Forbes-Mikhail data yielded a threshold'' (5% probability) of 6 × 109 beta particles from a point source on skin of mixed fission product beta particles, or about 101° beta particles from Sr--Y-90, since few of the Sr-90 beta particles reach this depth. The data of Hopewell et al. for their 1 mm Sr-Y-90 exposures were also analyzed with the above model and yielded a predicted threshold of 2 × 101° Sr-Y-90 beta particles for a point source on skin. Dosimetry values were employed in this latter analysis that are 3.3 times higher than previously reported for this source. An alternate interpretation of the Forbes and Mikhail data, derived from linear plots of the data, is that the threshold depends strongly on particle size with the smaller particles yielding a much lower threshold and smaller minimum size ulcer. Additional animal exposures are planned to distinguish between the above explanations. 17 refs., 3 figs., 3 tabs.

Download or read book Radiation Protection written by Jacob Shapiro and published by La Editorial, UPR. This book was released on 2002 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly successful manual has served for nearly three decades as the definitive guide to the safe use of radioactive materials. Completely revised and updated, the fourth edition presents a new dimension by adding coverage of nonionizing radiation, and is thus concerned with the entire field of radiation protection. The author takes the novel approach of introducing the whole range of energies possessed by particles and electromagnetic waves at the beginning of the text, thus integrating coverage of ionizing and nonionizing radiation rather than considering them as two separate disciplines. He goes on to cover the entire spectrum of radiation sources, including radionuclides, x-ray machines, accelerators, nuclear reactors, power lines, microwave towers, and cellular phones. With its expanded coverage, including a broader focus on public health issues, this new volume will serve as an important training and reference resource, not only for research scientists, physicians, and engineers, but for regulatory officials, attorneys, engineers, and environmental health and safety professionals. The breadth of citations alone makes this resource invaluable.

Book Niosh Criteria for a Recommended Standard Occupational Exposure to Heat and Hot Environments

Download or read book Niosh Criteria for a Recommended Standard Occupational Exposure to Heat and Hot Environments written by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (U.S.) and published by National Institute on Drug Abuse. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupational exposure to heat can result in injuries, disease, reduced productivity, and death. To address this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated the scientific data on heat stress and hot environments and has updated the Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupational Exposure to Hot Environments [NIOSH 1986a]. This updated guidance includes information about physiological changes that result from heat stress, and relevant studies such as those on caffeine use, evidence to redefine heat stroke, and more. Book Health Effects of Low Radiation 2003

Download or read book Health Effects of Low Radiation 2003 written by and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This CD rom contains 28 papers presented to the BNES international conference on the health effects of low level ratiation. This conference is the fourth in the highly successful series and its aim is to present the fundamental radiobiological and dosimetric information relevant to understanding the current debate on the health effects of exposure to ionizing radiations at low doses and dose rates. It is also intended to provide a forum for discussion of the latest developments in this area and their relevance to the radiological protection of human health and the environment.
