Download or read book GI Joe Lillie written by Joseph S. Bonsall and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early morning hours of June 6, tens of thousands of boys from the shores of Maine, the rivers of Mississippi, and the lakes of Minnesota were taking a boat ride that would go down in history. With the ocean spray in their faces and hearts practically beating out of their chests, American G.I.s peers through the mist and saw the beaches of France. The Allied invasion of Hitlers Europe was on! A skinny kid from Philly checked his rifle for the umpteenth time and swallowed hard. A strip of beach codenamed Utah lay just ahead.... The 1944 D-Day landings preserved freedom all over the world and affected countless individual lives including G.I. Joe and his wife, Lillie. After the war, G.I. Joe and Lillie settled into a life that included two children. Old wounds, though, never quite let G.I. Joe leave France. Nightmares and crippling injuries left him with only one true friend, but she was all he'd ever need. Lillie embarked on a decades-long love affair, from the moment she saw that skinny boy from Philly in an army hospital. Five days of courtship and 55 years of marriage strengthened by faith saw to that. Lillie prayed daily for her husband and children in the difficult years ahead. Together, they made it all the way home. In Lillie's America, it was sacrifice that preserved cherished freedoms, and loyalty kept families united and strong. Lillie's steadfast faith and heartfelt devotion is a lesson for our time. This story of patriotism, bravery abroad and at home, and most of all, deep commitment, sets in a gold frame the very essence of America. The story of G.I. Joe and Lillie helps us all remember that true love never, ever dies.

Download or read book Sinner written by Sara Douglass and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2004-08-26 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sinner is the fourth book in Sara Douglass's The Wayfarer Redemption series, however it starts a brand new story arc and is the perfect place for new readers to enter this epic fantasy series. The land Tencendor has been united for more than forty years. The Starman Axis defeated the dreaded monster Gorgrael and by fulfilling his destiny he has brought peace finally to the three races of this land: the Icarii bird people, the Avar tree people, and the humans who for generations controlled (and oppressed) the other two races. Attaining god-like powers, Axis chose to retire to the ethereal sphere in the heavens with his beautiful consort Azhure and ceded his authority to his son Caelum SunSoar. As Supreme Ruler of Tencendor, Caelum holds the reins of power carefully and the thousands of years of ill-will between the three races seems to be at an end. All seems golden for this land. Or so it might seem. But the path of the son is not necessarily that of the father. Caelum is untried and has known nothing but peace during his lifetime. And while the three races appear at peace, there are undercurrents of jealousy and bitter memories just buried beneath the surface. So when strange powers threaten to come through the Star Gate (a source of power that gives those with magic their near immortality) bent on the destruction of all he holds dear, Caelum will have to find the strength to fight this threat. Complicating this situation is the almost impossible death of his Icarri sister...and the culprit appears to be none other then his hated brother Drago, who as a baby had been in league with Gorgrael and had sufficient power to try to kill Caelum. As punishment Drago was made mortal (unlike his near invulnerable siblings). As Caelum struggles to hold all he holds dear safe, he is left with this quandary: Is Drago as powerless as he seems? Is his hate for his fate enough to have him murder? And is he in league with the demons that hover ever nearer? Download or read book Death Becomes Her written by Elizabeth Dill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dead and dying women are surely an age-old narrative trope. While associations of femininity with death have become almost prototypical in literary criticism and are familiar fodder for cultural conversations, the editors of Death Becomes Her offer us an opportunity to investigate the values that underlie such associations. But from where does our tireless investment in what constitutes a feminine death, a feminine reaction to death, and death’s courting of women emerge? These essays give voice to the idea that power and victimization are not opposites, but rather are complements in an operatic fantasy of intrigue, agency, absence and presence that pervades American writing and experience. Each chapter of Death Becomes Her offers a different lens to investigate the nature of death as surely more than just an anatomical matter: The penny press obsessively covers the death of a beautiful prostitute in 1840s Chicago; a novel of seduction becomes also a narrative of autopsy; a story of haunting allows women outlets for sexual license and the polemics of desire. Overall this volume invites readers to explore the ways in which death is portrayed as both an ornamentation of femininity and an ontological reality of it: how, put simply, “death becomes her.” Essays include analyses of women’s deathbed scenes, suicides, murders, funerals, and autopsies in literature and other nineteenth-century media. As such, the chapters in Death Becomes Her show how the authorial and readerly interest in scripting and staging women’s deaths is both intricate and abiding. They tell us that death is never, of course, simply about death, and they make relevant other issues, from linguistics to politics, as they inform the literature and lives of women from the late-eighteenth to early twentieth-century America. Taken together, the pieces in Death Becomes Her allow us greater access to the surrounding culture out of which the American woman emerges, performs, lives and dies. In doing so, they offer fresh insight into the often unsettling and highly relevant role of death in feminism.

Book excerpt: I am The Purple Cinderella. I got my glass slipper back at the beautiful age of 38. What led me to that moment was a life full of heartache and pain. I found myself at the point of suicide. In that pivotal moment I got my glass slipper back (my life). I walked around dead inside for many years. My heart-wrenching childhood took me there. I was raped by my adult step brothers, some of my step uncles, some of my adult step cousins and other men. They all stole a part of Cinderella's glass slipper. I became used to this childhood torture, I accepted the torture, I even fell in love with the torture. Not only was I made to lie on my back and service the pedophiles, my sister and I were slave labor for my step family as well - forced to scrub and clean like Cinderella. Heartache and pain continued through my adulthood, bandages, crying inside. But at that pivotal moment of 38 GOD gave me life. Now I live.I got my glass slipper back!
