Book Manuscript Cultures Mapping the Field

Download or read book Manuscript Cultures Mapping the Field written by Jörg Quenzer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Script and writing were among the most important inventions in human history, and until the invention of printing, the handwritten book was the primary medium of literary and cultural transmission. Although the study of manuscripts is already quite advanced for many regions of the world, no unified discipline of ‘manuscript studies’ has yet evolved which is capable of treating handwritten books from East Asia, India and the Islamic world equally alongside the European manuscript tradition. This book, which aims to begin the interdisciplinary dialogue needed to arrive at a truly systematic and comparative approach to manuscript cultures worldwide, brings together papers by leading researchers concerned with material, philological and cultural aspects of different manuscript traditions.

Download or read book The Sanaa Palimpsest written by Asma Hilali and published by Qur'anic Studies. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a new annotated edition of the two layers of the 'Sanaa palimpsest', one of the oldest Qur'an manuscripts yet discovered, together with a critical introduction that offers new hypotheses concerning the transmission of the Qur'an during the first centuries of Islam. The palimpsest contains two superimposed Qur'anic texts within two layers of writing, on thirty-eight leaves of parchment collectively numbered MS 01-27.1 in the Dar al-Makhtutat (lit. 'the House of Manuscripts') in Sanaa, Yemen. The palimpsest's lower text, which has been dated to the first century of Islam (seventh century CE), was subsequently erased and the parchment was later reused for writing another Qur'anic text, which remains visible in natural light. This upper text is thought to date from the second century of Islam (eighth century CE). The two layers were imaged in 2007 by a French-Italian mission. Both Qur'anic texts are fragmented and present aspects of work in progress. In its lower layer, the manuscript offers the oldest witness of a reading instruction in a Qur'an text and perhaps even in any Arabic text. Such peculiarities offer rare evidence as to how the Qur'an was transmitted, taught and written down in the first centuries of Islam. In this book, Asma Hilali presents an annotated edition of the texts, together with a critical introduction. These contextualise the volume within the field of Qur'an manuscript studies, and engage with the historical and institutional contexts of transmission of the Qur'anic passages. The volume also makes systematic reference to previous studies and partial editions of the same manuscript.

This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging account traces the remarkable history of France's first giraffe, a diplomatic gift from Egyptian Pasha Muhammed-Ali to King Charles X in 1826. “Zarafa,” taken by boat from Egypt to Marseilles and walked all the way to Paris, was accompanied by her Arab handlers and a famous French naturalist. She drew vast crowds along her route, sparking a giraffomania that was widely documented in art and literature. Her initial journey and then long and celebrated residence in Paris encapsulates nineteenth-century French socio-political history and highlights the emerging evolutionary theories of the time. Book Mademoiselle Giraud

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adolphe Belot
  • Publisher : Mint Editions
  • Release : 2021-08-10

  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Mademoiselle Giraud written by Adolphe Belot and published by Mint Editions. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mademoiselle Giraud, My Wife (1870) is a novel by Adolphe Belot. Written at the height of his career as a popular playwright, the novel proved immensely popular and caused a stir with its depiction of homosexuality. Recognized today as an important work of French literature and in the history of sexuality, Mademoiselle Giraud, My Wife is a highly original, frequently funny, and ultimately tragic work of fiction from an underappreciated writer of nineteenth century France. Having forged a life of success and financial security for himself as a businessman, Adrien returns to Paris to find a wife. Singularly obsessed with tying his fate to a respectable woman, he finds himself struggling to remain realistic in his standards. Just when he thinks he will remain a bachelor for the rest of his days, Adrien meets the beautiful Paule Giraud, a friend of the influential Countess Berthe de Blangy. After a brief courtship, he marries Giraud only to find himself rejected in the bedroom. As he succumbs to jealousy and suspicion, Adrien becomes abusive and petulant, eventually leaving his wife in Paris for the city of Nice. There, he meets the Count de Blangy, who reveals to the unsuspecting husband the secret of his wife's sexual habits: for years, she has engaged in a lesbian affair with her friend Berthe. Enraged and dumbfounded, Adrien hatches a plan with the Count to separate their wives and punish them for their sexual deviancy. Tragic and scandalous, Mademoiselle Giraud, My Wife was a bestselling story of homosexuality told from the point of view of an author who clearly possessed his society's reprehensibly oppressive views on sex and gender. Regardless, Belot's novel remains an important landmark in the historical representation of homosexuality in literature. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Adolphe Belot's Mademoiselle Giraud, My Wife is a classic work of French literature reimagined for modern readers.
