Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award, poetry category What is it like living today in the chaos of a city that is at once brutal and beautiful, heir to immigrant ancestors "who supposed their children's children would be rich and free?" What is it to live in the chaos of a world driven by "intolerable, unquenchable human desire?" How do we cope with all the wars? In the midst of the dark matter and dark energy of the universe, do we know what train we're on? In this cornucopia of a book, Ostriker finds herself immersed in phenomena ranging from a first snowfall in New York City to the Tibetan diaspora, asking questions that have no reply, writing poems in which "the arrow may be blown off course by storm and returned by miracle."

Book Waiting for First Light

Download or read book Waiting for First Light written by Romeo Dallaire and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the RBC Taylor Prize: In this piercing memoir, Roméo Dallaire, retired general and former senator, the author of the bestsellers Shake Hands with the Devil andThey Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children, and one of the world's leading humanitarians, delves deep into his life since the Rwandan genocide. At the heart of Waiting for First Light is a no-holds-barred self-portrait of a top political and military figure whose nights are invaded by despair, but who at first light faces the day with the renewed desire to make a difference in the world. Roméo Dallaire, traumatized by witnessing genocide on an imponderable scale in Rwanda, reflects in these pages on the nature of PTSD and the impact of that deep wound on his life since 1994, and on how he motivates himself and others to humanitarian work despite his constant struggle. Though he had been a leader in peace and in war at all levels up to deputy commander of the Canadian Army, his PTSD led to his medical dismissal from the Canadian Forces in April 2000, a blow that almost killed him. But he crawled out of the hole he fell into after he had to take off the uniform, and he has been inspiring people to give their all to multiple missions ever since, from ending genocide to eradicating the use of child soldiers to revolutionizing officer training so that our soldiers can better deal with the muddy reality of modern conflict zones and to revolutionizing our thinking about the changing nature of conflict itself. His new book is as compelling and original an account of suffering and endurance as Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking and William Styron's Darkness Visible.

Book The Season of Light

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jay Cormier
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780814624685
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book The Season of Light written by Jay Cormier and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Season of Light is a guide for families, households, classrooms, communities, and parishes who wish to make the lighting of the Advent candles a daily prayer. For each day of the season, from the First Sunday of Advent until Christmas Day, The Season of Light offers a brief liturgy that is based on the structure of Vespers or Evening Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours: the lighting of the candles (the lucernarium"), a reading from the Advent Scriptures, petitions and collect, and a final blessing. The Advent wreath is one of the most enduring customs of the Christmas season. Rich in meaning, the four lights of the Advent wreath kindle "our blessed hope and manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ." (Titus 2:13). It is a symbol of our faith: that light and life will triumph over darkness and death, that our hope in God's providence and love will never leave us disappointed. With this rich tradition in mind, Jay Cormier has structured the daily liturgies in The Season of Light as follows: "The Lucernarium," the lighting of the candle(s); "The Word of God," in which a lector reads a Scripture passage that reflects the Advent themes of joyful expectation and the restoration of justice and peace in the dawning of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World; and "Prayers," in which the presider or leader offers petitions and all respond. Then the Lord's Prayer is recited, and the final collect and the blessing (including a scriptural blessing and a table blessing before meals) are offered by the presider. The structure and prayers in The Season of Light are offered as suggestions; adaptions are encouraged. For example, families may wish to make the intercessions an opportunity for spontaneous prayers offered by participants; groups with musical ability and leadership may want to incorporate hymns from the rich treasury of Advent and Christian hymnody; those who pray the Liturgy of the Hours regularly might consider including the Advent wreath custom with the psalms and prayers of the Hours. Designed for all those who wish to make the Advent wreath a daily prayer and part of their Christmas observance and tradition, The Season of Light helps Christians celebrate that we are an Advent people: a people who live in the eternal hope and expectation of the ever-burning light of Jesus Christ. Jay Cormier is the editor of Connections, a newsletter of ideas and resources for homilists. The Liturgical Press has also published his Lord, Hear Our Prayer: The Prayer of the Faithful for Sundays, Holy Days, and Ritual Masses and The Family Advent Wreath: Blessings and Prayers. "

Book excerpt: As he nears the end of a long and full life, Angus McDonald finds his mind ranging widely, bringing up some thoughts he would rather avoid. He is kept awake at night, tormented by the dark and violent history of the country he loves, South Africa. In recalling both his own life and those of his forbears he is reminded of instances of cruelty and inhumanity that Angus - a self-confessed "man of peace" - finds highly disturbing. Yet ultimately it is Angus' sense of wonder at the beauty of the world and at the processes that have helped shape it over unimaginable periods of time that comes to dominate his thinking. Through his career as a geographer he has been able to pursue his interests in geology, palaeo-anthropology, meteorology, biology and history?and he looks forward to being able to pursue them further in the life to come. Angus moves towards ?the light? feeling deeply grateful for his life. He finds himself saying simply ?Thank you, God.?

Book Come into the Light

Download or read book Come into the Light written by Tony Scully and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tony Scully’s poems in Come into the Light offer an outspoken conversation with the Gospels, arguably the most transformative teaching in our known history. The wisdom of the great masters among us, Jesus, the Buddha, and Mohammed, speak of universal compassion, love, and forgiveness. Jesus preaches that one will find God, not in invoking what amounts to an anthropomorphic idol, but in searching one’s own heart, as in his fundamental teaching, “the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21). Tony Scully’s poems address Jesus, the central figure of the Gospels, with questioning, irreverence, and occasional confrontation. In his view, many of the stories, even that of the resurrection itself, hinge on miracles, reflecting earlier religions that expected gods to cure illnesses, raise the dead, and even to walk on water, rather than on the powers of compassion, love, and forgiveness that characterize Jesus. In the author’s view, the heart of Jesus is proof enough of his transcendence.

He opened my eyes to understand from the scripture that I read. A powerful message came down from above and descended here on me. The grace of God bestowed on me the special gift that was given. It burns in my soul and lets the words flow on the paper it was written. May I thank him daily for what he has given to me. May my heart yearn to do his will, to use this gift he placed in me, to see the mighty hand of God, the creator of all things, who used a humble servant and made her a child of the king!
