Book excerpt: Grace and peace are in the salutation of all the letters written by the Apostle Paul in the New Testament. Grace and peace summarize the Christian life. Grace delivers us from a life of sin and death and trains us to live a new life of peace--shalom. Dark waters on the cover of GRACE & SHALOM represent the deep referred to in Genesis 1:2. "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." It was amid the deep that God created the heaven and earth separating the waters above the heaven from the water under the earth (Genesis 1:6-8). The Bible begins with creation out of darkness upon the face of the deep in Genesis 1:1 and ends with a new heaven and earth and no more sea in Revelation 21:1. From Genesis to Revelation, there is a continual battle of darkness trying to put out the light. And from Genesis through Revelation, we read about the Holy Spirit giving grace and shalom to save people from darkness. GRACE & SHALOM expounds upon grace and shalom available to those who answer God's call to come out of darkness into the marvelous light of Jesus Christ. And it is through grace and shalom that they are trained to walk in the light until they are in the new Jerusalem where the Lamb is the light and there is no more darkness (Revelation 21:23). Romans 5:1-5 is an outline of the Christian life from the time we come out of darkness until we are living on the new earth where there is no more darkness. It is also the outline of GRACE & SHALOM. Justification (vs. 1) begins when we accept God's grace, Jesus Christ, (John 3:16) by faith. Justification is completed when we are delivered by grace out of darkness into the light of the world, Jesus Christ (John 8:12). Peace (shalom) with God (vs. 1) is fellowship with Jesus Christ the light of the world. Rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God (vs.2) is living the first fruits of the light of the coming kingdom of God, righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). Not only do those who have peace with God rejoice in the hope of the glory of God but also in tribulation (vs.3). Rejoicing in tribulation is living a life of light in darkness empowered by the love of God poured into the heart of those who are justified by faith in Jesus Christ (vs. 5). Romans 5:1-5 explains the transformation of those who receive God's love in John 3:16 to save them out of the world and being given the same love of God (Romans 5:5) to love the same world they came out of as God loves it. Jesus called the transformation "born again" (John 3:3, 5) and "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14).In the Book of Acts, we read about the many attempts of darkness trying to overcome the Apostle Paul. God's grace and shalom were enough for him (2 Corinthians 12:9), and he wrote. "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:35, 37-39 NKJV).

Download or read book Rhythms of Grace written by Kerri Weems and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. These well-known words of wisdom remind us to pace ourselves in the journey of life so we reach the finish line with no regrets. Pacing yourself is not as easy as it sounds. Life tends to take on a pace of its own which when left unchecked, will drive us toward burnout and fatigue. We can easily become driven by care, worry, and ambition rather than led by the Holy Spirit. We may tend to think of burnout as a modern problem, but we can see that people in Jesus’ day felt their own kind of spiritual and emotional fatigue. Why else would Jesus have said these comforting words? Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly (Matt. 11:28-30; The Message). Even though he spoke these words more than two millennia ago, Jesus’ call to rest and peace seem tailor-made to fit this generation. Author Kerri Weems had let the pace and rhythm of her life get out of control. At first the consequences were only physical, but they quickly impacted her spiritual life. Since then, God has been teaching her to walk in time with him; he is teaching her to be led rather than driven. In this book, she opens up her life and shares this journey with the reader. God’s best for each of us is that we go the full distance of our race, and not just crawl exhausted across the finish line. God wants us to enjoy the race and cross the line with our heads held high, a smile on our faces, and our arms lifted in a double fist-punch! Getting to that moment is all about learning the rhythms of grace and pacing ourselves for the long run.

Book The Difficult Words of Jesus

Download or read book The Difficult Words of Jesus written by Amy-Jill Levine and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as telling parables and stories, giving teachings on how to discern questions of ethics and human nature, and offering beatitudes for comfort and encouragement, Jesus also spoke words and flung insults that followers then and now have found difficult, to say the least. He instructs disciples to hate members of their own families (Luke 14:26), warns that unending fire awaits some people, says body parts should be cut off if they offend. He calls a foreign woman a ‘dog’, the Jews ‘offspring of vipers’ and his closest disciple ‘Satan’. Preachers often gloss over these or avoid them altogether as they are still so shocking. In The Difficult Words of Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine sheds vital light on understanding these by exploring how these sayings sounded to those who first heard them. She reveals Jewish modes of expression, humour and the long tradition of Jewish insults and what they mean, and how we might interpret these sayings today within a gospel of love and reconciliation.

Book excerpt: Recent years have seen much controversy regarding a unified Christian doctrine of hell: Do we go to heaven or hell when we die? Or do we cease to exist? Are believers and unbelievers ultimately saved by grace in the end? By focusing on recent theological arguments, Four Views on Hell: Second Edition highlights why the church still needs to wrestle with the doctrine of hell. In the fair-minded and engaging Counterpoints format, four leading scholars introduce us to the current views on eternal judgment, with particular attention given to the new voices that have entered the debate. Contributors and views include: Denny Burk – representing a principle of Eternal Conscious Torment John Stackhouse – representing a principle of Annihilationism (Conditional Immortality) Robin Parry – representing a principle of Universalism (Ultimate Reconciliation) Jerry Walls – representing a principle of Purgatory Preston Sprinkle concludes the discussion by evaluating each view, noting significant points of exchange between the essayists. The interactive nature of the volume allows the reader to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of each view and come to an informed conclusion. BONUS CONTENT: Includes entire first edition of Four Views on Hell to help readers grasp the history of the discussion and how it has developed over the last twenty years.

Book How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian

Download or read book How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian written by John Dominic Crossan and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed Bible scholar and author of The Historical Jesus and God & Empire—“the greatest New Testament scholar of our generation” (John Shelby Spong) —grapples with Scripture’s two conflicting visions of Jesus and God, one of a loving God, and one of a vengeful God, and explains how Christians can better understand these passages in a way that enriches their faith. Many portions of the New Testament, introduce a compassionate Jesus who turns the other cheek, loves his enemies, and shows grace to all. But the Jesus we find in Revelation and some portions of the Gospels leads an army of angels bent on earthly destruction. Which is the true revelation of the Messiah—and how can both be in the same Bible? How to Read the Bible and Still be a Christian explores this question and offers guidance for the faithful conflicted over which version of the Lord to worship. John Dominic Crossan reconciles these contrasting views, revealing how different writers of the books of the Bible not only possessed different visions of God but also different purposes for writing. Often these books are explicitly competing against another, opposing vision of God from the Bible itself. Crossan explains how to navigate this debate and offers what he believes is the best central thread to what the Bible is all about. He challenges Christians to fully participate in this dialogue, thereby shaping their faith by reading deeply, reflectively, and in community with others who share their uncertainty. Only then, he advises, will Christians be able to read and understand the Bible without losing their faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if God wrote you a series of letters about the New Testament? In Letters to the Beloved, Jason Kanz walks through each of the New Testament's 27 books verse by verse as though God the Father were explaining them. Part paraphrase, part devotional, and part commentary, Letters to the Beloved is an imaginative approach to understanding the God of love and what it means to live a life of wholeness in Christ by the Spirit. Are you tired? Are you exhausted? Are you collapsing under the weight of the world you try to carry on your shoulders, diminished by the demands put upon you by yourself and others? Then come to me, and I will give you rest. Tie yourself to me, walk at my side, and learn how I live. I am gentle and humble. With me, you will find the rest your soul so desperately needs. Being yoked to me is the way to restoration, not more burden. -Matthew 11:28-30 Beloved, my love for the world is infinite. The creation of the universe was the product of my goodness. Sin's stain upon my beautiful design, and the way it has fragmented my image-bearers, breaks my heart. I would do anything to restore creation to its former magnificence and my image-bearers to wholeness. I sent my only Son, Jesus, as the perfect mediator between humankind and me because of my love. Anyone who puts their faith in him will never die but will have everlasting life with me. -John 3:16

Book Simply Good Morning and Shalom

Download or read book Simply Good Morning and Shalom written by Millie Baker and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tammy--Each day is a journey. Millie's morning devotions are so inspiring and encouraging to me. As her thoughts and experiences are applied to the Scripture--it gives me a new perspective for each day. Millie's words come so naturally, and I know it is her Love for the Lord. These devotions help me to stay focused on my journey with my life and my Love for the Lord. Jessica--I enjoy the morning thoughts. Millie began writing the morning thoughts when COVID began. In such uncertain times it was nice to have a devotional come through reminding us to stay connected to God. Everything--big or little--can be related to God and you can see God working in everything if you just take the time to look and listen to what message the Lord is sending to you and that's what the morning thoughts do for me. I always try to see God in everything and when Millie sends out our messages, it's another refreshing way to open my mind to how much the Lord loves us and cares for us. And as Millie shares them with us, we can send them to others and spread the loving message of the gospel in a way that others understand and enjoy as well. God Bless Jack--I would like to say that I like to read your little stories about when you and Mitzi go on your days walk. You talk about the weather, the people see, the flowers, workers along the way and how it reminds you of scripture sayings. I really do enjoy them. Thank you for sharing them. Bob and Joyce--We have been reading Millie's Devotionals for several years now and for us they are very uplifting. They seem to address all the things that are happening in our everyday lives. And out of the darkness of times, today they are a bright spot in our day. Jim and Melissa--We are amazed at how this sweet, kind soul has opened our eyes, through word, to God's presence- not only on a good day but difficult days as well. Rich and Lori--"Praise God for Miss Millie's devotion to Christ. These Holy Spirit. inspired writings with concise, detailed connections from everyday experiences help us realize that our God is in every moment. Such a blessing!" Pastor Jeannine--"I love these devotions because I can read and understand them easily; and I can relate so many of them to situations in my own life as well as others. I anticipate reading the next one and the next one. A daily blessing!" Kevin--Oh, how lucky I am. And a reminder of how humble I need to be. Daily inspirations with a lesson and guidance from the scriptures of our Lord. Walks with Millie and Mitzi...smiles abound! Everyday messages that speak to splendor of life, or a description of nature's creations, that are around us. A counsel for us to have empathy to hardships and sorrows that others may face. Pausing in my daily tasks--for in each message I may find comfort and some joy, a need to grin, or a need to pray for others, or even a reflection I find I need to take on myself. And how fortunate I am, receiving multiple blessings in each message, as I receive a thought in my own journey with the Lord and a daily walk with her--my mom!
