Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we look around, we see dark days and empty souls. Interestingly enough, when we look in the mirror, we often see the same thing: our busy days can feel futile, our attempts at worship can feel vain, and the end goal of heaven can seem like a distant mirage. These vain and futile "mirages" are exactly what they appear to be. Why? What else would we expect to see when we have our eyes set upon the ways of sinners? What else would we expect to feel when we gaze into the dark, cavernous depths of depraved men and women? Conversely, the mirror of the world can be an easy way to look good for most Christians when we see what everyone else is doing. The hard part is facing the darkness and void of our own souls, both before and after getting on our own cross. His Light and Fullness (In Darkness and Void) is a way to set our eyes where they belong: on the perfect Word of God. The Word of God is the light and fullness that illuminates our dark souls and fills our empty hearts. It is the pages of Holy Scripture, breathed out from the mouth of the Most High, that we get all light and all fullness. His Light and Fullness (In Darkness and Void) is a deep dive into more familiar and less familiar parables, miracles, apostolic anecdotes, and works of our God to invoke wonder, awe, and worship of our infinitely Holy God. From the Spirit of God hovering over the void of the deep in Genesis to the glory of God being the only source of light in the Revelation, this work is simply an exaltation of the majesty of His Light and Fullness within the pages of Scripture. Come be enlightened and filled.

Book A Ray of Light in a Sea of Dark Matter

Download or read book A Ray of Light in a Sea of Dark Matter written by Charles Keeton and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s in the dark? Countless generations have gazed up at the night sky and asked this question—the same question that cosmologists ask themselves as they study the universe. The answer turns out to be surprising and rich. The space between stars is filled with an exotic substance called “dark matter” that exerts gravity but does not emit, absorb, or reflect light. The space between galaxies is rife with “dark energy” that creates a sort of cosmic antigravity causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. Together, dark matter and dark energy account for 95 percent of the content of the universe. News reporters and science journalists routinely talk about these findings using terms that they assume we have a working knowledge of, but do you really understand how astronomers arrive at their findings or what it all means? Cosmologists face a conundrum: how can we study substances we cannot see, let alone manipulate? A powerful approach is to observe objects whose motion is influenced by gravity. Einstein predicted that gravity can act like a lens to bend light. Today we see hundreds of cases of this—instances where the gravity of a distant galaxy distorts our view of a more distant object, creating multiple images or spectacular arcs on the sky. Gravitational lensing is now a key part of the international quest to understand the invisible substance that surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the universe together. A Ray of Light in a Sea of Dark Matter offers readers a concise, accessible explanation of how astronomers probe dark matter. Readers quickly gain an understanding of what might be out there, how scientists arrive at their findings, and why this research is important to us. Engaging and insightful, Charles Keeton gives everyone an opportunity to be an active learner and listener in our ever-expanding universe. Watch a video with Charles Keeton: Watch video now. Book excerpt: God’s purpose for our lives is positioned inside the 365 days of the year He empowered us to experience. Remember, nothing just happens in our 365 days. The good, bad, and the ugly are all working together for our good, including why we are here and how our duties pertain to creation and the Creator. Still, we may sometimes wonder if there is a divine plan for humankind or if we just exist. In a spiritual guide shared to help believers build and nurture a strong relationship with Christ, Caren Ellison invites truth seekers on a journey with her as she explores God’s plan for humankind. She searches the scriptures for our purposes, and within each of the 365 days, illustrates how God’s plan has helped shape our lives. Throughout her guide that also shares her unique life experiences, Ellison gently reminds believers that we were created to live according to His purpose and plan, and we glorify His presence as our Lord and Savior when we walk in His purpose. The 365: God’s One-Year Plan utilizes scripture and a pastor’s life experiences to guide believers to understand and embrace God’s plan and purpose for them.

Download or read book The Dreaming Void written by Peter F. Hamilton and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2008-03-25 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewers exhaust superlatives when it comes to the science fiction of Peter F. Hamilton. His complex and engaging novels, which span thousands of years—and light-years—are as intellectually stimulating as they are emotionally fulfilling. Now, with The Dreaming Void, the first volume in a trilogy set in the same far-future as his acclaimed Commonwealth saga, Hamilton has created his most ambitious and gripping space epic yet. The year is 3589, fifteen hundred years after Commonwealth forces barely staved off human extinction in a war against the alien Prime. Now an even greater danger has surfaced: a threat to the existence of the universe itself. At the very heart of the galaxy is the Void, a self-contained microuniverse that cannot be breached, cannot be destroyed, and cannot be stopped as it steadily expands in all directions, consuming everything in its path: planets, stars, civilizations. The Void has existed for untold millions of years. Even the oldest and most technologically advanced of the galaxy’s sentient races, the Raiel, do not know its origin, its makers, or its purpose. But then Inigo, an astrophysicist studying the Void, begins dreaming of human beings who live within it. Inigo’s dreams reveal a world in which thoughts become actions and dreams become reality. Inside the Void, Inigo sees paradise. Thanks to the gaiafield, a neural entanglement wired into most humans, Inigo’s dreams are shared by hundreds of millions–and a religion, the Living Dream, is born, with Inigo as its prophet. But then he vanishes. Suddenly there is a new wave of dreams. Dreams broadcast by an unknown Second Dreamer serve as the inspiration for a massive Pilgrimage into the Void. But there is a chance that by attempting to enter the Void, the pilgrims will trigger a catastrophic expansion, an accelerated devourment phase that will swallow up thousands of worlds. And thus begins a desperate race to find Inigo and the mysterious Second Dreamer. Some seek to prevent the Pilgrimage; others to speed its progress–while within the Void, a supreme entity has turned its gaze, for the first time, outward. . . . BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Peter F. Hamilton's The Temporal Void.

Anders Prescott has developed a machine that he believes will allow this latest attempt to succeed where all others have failed, one that is designed to defend against the nightmarish creatures that call the darkness home. As this expedition prepares to set out, Luthan receives shocking new orders from the Church: that he is to join the expedition, and venture into the land beyond the reach of light. And though the inquisitor fears their journey suicidal, a voice in his dreams has been calling to him, drawing him to the abyssal darkness. Together they face the terrors of the Void as Prescott's machine is beset on all sides by monsters, and Luthan faces the possibility that the voice he hears in his dreams may be something far more sinister than it seems.

Download or read book The Black Sun written by Stanton Marlan and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2008-05-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also available in an open-access, full-text edition at http://oaktrust.library.tamu.edu/handle/1969.1/86080 The black sun, an ages-old image of the darkness in individual lives and in life itself, has not been treated hospitably in the modern world. Modern psychology has seen darkness primarily as a negative force, something to move through and beyond, but it actually has an intrinsic importance to the human psyche. In this book, Jungian analyst Stanton Marlan reexamines the paradoxical image of the black sun and the meaning of darkness in Western culture. In the image of the black sun, Marlan finds the hint of a darkness that shines. He draws upon his clinical experiences—and on a wide range of literature and art, including Goethe’s Faust, Dante’s Inferno, the black art of Rothko and Reinhardt—to explore the influence of light and shadow on the fundamental structures of modern thought as well as the contemporary practice of analysis. He shows that the black sun accompanies not only the most negative of psychic experiences but also the most sublime, resonating with the mystical experience of negative theology, the Kabbalah, the Buddhist notions of the void, and the black light of the Sufi Mystics. An important contribution to the understanding of alchemical psychology, this book draws on a postmodern sensibility to develop an original understanding of the black sun. It offers insight into modernity, the act of imagination, and the work of analysis in understanding depression, trauma, and transformation of the soul. Marlan’s original reflections help us to explore the unknown darkness conventionally called the Self.
