Book The Spectrum and Decays of Scalar Mesons in the Light Front Quark Model

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use the light-front quark model to investigate the structure of the scalar mesons, mainly focusing on the three heavy isoscalar states f0(1370), f0(1500), and f0(1710). We comput the spectrum of scalar mesons by diagonalizing a relativized, QCD-inspired model Hamiltonian written in a basis of 25 simple harmonic oscillator states. The masses are then used to perform a mixing analysis which assumes that the heavy isoscalars are mixtures of quarkonia and the scalar glueball. The resulting quark-glue content is used along with the meson wave functions determined from the spectrum to compute the decay rates to pairs of pseudoscalar mesons (two pions, two kaons, two eta mesons). We find that when the glueball contributions to the decays are ignored, the results are in poor agreement with the available data. However, when we estimate the effect of including the glueball contributions in the decays, a solution can be found that matches the data quite well. In this solution, the f0(1710) is mostly glueball (78%) while the f0(1500) and f0(1370) are mostly mixtures of quarkonia. Additionally, in this solution the glueball contributions to kaon and eta final states are significant, while the contributions to the pion final state is negligible. This finding is in agreement with Chanowitz who uses chiral perturbation theory to show that the amplitude for a scalar glueball to decay to a quark-antiquark pair is proportional to the quark mass. This results in a suppression of the pion decay channel compared to the kaon and eta decay channels.

Book Measurement of the Branching Fraction and CP Asymmetries in B Meson Decays Into Light Pseudo scalar Mesons

Download or read book Measurement of the Branching Fraction and CP Asymmetries in B Meson Decays Into Light Pseudo scalar Mesons written by Mark T. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, the charged-current couplings of the quark sector are described by the Cabibho-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements Vqq' . The consistency of multiple measurements of the sides and angles of the CKM Unitarity Triangle provides a stringent test of the SM, and also provides constraints on non-SM physics. The CKM angle alpha can be measured from the interference between B0 → pi + pi- decays with and without B 0 ↔ B¯0 mixing, in combination with the isospin related decays B+ → pi + pi- and B0 → pi 0 pi0. The B → Kpi system also exhibits interesting CP-violating features, including direct CP violation in B0 → K+pi- decays. Sum rules derived from U-spin symmetry and parameters from the B → pipi system relate the branching fraction and charge asymmetry of B +/- → K+/-pi 0 decays to other decays in the Kpi system. Based on a sample of 383 x 106 U (4S) → BB¯ decays, we report updated measurements of the branching fraction for B 0 → pi0pi0 and the time-integrated CP asymmetry, Cp0p0 . We also measure the branching fractions for B +/- → h+/-pi 0 (h+/- = pi+/- , K+/-) and the corresponding charge asymmetries Ah+/-p 0 . We find the branching ratios and asymmetries: B (B0 → pi0pi 0) = (1.47 +/- 0.25 +/- 0.12) x 10-6, B (B+/- → pi+/- pi0 = (5.02 +/- 0.46 +/- 0.29) x 10 -6, B (B+/- K +/-pi0) = (13.56 +/- 0.56 +/- 0.68) x 10-6, Cp0p0 = -0.49 +/- 0.35 +/- 0.04, Ap+/-p 0 = 0.03 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.01, and AK+/-p 0 = 0.030 +/- 0.039 +/- 0.010. Finally, we present bounds on the CKM angle alpha using isospin relations.

Book Study of B Meson Decays to Ppbarh Final States

Download or read book Study of B Meson Decays to Ppbarh Final States written by Tetiana B. Hryn'ova and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B mesons are unique among well-established non-quarkonium mesons in their ability to decay into baryons. Baryonic B decays offer a wide range of interesting areas of study: they can be used to test our theoretical understanding of rare decay processes involving baryons, search for direct CP violation and study low-energy QCD. This thesis presents measurements of branching fractions and a study of the decay dynamics of the charmless three-body decays of B meson into p{bar p}h final states, where h = {pi}{sup +}, K{sup +}, K{sub S}{sup 0}, K*{sup 0} or K*{sup +}. With a sample of 232 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} events collected with the BaBar detector, we report the first observation of the B {yields} p{bar p}K*{sup 0} decay, and provide improved measurements of branching fractions of the other modes. The distribution of the three final-state particles is of particular interest since it provides dynamical information on the possible presence of exotic intermediate states such as the hypothetical pentaquark states {Theta}*{sup ++} and {Theta}{sup +}in the m{sub pK{sup +}} and m{sub pK{sub S}{sup 0}} spectra, respectively, or glueball states (such as the tensor glueball f{sub J}(2220)) in the m{sub p{bar p}} spectrum. No evidence for exotic states is found and upper limits on the branching fractions are set. An enhancement at low p{bar p} mass is observed in all the B {yields} p{bar p}h modes, and its shape is compared between the decay modes and with the shape of the time-like proton form factor. A Dalitz plot asymmetry in B {yields} p{bar p}K{sup +} mode suggests dominance of the penguin amplitude in this decay and disfavors the possibility that the low mass p{bar p} enhancement originates from the presence of a resonance below threshold (such as the recently seen baryonium candidate at 1835 MeV/c{sup 2}). We also identify decays of the type B {yields} X{sub c{bar c}}h {yields} p{bar p}h, where h = K{sup +}, K{sub S}{sup 0}, K*{sup 0} or K*{sup +}, and X{sub c{bar c}} = {eta}{sub c} or J/{psi}. In particular, we report on the evidence of the B {yields} {eta}{sub c}K*{sup +} decay and provide a measurement of the width of {eta}{sub c}.

Book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon

Download or read book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon written by Fred Jegerlehner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g-2)/2 of the muon. The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations.
