Book excerpt: Agnes' plummet inside the Morris Island lighthouse became the stuff of local lore and ghost stories. But was her actual death driven by mental illness? Or, did the lighthouse keeper play a part? The teacher? This well-researched historical literary fiction illumines struggles meant to stay shrouded in a time when patience was a virtue, a lighthouse saved lives, and an earthquake was the furthest notion in the minds of those living in South Carolina's lowcountry.

Ever since Jake's become an outsider in his home town, carrying the guilt for a catastrophic event that devastated their local community. Six years later on the way back from college, Jake witnesses a satellite crash-landing and starts receiving garbled messages hinting at a conspiracy. But when he then begins to see something lurking in the shadows he even begins to question his sanity. Book excerpt: Damaged. Broken. Destroyed. I’ve heard it all. A single moment of trusting the wrong person shattered my life into pieces, and my family has never looked at me the same. It’s impossible to convince them that I’m anything more than the broken girl they rescued all those years ago. Until I meet him. Ramsey’s grumpy demeanor and menacing scowl scare most of the world away. But not me. Not when I’ve seen his gentle hands soothe an abused colt or comfort a terrified mare. And when I finally get up the courage to strike out on my own, Ramsey’s there. Roommates felt like such a safe proposition until Ramsey’s lingering touches and wicked smile light a fire in me I don’t think will ever be extinguished. And he feels it, too… But just as my new life begins to take root, an evil from my past emerges from the shadows, casting a darkness on my newfound freedom. And this time, they won’t settle for pieces of me. They want everything…

Book The Practical Use of Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book The Practical Use of Fracture Mechanics written by D. Broek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-07-31 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the use of fracture mechanics for the solution of practical problems; academic rigor is not at issue and dealt with only in as far as it improves insight and understanding; it often concerns secondary errors in engineering. Knowledge of (ignorance of) such basic input as loads and stresses in practical cases may cause errors far overshadowing those introduced by shortcomings of fracture mechanics and necessary approximations; this is amply demonstrated in the text. I have presented more than three dozen 40-hour courses on fracture mechanics and damage tolerance analysis, so that I have probably more experience in teaching the subject than anyone else. I learned more than the students, and became cognizant of difficulties and of the real concerns in applications. In particular I found, how a subject should be explained to appeal to the practicing engineer to demonstrate that his practical problem can indeed be solved with engineering methods. This experience is reflected in the presenta tions in this book. Sufficient background is provided for an understanding of the issues, but pragamatism prevails. Mathematics cannot be avoided, but they are presented in a way that appeals to insight and intuition, in lieu of formal derivations which would show but the mathematical skill of the writer.

Book Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture

Download or read book Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture written by K. E. Easterling and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture contains the proceedings of the Interdisciplinary Conference on the Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture held at the University of Luleå in Sweden on September 20-22, 1978. The papers explore the mechanisms underlying deformation and fracture of materials such as pearlite, metals, quartz, soils, and rocks. Results of theoretical and experimental studies on topics ranging from electromagnetic detection of low-cycle fatigue to stress and strain distribution in two-phase systems are presented. This book is comprised of 37 chapters and begins with a discussion on the interrelationships among solid mechanics, earth sciences, and material sciences. Subsequent chapters focus on the low-cycle behavior of case hardened steel; deformation and shear of normally consolidated flocculated kaolin; analytical modeling in inelasticity; creep mechanisms in clay; and initiation of crack growth at full plasticity. Plastic flow mechanisms and the rheological properties of the Earth's mantle are also examined, along with the fracture of glassy thermoplastics. The final chapter presents a thermodynamic model of consolidation in cohesive soils. This monograph will be a valuable resource for students and practitioners of mechanical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, and earth sciences.

Book The Correlation of Nondestructive Test Techniques with the Fracture Behavior of ATJ S Graphite

Download or read book The Correlation of Nondestructive Test Techniques with the Fracture Behavior of ATJ S Graphite written by W. L. Shelton and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected specimens of ATJ-S graphite were nondestructively evaluated and tensile tested in gas-bearing test facilities. The nondestructive test methods used on billets, specimen blanks, and finished specimens were visual inspection, alcohol wipe, radiography, and radiographic enhancement techniques. Correlations were made between nondestructive test indications and fracture location and strength. Low density areas were found to be the predominant weakening defect in this graphite. Fractographic examination of the fractured specimens revealed flaws which could be correlated with those flaws detected nondestructively and predicted from Griffith's theory. (Author).

Book Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics written by R.C. Bradt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes, 9 and 10, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics constitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the fracture mechanics of ceramic materials held at the Japan Fine Ceramics Center, Nagoya, Japan on July 15, 16, 17, 1991. These proceedings constitute the fifth pair of volumes of a continuing series of conferences. Volumes 1 and 2 were from the 1973 symposium, volumes 3 and 4 from a 1977 symposium, and volumes 5 and 6 from a 1981 symposium all of which were held at The Pennsylvania State University. Volumes 7 and 8 are from the 1985 symposium which was held at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The theme ofthis conference, as for the previous four, focused on the mechanical behavior ofceramic materials in terms of the characteristics ofcracks, particularly the roles which they assume in the fracture processes and mechanisms. The 82 contributed papers by over 150 authors and co-authors represent the current state of that field. They address many of the theoretical and practical problems ofinterest to those scientists and engineers concerned with brittle fracture.

Book Deformation and Fracture Behaviour of Polymer Materials

Download or read book Deformation and Fracture Behaviour of Polymer Materials written by Wolfgang Grellmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the most recent advances in the deformation and fracture behaviour of polymer material. It provides deeper insight into related morphology–property correlations of thermoplastics, elastomers and polymer resins. Each chapter of this book gives a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art methods of materials testing and diagnostics, tailored for plastic pipes, films and adhesive systems as well as elastomeric components and others. The investigation of deformation and fracture behaviour using the experimental methods of fracture mechanics has been the subject of intense research during the last decade. In a systematic manner, modern aspects of fracture mechanics in the industrial application of polymers for bridging basic research and industrial development are illustrated by multifarious examples of innovative materials usage. This book will be of value to scientists, engineers and in polymer materials science.
