Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light and Colour Theories and Their Relation to Light and Colour Standardization T may at first appear strange that colour, one of the most important indices of value in the Arts, Manufactures, and Natural Products, Should have no common nomenclature or reliable standard for reference, the reproduction of a given colour depending for exactitude on the memory of a sen sation; whereas this branch of science requires a physical means of recording a colour, with a power of recovery. It remains to be Shown that this power of record and recovery is possible, and depends only on the Observance of a few simple natural laws easy of application. The study of colour is carried on by two principal methods: the spectroscopic, where the colours are partially separated as a continuous band by a regular variation in their indices of refraction, the colours gradually merging into each other by overlapping in opposite directions; or by absorption, where a colour is developed by absorbing its complementary, and is isolated as a single or complex colour. This latter is nature's own method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It starts with ancient studies of Greek philosophers and their insights into light and mirrors, then reviews the theory of colors in the middle ages in Europe and Middle East. The last big part of the book explains the theories of colours by modern scientists and philosophers, starting with Isaac Newton and ending colour schemes of modern digital pictures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive text on the history of color theories since Halbertsma's book of 1947. Color is discussed in close connection with the evolution of ideas of light and vision. The book has chapters on the ancient Greek ideas of vision and color; on the contributions of Arabic science; on the Scientific Revolution from Kepler to Newton; on the early history of the three-color hypothesis; on the trichromatic theory and defective color vision; and on Goethe's, Schopenhauer's and Hering's theories. New understanding of the structure and functions of the retina and the brain finally results in the modern science of color vision. A History of Color has been written for ophthalmologists, optometrists and others who are interested in visual science and its history. The book requires no specialized knowledge.

Book The History of Vision Colour Light Theories

Download or read book The History of Vision Colour Light Theories written by Gábor Á Zemplén and published by Ktf-Writers-Studio. This book was released on 2005 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a standard history nor was it intended to be. On the one hand, several themes are chosen, and examined in detail. These include the nature of colour as expressed in a variety of phenomena, like colour mixing, the rainbow, and the prismatic spectrum. Spatial perception, as evidenced in the moon illusion and in vision following the restoration of sight, is also addressed. ... The particular strength of the book is the coverage of pre- and post-Newtonian theories of colour. ... Throughout this historical odyssey questions are posed for the reader to answer, hints are given regarding the likely resolution of them, and the texts provide the context in which they can be understood. The subtitle of the book, and Gabor Zemplen's stated intent, is that this should provide an introduction to "those who are interested in theories of light, colour, and vision." Its appeal will engage a much wider audience than the students to whom it is specifically directed. The texts selected provide ready access to materials that are often widely scattered, and pursuing the references in the bibliography will provide rich rewards.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Light IN undertaking the preparation of this fourth edition I felt, both on account of my respect for its late author and because the book has been so successful, that I ought to leave untouched, as far as possible, the main body of the text. Accordingly in this respect changes have only been made where such were necessary, in order to correct the few errors or inaccuracies which I have noticed, or to which I have seen attention directed occasionally in scientific papers. I have not considered it necessary to mark these alterations in any special way, but I gladly acknowledge here the assistance which such references have given me.
