Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indiana Home is a fascinating, highly readable account of life in rural Indiana in the mid-1800s. From the book's Foreword: In memory of Dr. Logan Esarey, late Professor of History at Indiana University, who devoted most of his life to the study, teaching and writing of Indiana history, these essays on Indiana life are published. In rough draft they were found among his very miscellaneous notes and papers. They were never intended for publication but merely as outlines from which he read to college and historical groups. Although prepared primarily for young folks-his students and grandchildren-they were enjoyed quite as much by those whose years provided memories of earlier days in Indiana. In the editing no important changes have been made in the informal language of the author-the homely language of the pioneer. Publication of this little volume was made possible through the interest of Mrs. Logan Esarey, the Indiana Historical Society, members of the Indiana Historical Society, col leagues, friends and former students. The dedication is as Dr. Esarey would have wished it.

Book The Jasonville I Remember

Download or read book The Jasonville I Remember written by George R. Stultz and published by . This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1930s were a difficult time in the United States. Directly following the stock market crash of 1929, which plunged our nation into economic downfall, the thirties are best known for the Great Depression. Nearly 15 million Americans were unemployed, and families all over the country were struggling-including the Stultz family in Jasonville, Indiana. But the Stultzes were no strangers to adversity and hard work, and life in this little coalmining town was not all hardship and grief. In The Jasonville I Remember-a collection of essays first published in the Jasonville Independent-George Stultz reflects on various topics concerning family, community, and growing up in rural Indiana. He takes us back to a time when life was challenging but filled with moments of pure joy. And these are the moments that he shares in this delightful and nostalgic look at life in the 1930s as seen through the eyes of an adventurous, fun-loving, and goodhearted boy. Whether you lived through the Great Depression or simply read about it in history books, you'll find these vignettes relatable to modern life as we celebrate family, friends, and the memories of our childhood that sustain us through our lives. George R. Stultz was born and reared in Jasonville, Indiana. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, serving his country in the Pacific Theater of World War II, he returned to Indiana. He graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and moved to Adams County, where he began a teaching career. After several years he changed direction and began an extensive and varied career in the juvenile/criminal justice field, with a master's degree in criminology. He retired in 1989 and has spent his post-retirement years reading, writing, gardening, and working with the Quaker Meeting assembly in Plainfield, Indiana.

Book Economic Development Performance Measures and Rural Economic Development in Indiana

Download or read book Economic Development Performance Measures and Rural Economic Development in Indiana written by Jennifer L. Sharkey and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important consideration when identifying and implementing transportation investments is the prospect of economic development. Government agencies are faced with the challenging task of efficiently allocating scarce resources in order to satisfy the physical needs of the state and its communities. The Indiana Department of Transportation has the difficult task of prioritizing projects involving urban and rural transportation investments while attempting to satisfy both local and state needs. Typically, urban settings provide the greatest opportunity for economic development, due to population density, public infrastructure, and ready markets. Consequently, rural areas may get left behind, becoming more isolated and unattractive from a business and even residential standpoint. Therefore a study is needed to identify the methodology that can accurately evaluate the economic impacts of a transportation investment, with emphasis on rural Indiana. A variety of performance measures could be used when evaluating a potential investment. This study has sought to identify and assess economic development performance measures to be used when evaluating transportation investments in rural Indiana.

Book A Home in the Woods

Download or read book A Home in the Woods written by Oliver Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's hard to picture this part of the country as I first remember it. Here and there was a cabin home with a little spot of clearin close by. The rest of the country was jist one great big woods and miles and miles in most every direction. From your cabin you could see no farther than the wall of trees surrounding the clearin; not another cabin in sight." Thus begins Oliver Johnson's account of pioneer life in the Indianapolis area in the 1820s and 1830s. Elsewhere, he says, "We lived mighty happy and contented in the early days. With a good snug cabin, a big fireplace, and a supply of corn meal on hand, there wasn't much to worry about. Our big family spent many a pleasant winter evenin settin around a blazin fire while the wind and snow cut capers outside." Each chapter is a story in itself: "The Endless Tress," "To Build a Cabin," "Clearing the Land," "The Fireplace," "The Spinning Wheel," "Ills and Aches," "The Three R's," "Early Grist Mills," "Hunting Tales," "Fights and Shooting Matches," "The First County Fairs," "Driving Hogs to the River," and "How I Met Your Grandmother."
