Book excerpt: As Leeza celebrates her forty-fifth birthday, there is no birthday cake, candles, gifts, or party with family and friends. It’s just her, alone in a prison cell probably for the rest of her life. She contemplates how her life has gone so completely off track, and she recalls how it all began for her as a little girl growing up in Eden Square in the projects. Leeza wishes she could go back to being the little girl with the bad grammar and the big dreams, but it’s much too late for that now. She faces a death sentence. A work of spiritual fiction, Little Miss Sanctified, by author Dr. Louis Timm’s, lets God’s people know they are not alone and that there is that dark side that exists in all. Through Leeza’s fictional story, Timm’s shows Christians that the hand of a loving and living God offers a right sense of worth and direction; God alone knows the end from the beginning. With each and every temptation, God will provide a way of escape only to those who truly want to escape the vices this world so lavishly offers.

Marty has always been an outcast, shunned by his fellow sea creatures for his differences. Meanwhile, Harry, falsely accused of theft, finds himself isolated in a small fishing village after losing his career. Despite their vastly different worlds, fate brings them together on an unforgettable journey of self-discovery, friendship, and redemption. With danger lurking in the deep and challenges on both land and sea, Marty and Harry’s courage and creativity are put to the test. They confront predators, solve age-old problems, and participate in the legendary Sea Town Trials. With the help of Harry’s ingenious invention, the Fintastic Gadget, Marty competes—and wins—against the fiercest creatures of the ocean. After their victory, Marty and Harry open the Sea Town Academy, a sanctuary for sea creatures with unique challenges. From missing tentacles to stage fright, the Academy becomes a beacon of hope for those who are different. Using Harry’s innovative gadgets and Marty’s indomitable spirit, they empower others to embrace their differences and turn their greatest challenges into their greatest strengths. While perfect for middle-grade readers (ages 8-12), Swim also offers universal themes of resilience and friendship that older readers, including adults, will enjoy.

Book The Sober Lush

  • Author : Amanda Eyre Ward
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2020-06-02
  • ISBN : 0593084829
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book The Sober Lush written by Amanda Eyre Ward and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sober hedonist's guide to living a decadent, wild, and soulful life--alcohol-free. In a culture where sipping "rosé all day" is seen as the epitome of relaxation, "grabbing a drink" the only way to network; and meeting at a bar the quintessential "first date," many of us are left wondering if drinking alcohol really is the only way to cultivate joy and connection in life. Jardine Libaire and Amanda Eyre Ward wanted to live spontaneous and luxurious lives, to escape the ordinary and enjoy the intoxicating. Their drinking, however, had started to numb them to the present moment instead of unlocking it. Ward was introduced to Libaire when she first got sober. As they became friends, the two women talked about how they yearned to create lives that were Technicolor, beautifully raw, connected, blissed out, and outside the lines . . . but how? In The Sober Lush, Libaire and Ward provide a road map for living a lush and sensual life without booze. This book offers ideas and instruction for such nonalcoholic joys as: • The allure of "the Vanish," in which one disappears early from the party without saying goodbye to a soul, to amble home under the stars • The art of creating zero-proof cocktails for all seasons • Having a fantastic first date while completely sober • A primer on setting up your own backyard beehive, and honey tastings For anyone curious about lowering their alcohol consumption or quitting drinking altogether, or anyone established in sobriety who wants inspiration, this shimmering and sumptuous book will show you how to keep indulging in life even if you stop indulging in alcohol.

Book excerpt: I was born in 1977, and had led a normal childhood up until May of 1982. My being involved in a bicycle accident that had left me paralyzed on the right side of my body. I too had attained a Traumatic Brain Injury in which I had lost 1/3 of my brain. I had lost the ability to walk and talk, and in truth all other things. It took years of physical therapy, speech therapy and still to this day I go to physical therapy to do strength training. From 1982 to present day I have always walked with a limp, but truthfully haven’t allowed my disability to stop me from living my life. While I attended college at Davis and Elkins, in Elkins, West Virginia I swam quite a bit, and played basketball for the school for 2 years. After college I returned home, and held several jobs around my home town of Herndon Virginia. I am currently employed as a Special Education Assistant very close to where I live with my wife Maureen, and my son Christopher. Determination, patience, and the willingness needed to at least try something new have always streamed through my veins. I hope to encourage other likeminded people to do the same, and often time have shown them what has best worked for me. I think it is everyone’s responsibility to share their gifts, poetry is one of mine that I have done for 26 years.

Book Athletes Breaking Bad

Download or read book Athletes Breaking Bad written by John C. Lamothe and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-06-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At their basic level, sporting events are about numbers: wins and losses, percentages and points, shots and saves, clocks and countdowns. However, sports narratives quickly leave the realm of statistics. The stories we tell and retell, sometimes for decades, make sports dramatic and compelling. Just like any great drama, sports imply conflict, not just battles on the field of play, but clashes of personalities, goals, and strategies. In telling these stories, we create heroes, but we also create villains. This book is about the latter, those players who transgress norms and expectations and who we label the "bad boys" of sports. Using a variety of approaches, these 13 new essays examine the cultural, social, and rhetorical implications of sports villainy. Each chapter focuses on a different athlete and sport, questioning issues such as how notorious sports figures are defined to be "bad" within particular sports and within the larger culture, the role media play in creating antiheroes, fan reactions when players cross boundaries, and how those boundaries shift depending on the athlete's gender, sexuality, and race.
