Book Handbook of the Life Course

Download or read book Handbook of the Life Course written by Michael J. Shanahan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the success of the 2003 Handbook of the Life Course, this second volume identifies future directions for life course research and policy. The introductory essay and the chapters that make up the five sections of this book, show consensus on strategic “next steps” in life course studies. These next steps are explored in detail in each section: Section I, on life course theory, provides fresh perspectives on well-established topics, including cohorts, life stages, and legal and regulatory contexts. It challenges life course scholars to move beyond common individualistic paradigms. Section II highlights changes in major institutional and organizational contexts of the life course. It draws on conceptual advances and recent empirical findings to identify promising avenues for research that illuminate the interplay between structure and agency. It examines trends in family, school, and workplace, as well as contexts that deserve heightened attention, including the military, the criminal justice system, and natural and man-made disaster. The remaining three sections consider advances and suggest strategic opportunities in the study of health and development throughout the life course. They explore methodological innovations, including qualitative and three-generational longitudinal research designs, causal analysis, growth curves, and the study of place. Finally, they show ways to build bridges between life course research and public policy.

Book Young Scholars Developments in Philology

Download or read book Young Scholars Developments in Philology written by Yulia Lobina and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture as a way of bringing meaning into life is maintained through discourse. In search of factors influencing discourse effectiveness, this volume brings together young scholars from Russia, France, Pakistan, Slovakia and Lebanon to focus on variation as an essential feature of meaning producing communication, in its multiple aspects and settings. The book is based on papers presented during online sessions on cross-cultural discourse, literary analysis and language education of the 7th International Young Researchers Conference “Studying and Teaching Philology” held in Ulyanovsk, Russia, in 2017. In Part I, Irina Zhuchkova explores variation in academic discourse on discourse. In the first two chapters of Part II Hibah Shabkhez discusses the interaction of various culture codes and transformations of a literary character travelling from one fictional world into another, and, in the next chapter, Hibah Shabkhez, Ibreez Shabkhez and Azka Mahboob analyse the divergence of stances taken on the same character by its creator and the readers. In the final chapters of this section, Ibreez Shabkhez and Maksim Duleba uncover mechanisms of expressing conflicting stances, with the result of marginalising discourse participants, including the stance-taker himself. Roksolana Povoroznyuk in Part III examines the interpreter’s choices in mediating cross-cultural literary discourse, concentrating on paratranslational techniques and terminological variation, both of which involve a lot of translatorial freedom and responsibility. Finally, Part IV by Christelle Frangieh Fenianos addresses the issue of the second language learner’s freedom in choosing the ways of acquiring vocabulary, which serves as a gate to the world of cross-cultural communication. This book will be of interest to researchers, postgraduate students and advanced undergraduates working in the fields of philology, discourse analysis, literature and translation studies, and language acquisition.

Book Abortion and the Christian Tradition

Download or read book Abortion and the Christian Tradition written by Margaret D. Kamitsuka and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abortion remains the most contested political issue in American life. Poll results have remained surprisingly constant over the years, with roughly equal numbers supporting and opposing it. A common perception is that abortion is contrary to Christian teaching and values. While some have challenged that perception, few have attempted a comprehensive critique and constructive counterargument on Christian ethical and theological grounds.Margaret Kamitsuka begins with a careful examination of the churchs biblical and historical record, refuting the assumption that Christianity has always condemned abortion or that it considered personhood as beginning at the moment of conception. She then offers carefully crafted ethical arguments about the pregnant womans authority to make reproductive decisions and builds a theological rationale for seeing abortion as something other than a sin.

Book The Spiritual Soul

  • Author : Matthew J. Churchouse
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

Download or read book The Spiritual Soul written by Matthew J. Churchouse and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the human soul? What does it do? How does it relate to the brain and body? What is happening in the soul when a person encounters the Holy Spirit? These are some of the questions addressed in The Spiritual Soul as it advances towards its overall goal of proposing a (re)new(ed) Pentecostal/Charismatic understanding of what constitutes a human being. In pursuing this overarching intention, Churchouse responds to the anthropology of two leading Pentecostal scholars, Amos Yong and Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen—specifically their theological models concerning what a human is constituted / essentially “made up” of—to offer an enhanced Pentecostal model in preference to their monistic view. Drawing upon the sources of biblical studies, the philosophy of mind, and upon the pneumatology that flows from Pentecostal spirituality, Churchouse advances a renewed understanding of the human soul—one illumined by the spirit and the Spirit—to engender his distinctive Pentecostal model of human constitution.

  • Author : Charles H. Cosgrove
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2004-09-01
  • ISBN : 056706896X

Download or read book The Meanings We Choose written by Charles H. Cosgrove and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Meanings We Choose is an engagement with responsible bible reading-Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and New Testament texts-for the past as well as for the present and future. Its stated perspectives are multi-denominational Christian but the implications of such readings go far beyond a specific confessional framework. In the present political climate the aware, responsible "personal" is meaningful for any community, confessedly religious as well as otherwise. While the articles collected in this volume, broadly speaking, can and perhaps should be compartmentalized as ideological criticism, their significance for reading ideologies "different" from their own is more than considerable.
