Download or read book Life of Victor Emmanuel II written by G. S. Godkin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Victor Emmanuel II: First King of Italy Many Memoirs have been written of Victor Emmanuel since his death, but none of them would answer for the purpose of translating into our language. The best work on the subject is one lately issued from the press, entitled 'La Vita ed il Regno di Vittorio Emanuele, ' by Signor Massari, and to it I am much indebted in the composition of this work. It is full of reliable information, and ably written; but too comprehensive and diffuse for English readers, who cannot be supposed to take the same interest in all the particulars of contemporary events in Italy as the natives of the country. Ghiron's brief Memoir is charming as far as it goes, but it does not pretend to be a regular biography. And the author is a true hero-worshipper; he is on his knees at the opening sentence, and never rises from that reverential attitude to the close of the book. But it is hardly reasonable to expect at the present moment an impartial work on the subject from an Italian, any more than it would be to look for an impartial biography from a son of a loved father whom he had just laid in the grave. Download or read book Cultural Sociology of Cultural Representations written by Christopher Thorpe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2025-01-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a historical cultural sociological analysis of cultural representations of Italy in England and later Britain, from the period of the Italian Renaissance to the present day. Rooted in a critical account of orthodox social scientific approaches to thinking and theorising cultural representation, the study combines analytical frames and conceptual apparatus from Bourdieu’s Field theory and Yale School cultural sociology. Drawing from a wide range of empirical data and studies, the book demonstrates the significance of representations of the Italian peninsula and its people for exploring a range of cultural sociological phenomena, from the ‘classing’ and ‘commodification’ of Italy to the role of Italian symbolism for negotiating cultural trauma, identify formation, and expressions of cultural edification, veneration, and emulation. As such, it will be of interest to scholars of (cultural) sociology, history, anthropology, Italian studies as well as scholars in international studies interested in intercultural exchange and representations of other nations, national cultures, and otherness.
Download or read book Mark Twain s Literary Resources written by Alan Gribben and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 1124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Alan Gribben, a foremost Twain scholar, made waves in 1980 with the publication of Mark Twain's Library, a study that exposed for the first time the breadth of Twain's reading and influences. Prior to Gribben's work, much of Twain's reading history was assumed lost, but through dogged searching Gribben was able to source much of Twain's library. Mark Twain's Literary Resources is a much-expanded examination of Twain's library and readings. Volume I included Gribben's reflections on the work involved in cataloging Twain's reading and analysis of Twain's influences and opinions. This volume, long awaited, is an in-depth and comprehensive accounting of Twain's literary history. Each work read or owned by Twain is listed, along with information pertaining to editions, locations, and more. Gribben also includes scholarly annotations that explain the significance of many works, making this volume of Mark Twain's Literary Resources one of the most important additions to our understanding of America's greatest author.
Download or read book Djuna Barnes s Nightwood written by Bonnie Roos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranging over depression-era politics, the failures of the League of Nations, popular journalism and the Modernist culture exemplified by such writers as James Joyce and T.S. Eliot, this is a comprehensive exploration of the historical contexts of Djuna Barnes's masterpiece, Nightwood. In Djuna Barnes's Nightwood: 'The World' and the Politics of Peace, Bonnie Roos reads Barnes's novel against the backdrop of Herbert Bayard Swope's popular New York newspaper The World to demonstrate the ways in which the novel wrestles with such contemporaneous issues as the Great Depression and its political fallout, the failures of the League of Nations and the collapse of peace between the two World Wars. Roos argues that Nightwood allegorizes the role of liberal newspapers - epitomised by the sensationalism of The World - in driving a US policy that hastened the arrival of war.
