Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of the Rev. John Milne of Perth It is not a eulogy that i wish to write, but a record. I should like to show the man, not to execute a piece of sculpture. In doing this, it will be needful to introduce 'companions in labour, ' - from him who died first, Robert M'Cheyne, to him who went last, William Burns; with others still serving here below. Some names may have been left out; but it was found impossible to make mention of all. The religious history of the last forty years in Scotland remains to be written. Biographies, like the present, are contributions to this. I fear I may not have been quite accurate chronologically at times; but the narrative is not at all affected by this. As very few of Mr. Milne's letters are fully dated, I was occasionally at a loss in regard to order and time. Several things have been thrown in purposely out of order, because needing to be grouped, for the illustration of some particular feature of character. Book Life of Lloyd Jones

Download or read book Life of Lloyd Jones written by Iain H. Murray and published by . This book was released on 1990-06-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Martyn Lloyd-Jones, physician, preacher and Christian Leader, died in 1981, after more then 40 years in London, few knew the remarkable story of his formative earlier years which, in the authorised biography, is now told for the first time. From his rural Welsh background to St Bartholomew's Hospital (where at the age of 23 he was Chief Clinical Assistant to Sir Thomas Horder, the King's Physician), then, suddenly at 27, to a struggling Calvinistic Methodist Church in Aberavon, South Wales, he appears successively as schoolboy, dairyman's assistant, political enthusiast, debater, doctor, and finally Christian preacher. Some regarded his change of career as romantic, others as foolish. The one thing of which Dr Lloyd-Jones was sure was that his settlement amid the industrial depression of South Wales was no sacrifice: 'I gave up nothing. I received everything. I count it the highest honour God can confer on any man to call to be herald of the gospel'.

Book excerpt: In the year 937, the new king of England, a grandson of Alfred the Great, readies himself to go to war in the north. His dream of a united kingdom of all England will stand or fall on one field—on the passage of a single day. At his side is the priest Dunstan of Glastonbury, full of ambition and wit (perhaps enough to damn his soul). His talents will take him from the villages of Wessex to the royal court, to the hills of Rome—from exile to exaltation. Through Dunstan’s vision, by his guiding hand, England will either come together as one great country or fall back into anarchy and misrule . . . From one of our finest historical writers, The Abbott’s Tale is an intimate portrait of a priest and performer, a visionary, a traitor and confessor to kings—the man who can change the fate of England.
