Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title, Anything of Which a Woman is Capable, comes from Father Jean Pierre Médaille, the Jesuit who brought together the first Sisters of St. Joseph in the mid-seventeenth century. Since 1650, congregations of St. Joseph have grown in Europe, the Americas, India and the Orient, all attracting women who are called to do anything of which they are capable to serve their dear neighbor. This volume tells stories of the foundations of congregations in France and then, beginning in 1836, in the United States. It introduces the reader to intrepid women whose willingness to serve knew no boundaries and whose strong personalities provided an ample match for Church leaders who either encouraged or tried to control their zeal. The copious footnotes make this a valuable addition to the history of Catholic women religious in the United States as well as to the history of Catholicism.

This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Accessible Introduction to Gregory of Nazianzus Brian Matz, a respected scholar of the history of Christianity, provides an accessible and erudite introduction to the thought of fourth-century church father Gregory of Nazianzus. Matz explores Gregory's homilies, especially those that reveal Gregory's affirmation of the full deity of the Holy Spirit, and shows the importance of Gregory's work for contemporary theology and spirituality. This work demonstrates a patristic approach to reading the Bible and promotes a vision for the Christian life that is theological, pastoral, and philosophical. Gregory of Nazianzus is the fourth book in a series on the church fathers edited by Hans Boersma and Matthew Levering.

Download or read book School Handbooks written by Mary Angela Shaughnessy and published by National Catholic Education Assn. This book was released on 2002 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School handbooks contain the policies and procedures for which school community members are responsible. Developing and writing them, however, is a formidable task for any Catholic school administrator in this era of legal and moral accountability to entities ranging from state educational authorities to diocesan officials to pastors in parish schools. Yet, they are instruments that aid all members of the school community in the realization of the school's mission and ministry. This booklet provides an introduction to the laws affecting the administration of Catholic schools and offers specific guidance concerning the contents and wording of faculty, parent/student, and board handbooks. Six chapters include: (1) "Catholic Education and Civil Law"; (2) "Negligence"; (3)"Principles of Handbook Preparation"; (4) "Faculty Handbooks"; (5) "Parent/Student Handbooks"; and (6) "Board Handbooks." Although administrators may be discouraged when confronted with the writing of handbooks in addition to the already demanding tasks of school administration, well-written, legally sound handbooks can do much to ensure the smooth operation of Catholic schools. The booklet concludes with a glossary and bibliography. (Contains 22 references.) (RT)

Download or read book So Many Christians So Few Lions written by George Yancey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So Many Christians, So Few Lions is a provocative look at anti-Christian sentiments in America. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative research, authors George Yancey and David A. Williamson show that even though (or perhaps because) Christianity is the dominant religion in the United States, bias against Christians also exists—particularly against conservative Christians—and that this bias is worth understanding. The book does not attempt to show the prevalence of anti-Christian sentiments—called Christianophobia—but rather to document it, to dig into where and how it exists, to explore who harbors these attitudes, and to examine how this bias plays itself out in everyday life. Excerpts from the authors’ interviews highlight the fear and hatred that some people harbor towards Christians, especially the Christian right, and the ways these people exhibit elements of bigotry, prejudice, and dehumanization. The authors argue that understanding anti-Christian bias is important for understanding some social dynamics in America, and they offer practical suggestions to help reduce religious intolerance of all kinds.

Mother Saint Joseph, Foundress of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Bordeaux I at Once refused her request; but the good Mo ther insisted so urgently on my compliance that I was fdrced to yield to her wish. I made all possible preparation, not, however, without much uneasiness as to the consequences. At the open ing of the retreat, after my first sermon, which was listened to with great attention, I returned to my room well satisfied with my success. In a few moments the Mother followed me, and, without any ceremony, said Father, if you con tinne the retreat in this style, all the fruit is lost. Put aside your flowery sermons; we are not lite rati, but simple religious, assembled to occupy our minds with the affairs Of our salvation. It is necessary only to set before us pious truths which 'will raise our hearts to God, remind us of our duties, know our defects, and correct them.
