Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Grish Chunder Ghose: The Founder and First Editor of "the Hindoo Patriot" And "the Bengalee" We had originally intended to place before the Public along with this Memoir some specimens of the writings of Grish Chunder Ghose. But the unexpected length of time taken by the printer in passing these pages through the press having caused a great deal of disappointment to some revered friends who personally knew and admired the subject of this Memoir and are therefore naturally anxious to see the work in print in their lifetime, we have been obliged to give up our original plan and to publish this work by itself. The specimens of writings collected by us have in the meanwhile accumulated to such an extent that they arc expected to cover some six or eight hundred pages, the printing of which may take up a couple of years. We hope, however, to expedite the work and to present the public with a goodly volume of selected writings in the course of next year. We trust the present work will be received by the Public with such favour as may warm us to our self-imposed labour of love About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Recovering Liberties

Download or read book Recovering Liberties written by C. A. Bayly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the world's leading historians examines the great Indian liberal tradition, stretching from Rammohan Roy in the 1820s, through Dadabhai Naoroji in the 1880s to G. K. Gokhale in the 1900s. This powerful new study shows how the ideas of constitutional, and later 'communitarian' liberals influenced, but were also rejected by their opponents and successors, including Nehru, Gandhi, Indian socialists, radical democrats and proponents of Hindu nationalism. Equally, Recovering Liberties contributes to the rapidly developing field of global intellectual history, demonstrating that the ideas we associate with major Western thinkers – Mills, Comte, Spencer and Marx – were received and transformed by Indian intellectuals in the light of their own traditions to demand justice, racial equality and political representation. In doing so, Christopher Bayly throws fresh light on the nature and limitations of European political thought and re-examines the origins of Indian democracy.

Book The Life of Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay

Download or read book The Life of Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay written by Narasingha Prosad Sil and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay has been the most popular writer of novels and short stories in his native Bengaland in India at large. Despite this, he remains unrecognized in the English speaking world. Narasingha P. Sil fills this void by presenting a historical critical assessment of his upbringing and the experiences that influenced his masterful and magnificent work. The Life of Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay rescues the authentic man, a caste-conscious and patriarchal Brahmin of colonial Bengal, from the cuckoo land of gratuitous praise and panegyric showered on the Aparajeya Kathasilpi, the "invincible" wordsmith. The author exposes Sharatchandra's innate conservative worldview and his romantic platonic concept of human sexuality that inform all his love stories. In many respects Sharatchandra resembles his formidable European forbear, Jean Jacques Rousseau of Enlightenment France. The concluding chapter of Sil's biographical study introduces this pioneering comparison between the two men--a veritable tour de force.

Book History Historians and Development Policy

Download or read book History Historians and Development Policy written by C.A. Bayly and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. If history matters for understanding key development outcomes then surely historians should be active contributors to the debates informing these understandings. This volume integrates, for the first time, contributions from ten leading historians and seven policy advisors around the central development issues of social protection, public health, public education and natural resource management. How did certain ideas, and not others, gain traction in shaping particular policy responses? How did the content and effectiveness of these responses vary across different countries, and indeed within them? Achieving this is not merely a matter of seeking to 'know more' about specific times, places and issues, but recognising the distinctive ways in which historians rigorously assemble, analyse and interpret diverse forms of evidence. This book will appeal to students and scholars in development studies, history, international relations, politics and geography as well as policy makers and those working for or studying NGOs.
