Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Daniel Webster It would have been possible, perhaps, in the composition of the first volume, which narrates the life of the great statesman, to fol low his career more minutely, step by step, and year by year, if not day by day, at least from the time when his career became con useted with the history of his country but this sort of biography, so common when books were scarce, and when amusement rather than instruction was the object sought after by the reader, meets not the temper of an age, which, active and busy to excess, has no time to waste on needless particulars, but hastens over tiresome de tails to seize upon the great facts involving and demonstrating character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Memorials of Daniel Webster, Vol. 2 There were then no books of practice and forms in the office, like Tidd's and Graham's, and a host of others, written since then. This was long before Kent had written his Commentaries. There was nothing visible to him. He has told me if Mr. Thompson had shown him at the outset, or had placed in his hands one of each kind of the writs issued in a suit, together with one of each kind of the papers, from the beginning to the end - for in stance, a Declaration, a Demurrer, a Plea, a Record, and a Judgment Roll - so that he could have had ocular demonstration of what each contained, and could have read it, and turned it over, and looked at it inside and out, he would have saved himself much labor, and his path would have been illuminated be yond what many persons would, perhaps, readily admit. He said he would earnestly recommend that every teacher of law students Should do what Mr. Thompson omitted to do, when he began to study law; that is, first to Show them the documents about which they are to read. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourse on the Life and Character of Daniel Webster Without attempting a formal eulogy on Mr. Webster, which would be in the highest degree presumptuous, I must here record my sense of the invaluable services he has rendered to our common country and our common Christianity, and so endeavour to turn the emotions of sorrow which fill our hearts, to some use ful account. If I can do nothing more, I must be al lowed to cast a single flower, however transitory, upon his grave. Book Daniel Webster Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daniel Webster IF Daniel Webster had had the good fortune to die on March 6, 1850, the story of his career would have been the despair of biographers. To tell the truth, and at the same time to avoid a lapse into the horrors of grandiloquence, would have been one of the supreme tests of literary skill. But Nature has an unbroken custom of inserting the compensation balance into her work; and thus, in the case of Webster, it came about that he was unkindly kept alive a little too long, whereby he encountered the occasion of the seventh of March, 1850, and made upon that day a speech which is perhaps the most famous in our history, and also surely the most unfortunate. The order of subse quent events shows plainly that there was no rea son for this too long survival upon his part. For his great work had already been done; and neither that speech, nor anything which he did afterward in the brief remainder of his life, much afiected the course of events in the country. It was cruel that the end, which was so near at hand, should yet have sufiered this little postponement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Daniel Webster: The Statesman and the Patriot, Containing Numerous Anecdotes This Life of Daniel Webster is written for the young; and for that reason, as is elsewhere said, the events of his boyhood and college-days are dwelt upon with more minuteness than those of his after life. For a man occupying the high place which he held in the eye of the nation, his private charac ter was little known. He had not the winning address which draws the great multitude. People did not call him by the familiar terms with which popular idols are designated. He was not covet ous of parade and personal attentions. He never courted the fashion, or appealed to the prejudice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy on the Life and Character of the Late Daniel Webster There is nothing more interesting or instructive than the lives of men who have played important and distinguished parts in the drama of nations. The lives of such, when they have been wise and virtuous - their aims high and noble, afford examples which challenge the approval of all, while they excite the emu lation of, at least, a few. Such examples are the moral salt of the world. They give to it a wholesome and purifying savor, that preserves it from the decay and corruption into which it would otherwise more speed ily fall. W'hilst such men live, their wisdom is a light shining out amidst the darkness of ignorance, prejudice and error, show ing the way that leads to happiness, prosperity and safety; and when they die, their example survives to stimulate posterity to walk in their paths.
