Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Leslie Stephen Leslie Stephen left behind him many and good friends. Sixty at least of them have helped me in the making of this book. Some have supplied information, some have lent letters, some have written sentences or paragraphs which with due acknowledgment will appear hereafter. I hope and believe that I have thanked all of them severally and in private for their kindness and courtesy. If now in thanking them jointly and in public I do not name them, that is partly because they are so many, and partly because a prefatory parade of their names might raise hopes that this book will not fulfil. Book Selected Letters of Leslie Stephen

Download or read book Selected Letters of Leslie Stephen written by John W. Bicknell and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-09-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since F.W. Maitland's Life and Letters of Leslie Stephen (1907), there has been no volume of the letters written by this extraordinary and eminent Victorian. Alpinist, literary critic, god-killer, editor of The Cornhill Magazine and The Dictionary of National Biography, biographer, historian of ideas, and father of Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf, Stephen corresponded with a host of men and women, including such notables as his American friends - James Russell Lowell, Justice Holmes and art historian Charles E. Norton; such contemporaries among the intelligentsia as John Morley, Henry Sidgwick, George Eliot, Robert Louis Stevenson, F.W. Maitland, and Thomas Hardy; and the members of his family - Minny, his first wife; his sister-in-law, Anny Ritchie; his son Thoby; and his best beloved second wife, Julia. In his letters, always readable, we find his enthusiasms, his ironic humour, his self-doubt and self-pity, his anguish over his retarded child Laura, his candour, his lively portraits of people and places, his delight in the young - Nessa, Ginia and Thoby, and his direct and easy style as he responds to his reader's interests and needs. This second volume follws the demanding years Stephen spent as Editor of The Dictionary of National Biography, his happy life with Julia until her death in 1895 and his continuing devotion to literature, a source of much solace in his last years.

Book Leslie Stephen s Life in Letters

Download or read book Leslie Stephen s Life in Letters written by Gillian Fenwick and published by Aldershot, Hants, England : Scolar Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the forty years after he left Cambridge in 1864, Leslie Stephen (1832-1904) published thirty volumes of his own writings and contributed to another twenty books. He wrote literally hundreds of articles for British and American magazines and worked as editor of The Cornhill Magazine and of Alpine Journal as well as the Dictionary of National Biography. By any standards his literary career was successful, epitomising the life of the Victorian man of letters. But he was never completely satisfied with his endeavours. He remained self-effacing, adopting the pose of an amateur in a field in which, in fact, he was a superb professional; asking, 'Will not the twentieth century laugh at the nineteenth?' Contrary to his expectations, Leslie Stephen has not been relegated to the learned footnotes, as contemporary Victorian scholarship and Bloomsbury studies prove. This bibliography is an account of Leslie Stephen's entire writing and publishing career, based on the author's detailed research into his books and articles as well as unpublished, and in many cases, uncatalogued, autograph material in British and American libraries, museums and publishers' archives. Emphasis is on the composition, publication history and evolution of the works, including new editions and reissues of his books during Leslie Stephen's lifetime.

Book Death Ritual and Bereavement

Download or read book Death Ritual and Bereavement written by Ralph Houlbrooke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989, Death, Ritual and Bereavement examines the social history of death and dying from 1500 to the 1930s. This edited collection focuses on the death-bed, funerals, burials, mourning customs, and the expression of grief. The essays throw fresh light on developments which lie at the roots of present-day tendencies to minimize or conceal the most unpleasant aspects of death, among them the growing participation of doctors in the management of death-beds in the eighteenth century and the creation of extra-mural cemeteries, followed by the introduction of cremation in the nineteenth century. The volume also underlines the importance of religious belief, in helping the bereaved in past times. The book will appeal to students and academics of family and social history as well as history of medicine, religion and anthropology.

Book Virginia Woolf

Download or read book Virginia Woolf written by Katherine Dalsimer and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: divdivBy the time she was twenty-four, Virginia Woolf had suffered a series of devastating losses that later she would describe as “sledge-hammer blows,” beginning with the death of her mother when she was thirteen years old and followed by those of her half-sister, father, and brother. Yet vulnerable as she was (“skinless” was her word) she began, through these years, to practice her art—and to discover how it could serve her. Ultimately, she came to feel that it was her “shock-receiving capacity” that had made her a writer. Astonishingly gifted from the start, Woolf learned to be attentive to the movements of her own mind. Through self-reflection she found a language for the ebb and flow of thought, fantasy, feeling, and memory, for the shifts of light and dark. And in her writing she preserved, recreated, and altered the dead, altering in the process her internal relationship with their “invisible presences.” “I will go backwards & forwards” she remarked in her diary, a comment on both her imaginative and writerly practice. Following Woolf’s lead, psychologist Katherine Dalsimer moves backward and forward between the work of Woolf’s maturity and her early journals, letters, and unpublished juvenilia to illuminate the process by which Woolf became a writer. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory as well as on Woolf’s life and work, and trusting Woolf’s own self-observations, Dalsimer offers a compelling account of a young artist’s voyage out—a voyage that Virginia Woolf began by looking inward and completed by looking back. /DIV/DIV
