Download or read book O written by Zeina Hashem Beck and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED A BEST BOOK OF 2022 BY LIT HUB AND THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY “O is so full of music and passion for life . . . Zeina Hashem Beck’s poems unfold the abundance of our world.” —Ilya Kaminsky, author of Deaf Republic From a “brilliant, absolutely essential voice” whose “poems feel like whole worlds” (Naomi Shihab Nye), a poetry collection considering the body physical, the body politic, and the body sacred Zeina Hashem Beck writes at the intersection of the divine and the profane, where she crafts elegant, candid poems that simultaneously exude a boundless curiosity and a deep knowingness. Formally electrifying—from lyrics and triptychs to ghazals and Zeina's own duets, in which English and Arabic echo and contradict each other—O explores the limits of language, notions of home and exile, and stirring visions of motherhood, memory, and faith.
Download or read book Love Hazard written by Rachel Van Dyken and published by 1001 Dark Nights Press. This book was released on 2024-08-12 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spin off... From THE BET The amount of joy I have for this, like you don't even know. I'm actually freaking out, so here you go! <3, RVD When hate leads to love next door… My dad is protective. Scratch that. He’s like the person who would grab a chair, place it on the lawn, and watch me walk across the street just to deliver an apple. So, when a bet between the rude, good-looking guy across the way becomes a full-on battle, it turns into absolute chaos. He says my degree is useless and that I’m a rich, spoiled princess. I say he’s an idiot who only knows how to fix motorcycles and is incapable of having a clean-shaven face. He gives me a tiara. Thanks. I buy him a razor. Perfect. He follows that up with a book… Like. I. Can’t. Read. I then give him soap—explanation easy there. The following day, I receive a pink princess blanket that I may or may not have burned and tossed on his front doorstep, not realizing his dad is a cop. Now, both dads want the war to stop between us, forcing us to go on a camping trip to bury the hatchet—which I’m convinced he actually brought. He’s a hazard to my health. But it’s only a weekend. I honestly don’t know if we’ll make it out alive, but the dads are tired of it all. Regardless, I’ll come out, and prove I'm not the princess he thinks I am. Maybe he’ll end up lost in the woods—one can only hope. One thing’s for sure. I will never, ever fall for him. Ever. A bet with the boy next door? Challenge accepted. I’ll be waiting for my trophy at the finish line. **Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.** Reviews for Love Hazard: “I loved, loved every minute of this book. It was chaotic and sweet. Download or read book On Consumer Culture Identity The Church and the Rhetorics of Delight written by Mark Clavier and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reading Augustine series presents short, engaging books offering personal readings of St. Augustine of Hippo's contributions to western philosophical, literary, and religious life. Mark Clavier's On Consumer Culture, Identity, The Church and the Rhetorics of Delight draws on Augustine of Hippo to provide a theological explanation for the success of marketing and consumer culture. Augustine's thought, rooted in rhetorical theory, presents a brilliant understanding of the experiences of damnation and salvation that takes seriously the often hidden psychology of human motivation. Clavier examines how Augustine's keen insight into the power of delight over personal notions of freedom and self-identity can be used to shed light on how the constant lure of promised happiness shapes our identities as consumers. From Augustine's perspective, it is only by addressing the sources of delight within consumerism and by rediscovering the wellsprings of God's delight that we can effectively challenge consumer culture. To an age awash with commercial rhetoric, the fifth-century Bishop of Hippo offers a theological rhetoric that is surprisingly contemporary and insightful.

Download or read book Revolt Against Theocracy written by Farhad Khosrokhavar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-08-26 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in-depth account of the uprising in Iran that began on 16 September 2022, when a young woman, Mahsa Amini, was killed by the morality police. In the months that followed, protests and demonstrations erupted across Iran, representing the most serious challenge to the Iranian regime in decades. Women have played a key role in these protests, refusing to wear a hijab and cutting their hair in public to chants of ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’. In Farhad Khosrokhavar’s account, these protests represent the first truly feminist movement in Iran, and one of the first in the Muslim world, where women have been in the vanguard. There have been many movements in the Muslim world in which women have taken part, but rarely have women – and especially young women – been the driving force. The Mahsa Movement also championed non-Islamic, secularized values, based on the joy of living, the assertion of bodily freedom and the quest for gender equality and democracy. Khosrokhavar gives a full account of the context of and background to the events triggered by the killing of Mahsa Amini, analyzes the character of the Mahsa Movement and the regime’s repressive response to it, and draws out its broader significance as one of the most significant feminist movements and political uprisings in the Islamic world.
