Book Life is a Trip

Download or read book Life is a Trip written by Judith Fein and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable collection of essays that is proof positive that travel can transform, that inquisitiveness and an openness to unplanned experience is just as important as a passport. Very few travel writers seek out wildly exotic experiences such as burial practices on an obscure Micronesian island or the work habits of good witches in Guatamala's mountains, and even fewer have the wisdom and wherewithal to uncover profound life lessons along the way. but then, Judith Fein is anything but your average travel writer. A ten-year columnist for Spirituality & Health magazine and a contributor to nearly 100 other publications over her storied writing career, Fein's interest in travel has always been a fascination for what lies beneath the surface.

Book excerpt: In this witty and entertaining collection of travel tales, an acclaimed journalist explores his obsession with trains--and what his rail journeys have taught him about culture and identity. "I've gone around the world in installments. Every trip has been a revelation. I've watched regions, nations, and continents change moods and I've met more people on trains than in forty years of airplane flights. Every train trip has been a spectacle. Trains are stages, cafés, bazaars. The only talk show that will never go off the air..." Beppe Severgnini has spent his life traveling the world, and not just because he's a journalist; he's a passionate, unflagging train buff. Off the Rails recounts some of his favorite trips across Europe, Australia, Asia, and the United States, each journey bringing readers not only to a different place but to a different time, from his honeymoon on the Trans-Siberian Express (in a four-person compartment!), to a winding journey from Russia to Turkey during the last summer of communism, to a recent coast-to-coast trip with his son from Washington, D.C., to Washington State. Off the Rails is the perfect getaway for anyone with a touch of wanderlust, who dreams of escape or just likes to laugh. Filled with memorable characters and perceptive observations, it demonstrates--hilariously--what unites us. With the world in chaos and life in perpetual fast-forward, it's always the right time to hop on board with Beppe Severgnini and meet your charming, hapless, quarrelsome, romantic, shifty, quirky, endearing neighbors.

Book Capital Cities A Journey Around The World Through 118 Capital Cities

Download or read book Capital Cities A Journey Around The World Through 118 Capital Cities written by Paul Drecksler and published by Travel Is Life. This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step into the beauty, culture, history, and lifestyle of capital cities around the world through photography and short story. In this ode to capital cities, the Travel is Life Creators showcase 118 cities from every continent, including Antarctica! The best way to begin traveling a country is from its capital city. You can get anywhere from the capital. Capital cities are the melting pots of countries that bring their culture and people together from all walks of life. They are where countries unite and history happens. Capital cities are often overlooked and underappreciated on travel itineraries. They become a placemark on a map to catch a connecting flight or a destination in which to spend a night recovering from jet lag after leaving one time zone and entering another. There are countless travel books about where to go after the capital city... like the beaches, mountains, pueblos, wonders of the world, and everything in between. And don't get me wrong -- I love visiting those places and reading those books too. However, I wanted to create a book that explored the capital cities themselves, which are equally special, but don't always get as much attention. This book is my ode to capital cities, but since I've only been to tens of capital cities myself, I asked for help from my friends. In this book, a group of professional travel bloggers and I, collectively called Travel is Life Creators, have showcased 118 capital cities from every continent in the world (including Antarctica). Our mission was not to create a travel guide, but instead, to capture the culture, history, and lifestyle of capital cities through photography and short story. I hope that reading this book will allow you to step into each capital city through the eyes and lens of each photographer and writer so that you can see, hear, touch, taste, smell, and experience that city, even if just for a brief moment, before traveling to the next page.

Book Our Trip Around the World

Download or read book Our Trip Around the World written by Renate Belczyk and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spirited 1950s travelogue that takes the reader around the world during a time when two independent young women travelling alone was considered almost revolutionary. Renate Belczyk was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1932. When she was three years old her family moved to Berlin, where they settled into a small apartment building on the outskirts of the city. It was in this building that she met another adventurous girl, Sigrid, with whom she would travel around the world as young women after the Second World War. Having spent most of their childhood and teenage years climbing trees, swimming, cycling, hiking, and adventuring around Germany the two young women attended a talk by the German writer Heinrich Böll. During his presentation the renowned author suggested to the crowd that they all travel to different countries and make friends with the locals whenever they could, as this would help prevent another war. Renate and Sigrid took this advice to heart, and from that point their adventures together took flight. Starting in 1955 and travelling for three years to England, France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Canada, Japan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Egypt, Turkey, Macedonia, and Greece, their adventures together culminated with their joint return to Germany in 1958. In 1959 Renate returned to the Canadian Rockies to work in the backcountry, and in 1960 she married mountaineer Felix Belczyk and settled in Castlegar, BC, where they raised three children. Our Trip Around the World is an endearing snapshot of the postwar era when adventure travel - mountaineering, hiking, hitchhiking, and cycling - was enticing those with adventurous spirits to experience the world like never before.
