Book The Sea Shore Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sea Shore Classic Reprint written by W. S. Furneaux and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sea Shore To sea-side naturalists it must be a matter of great surprise that of the inhabitants of our coast towns and villages, and of the pleasure-seekers that swarm on various parts of the coast during the holiday season, so few take a real interest in the natural history of the shore. The tide flows and ebbs and the restless waves incessantly roll on the beach without arousing a thought as to the nature and cause of their movements. The beach itself teems with peculiar forms of life that are scarcely noticed except when they disturb the peace of the resting visitor. The charming vegetation of the tranquil rock-pool receives but a passing glance, and the little world of busy creatures that people it are scarcely observed; while the wonderful forms of life that inhabit the sheltered nooks of the rugged rocks between the tide-marks are almost entirely unknown except to the comparatively few students of Nature. So general is this apparent lack of interest in the things of the shore that he who delights in the study of littoral life and scenes but seldom meets with a kindred spirit while following his pursuits, even though the crowded beach of a popular resort be situated in the immediate neighbourhood of his hunting ground. Download or read book The Story of Life in the Seas Classic Reprint written by Sydney John Hickson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Life in the Seas The story of the life of animals and plants in the sea is one with so many aspects, that it is difficult to choose the points that may be included, and those that may be omitted from a book in tended for the general reader. To some the story of the food Fishes and the Whales is of the greatest interest; to others the beautiful shapes and colours of shells have a predominating fasci nation; and to those who have devoted them selves to geological study, the history of the animals that contribute to the formation of the reefs and the ocean-bed present features of spe cial attraction. To many, then, the perusal of my book must lead to disappointment, as no one of these aspects has been treated adequately; but if some new interest is awakened, some new train of thought quickened into life, one of the objects I had in view will have been gained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World of the Sea "Le Monde de la Mer" was published in Paris some years ago; it was the work of M. Moquin Tandon, but for sundry reasons he substituted the pseudonyme of Frédol for his own name. The most prominent of those reasons no longer now remaining, we are not betraying a trust in divulging the author's real name. The work is not intended to be exhaustive, but it is an ample review of the ocean world. At every point of interest in the submarine landscape the pen of the author has lingered. The reader is not led into this wondrous world by the hand of rigid science, to find all strictly classified and labelled with a technical nomenclature; but the guide, as he passes through the mazes of the watery depths, points out everything which can arrest the attention: describing the habits and instincts of the denizens of the sea, entering into their home-life, examining the process of their development, the work assigned to them in the great scheme of life, and the connection they have with man. Neither does life itself absorb all his attention, for he fails not to enter into the physical history of an element so totally different to that in which we exist. The waves, the currents, the tides, find a place in his description; and, passing northward, he leads us to the land of silence, where the sea, at the touch of the Wintry King, has congealed into fields of ice and stately bergs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marine world is an immense, three-dimensional living space inhabited by marine life that varies from the mundane to the bizarre. Its salty influence extends up river estuaries, over seashores and inland with brine-laden spray. The Marine World covers all those organisms that live in, on and around the ocean bringing together in a single text everything from the miniscule to the immense. With chapters on marine bacteria, plants, fungi and protozoa, as well as all the major groups of marine invertebrates, plus fish, reptiles, mammals and birds, it provides an insight into the existence and way of life of almost everything living in the ocean. Each animal or plant is found in its own particular place and The Marine World encompasses principal ocean habitats and ecosystems including open water, seashores, deep sea, coral reefs and many more. Written with clear, accessible text and illustrated throughout with photographs and detailed drawings, The Marine World provides in depth information to provide answers for each group on 'what?' 'where?' and 'how?', via sections on identification, distribution, structure, biology, classification and conservation.
