Book excerpt: Painting "without color" has long held a fascination for artists. In this striking and original book, the authors explore how and why artists from the 15th century to the present have chosen to paint in black, white, and shades of gray. Sometimes artists used trompe l'oeil monochromatic effects to represent other media, such as sculpture, prints, or photography; others have consciously limited their palette as a means of re-focusing the viewer's attention, while contemporary artists such as Gerhard Richter and Bridget Riley have often found inspiration in pushing black and white to its limits, and in new directions. The authors trace the history of this art form, from the symbolism of sacred images in medieval church ritual - epitomized in Netherlandish painting from the 15th century onwards by Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck - to the modern era and the work of artists such as Josef Albers and Ellsworth Kelly.

Book The Monochrome Society

Download or read book The Monochrome Society written by Amitai Etzioni and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amitai Etzioni is one of the most influential social and political thinkers of our day, a man synonymous with the ideas of communitarianism. In this book, Etzioni challenges those who argue that diversity or multiculturalism is about to become the governing American creed. On the surface, America may seem like a fractured mosaic, but the country is in reality far more socially monochromatic and united than most observers have claimed. In the first chapter, Etzioni presents a great deal of evidence that Americans, whites and African Americans, Hispanics and Asian Americans, new immigrants and decedents of the Pilgrims, continue to share the same core of basic American values and aspirations. He goes on to show that we need not merely a civil but also a good society, one that nurtures virtues. He assesses key social institutions that can serve such a society ranging from revived holidays to greater reliance on public shaming. The most effective sources of bonding and of shared ideas about virtue, he insists throughout, come from the community, not from the state. Etzioni also challenges moral relativists who argue that we have no right to "impose" our moral values on other societies. He responds to those who fear that a cohesive community must also be one that is oppressive, authoritarian, and exclusive. And he explores and assesses possible new sources and definitions of community, including computer-mediated communities and stakeholding in corporations. By turns provocative and reassuring, the chapters here cut to the heart of several of our most pressing social and political issues. The book is further evidence of Etzioni's enduring place in contemporary thought.

Book The Soul of the Camera

Download or read book The Soul of the Camera written by David duChemin and published by Rocky Nook, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As both an art form and a universal language, the photograph has an extraordinary ability to connect and communicate with others. But with over one trillion photos taken each year, why do so few of them truly connect? Why do so few of them grab our emotions or our imaginations? It is not because the images lack focus or proper exposure; with advances in technology, the camera does that so well these days. Photographer David duChemin believes the majority of our images fall short because they lack soul. And without soul, the images have no ability to resonate with others. They simply cannot connect with the viewer, or even—if we’re being truthful—with ourselves.

In The Soul of the Camera: The Photographer’s Place in Picture-Making, David explores what it means to make better photographs. Illustrated with a collection of beautiful black-and-white images, the book’s essays address topics such as craft, mastery, vision, audience, discipline, story, and authenticity. The Soul of the Camera is a personal and deeply pragmatic book that quietly yet forcefully challenges the idea that our cameras, lenses, and settings are anything more than dumb and mute tools. It is the photographer, not the camera, that can and must learn to make better photographs—photographs that convey our vision, connect with others, and, at their core, contain our humanity. The Soul of the Camera helps us do that.

Book Life in Monochrome

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Robert Kuta
  • Publisher : Re-invention UK
  • Release : 2019-05-22
  • ISBN : 0954989937
  • Pages : 74 pages

Download or read book Life in Monochrome written by Stephen Robert Kuta and published by Re-invention UK. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this new collection of poems, Life in Monochrome, Stephen Robert Kuta secures his place as Instagram’s master wordsmith. With his unrivalled lyricism and musicality, Kuta harnesses the short form poem in a way few other writers have, transforming and elevating the everyday into something truly beautiful. Life in Monochrome delves deep into every emotion, proving the universality of human feeling and connecting with readers in an incredibly meaningful way. With poems which share heartbreak, rage, joy and love, Kuta lays himself bare and shares the depths of his feeling with his audience, encouraging them to explore their own emotions on a similarly profound level. With Instagram a very visual and seemingly transient medium, the beauty of these short poems lies in their ability to condense complex ideas and thoughts into only a handful of words. In just a few sparse lines, Kuta vividly captures the human experience and distils it into stunning poetry which appeals to both the eye and ear. This truly is verbal craftsmanship on a level which is extremely rare, with poems reflecting a myriad of feelings which will appeal to readers of all ages and backgrounds. Some are achingly poignant, others express the depth and complexity of love, but all are graced with Kuta’s unique way with words. In an era when we’re warned of shorter attention spans, these neat and concise lyrics sing from both the page and screen and cannot help but capture their readers’ hearts and imaginations.

Book Gaming and the Heroic Life

Download or read book Gaming and the Heroic Life written by Bobby Angel and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video games fuel a fundamental human drive for adventure—like the epic quest to slay zombies, a solo voyage to rescue the princess, or setting off with a clan to defeat the final boss. The desire to be a hero in your journey is something Bobby Angel can relate to. A lifelong gamer, he was the cohost of the God and Gaming series on YouTube and often appears as a guest on Bearded Blevins’s Around the Halo on Twitch. In Gaming and the Heroic Life, Bobby explains that you don’t have to just play the role of hero in a game—you can actually pursue a heroic life by the way you engage the virtual world. Gaming and the Heroic Life is a map to becoming not only a better gamer but also a better person—one who has a purpose and knows where they fit into the world. The book contains three levels: Level One explores why people love games and what games have to do with God. Level Two examines how the Easter eggs of truth, beauty, and goodness in games impact players in much the same way that they impact your relationship with God. Level Three demonstrates how gaming can propel players AFK (away from keyboard) to find purpose and meaning in service to others. Bobby shows where video games intersect with a life of faith in God—how games echo with our call to holiness and how we can respond to that call in both the virtual and real worlds.

  • Author : Kalpana Swaminathan
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2012-05-25
  • ISBN : 9352141660

Download or read book The Monochrome Madonna written by Kalpana Swaminathan and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitara said, with awful distinctness, ‘I think I’m going to die’. And that’s how I got stuck with the annual corpse. Half an hour later I stood in an empty flat, along with a stranger who was very recently, and very violently, dead. Rushing to Sitara’s aid, Lalli’s niece Sita is distracted by Raphael’s Sistine Madonna. Why is it monochrome? And what does it have to do with the body on the living-room floor? Such questions are hardly relevant to the police in their hunt for the murderer. But Lalli is a detective who revels in curiosities, and she thinks otherwise. A brisk thriller of deceit and intrigue, The Monochrome Madonna has Lalli at her most astute as she interprets the nuances of a murder without motive.
