Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Samuel Holden Parsons: Major General in the Continental Army and Chief Judge of the Northwestern Territory 1737 1789 A considerable part of the correspondence of General Parsons during and before the Revolutionary War and while in the Northwestern Territory, together with valuable official papers, was lost by the burning of the building in Middletown in which they were stored. A grandson and namesake of the General, noted as an antiquarian, genealogist and historian, procured duplicates of the lost papers, so far as he was able, intending to publish a biography of the General; but ill-health unfortunately forced him to abandon the undertaking for which he was unusually well equipped. The papers preserved by him, and the remnants of the General's letters - many of them having fallen into the hands of collectors - were inherited by a great-grandson of the General, Samuel H. Parsons of New York, who still has them in his possession. Among them are the General's Letter Book and the Order Book of his Adjutant, David Humphreys. Having access to this collection through the courtesy of Mr. Parsons, and to the Washington Papers by favor of the librarian of the State Department, and having for another purpose already collected much valuable material relating to the General's life and public services, the writer was led to take up the work laid down by the General's grandson. This volume is the outcome of the undertaking. The letters and documents of which this work is largely made up are most of them given in full, and, having been arranged chronologically, furnish, with the intermediate text, a complete and continuous story of the General's life. Congress then took it upon itself to choose numerous subordinate generals to lead the army’s various departments, divisions, and brigades. How this worked out in the end is well known. Book excerpt: William Tryon's role in the affairs of British America during the last years of the empire, and his inability to stem the collapse of that empire, makes for a fascinating story. Royal governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771 and then of New York from 1771 to 1780, Tryon became a general in the British army attempting to quell the American rebellion. This biography covers his life in service to the Crown through the end of the American Revolution. Paul Nelson argues that Tryon was a talented colonial administrator and a successful, even popular, governor largely because he understood American thinking on such basic constitutional issues as taxation, finance, and trade policy. British home authorities failed to follow Tryon's sage counsel regarding the governance of the colonies, advice that might have forestalled the Revolution. In particular, Tryon, like Edmund Burke and others in Parliament, could not convince British ministers that Americans would never accept internal taxes imposed upon them by London. Once the war broke out and Tryon's role changed from governing to leading Loyalist American troops, he was an advocate of harsh, retributive warfare against his former charges. Nelson follows Tryon's military career, especially his debates with colleagues such as Sir Henry Clinton on the wisdom of hard-line versus conciliatory approach to the fighting. And after the war, Nelson shows, Tryon's connections with those unfortunate Americans who came out on the losing side of the great imperial struggle retained an important place in his life.
